  • SS Mallikarjuna Rao was appointed as the Managing Director(MD)and Chief Executive of the Punjab National Bank(PNB).
  • He is currently serving as chief executive of the Allahabad Bank.
  • He will replace Sunil Mehta of PNB.

Axis Bank launches short-term online fixed deposits “Express FD”

  • Axis Bank, India’s third-largest private sector bank has launched the ‘Express FD’, a digital fixed deposit (FD) product that allows a customer to open an FD account in 3 minutes through the digital mode without opening a savings account with the bank.
  • ‘Express FD’ offers attractive interest rates, zero issuance fees and no penalty on pre-mature withdrawal of up to 25% of the amount, the bank said.
  • A customer can open an Express FD account by investing a minimum Rs 5,000 up to Rs 90,000, for a tenure of 6 to 12 months.

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani Inaugurates India’s Largest ‘Charkha’ made of Waste Plastic in Noida.
  • This ‘charkha’ (spinning wheel) made of used plastic waste was inaugurated the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.
  • The ‘charkha’, which symbolises Gandhi’s dream of Swadeshi (self-sufficing and self-reliance), measures 14ft, 20ft and 8ft and is made of 1,250 kg of used plastic.

Amit Shah flags off Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express from the New Delhi Railway Station.
  • The first commercial run of the train will start from 5th October. Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express is a big gift for Jammu and Kashmir’s development and for promoting religious tourism.
  • This is the second Vande Bharat Express.
  • The first one runs in between Delhi and Varanasi.

DGTR launched an online system named ARTIS

  • The commerce ministry’s arm Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has launched ARTIS, an online system.
  • Applications for Remedies in Trade for Indian Industry and other Stakeholders (ARTIS) will be used for the filing of anti-dumping applications by the domestic industry.
  • It aims to facilitate a speedy resolution to the injury faced by the Indian domestic industry and to increase the accessibility of directorate to all the stakeholders.
  • ARTIS is developed for filing applications, responses and other related submissions with respect to various trade remedial.

Centre launched mega drive against single use plastic

  • On Mahatma’s 150th birth anniversary, the government launched massive campaigns against single-use, or disposable, plastic products.
  • It was launched by Union home minister Amit Shah on 2 October.
  • Government is to impose the single-use plastic ban in phases in the country.
  • It is also exploring alternatives ways before the imposition of the ban.

Digital Exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi titled Digital Gandhi Gyan-Vigyan inaugurated

  • Department of Science & Technology, Prof. Ashutosh Sharma inaugurated an exhibition titled Digital Gandhi Gyan Vigyan Exhibition.
  • The main aim is to bring a scientific context to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
  • The exhibition is organised in collaboration with a technology start-up under incubation by IIT, namely, M/s Vizara Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Delhi.
  • This is an immersive Virtual Reality experience based on the life of Gandhiji, with special focus of his life at the Sabarmati Ashram.

Ministry of Power achieved 1 crore LED street light mark

  • Ministry of Power said that India achieved 1 crore LED street light mark so far.
  • Power Minister R K Singh switched on the one croreth LED street light by a remote switch.
  • The Ministry plans to achieve the installation of 1.34 crore LED street lights by March 2020.
  • These lights are installed under the Street Light National Programme (SLNP).
  • The LED lights are being implemented by state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL).

STATE CURRENT AFFAIRS

Rajasthan becomes the third state to ban certain categories of pan masala

  • Rajasthan became the third state in India after Maharashtra and Bihar to ban certain categories of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate, nicotine, tobacco, mineral oil and flavoured ‘supari’.
  • All such products will now be banned in the State under the Food Safety Act.

Meghalaya govt. signed agreement with Dalmia Cement

  • The Meghalaya government inked an environment-friendly deal with a cement company, Dalmia Cement, to help make the state plastic-free by 2022.
  • Dalmia along with Topcem Cement, one of Northeast’s leading cement brands, announced that they have decided to buy plastic waste to be used as fuel, instead of coal.
  • The State govt. aims to achieve it’s goal to make the plastic-free state by 2022.
  • The government plans various methods to recycle plastic and recover waste or scrap plastic.
  • It is also taking measures to reprocess it into operational or useful products without causing pollution.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina arrives in New Delhi on four-day visit

  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in New Delhi this morning on a four day visit to India.
  • She will be attending the India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum in Delhi today.
  • This is the first visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after assuming office for the third consecutive term and in the second term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • During the visit Sheikh Hasina will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and call on President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The two Prime Ministers will jointly inaugurate 3 bilateral projects via video link and exchange MOUs.

Jaipur station topped the 2019 Station Cleanliness Survey

  • Piyush Goyal-led Railway Ministry has released the Station Cleanliness Survey 2019 that ranks the cleanest railway stations in India.
  • Jaipur station of Rajasthan has topped the list of cleanest railway stations in India.
  • The survey was carried out and the list was prepared by the Quality Council of India (QCI).
  • Jaipur ranked first with an overall cleanliness score of 931.75. Jodhpur ranked second with a score of 927.19
  • Durgapura is third with a score of 922.50
  • Suburban group of stations category, Maharashtra’s Andheri station has topped the list.

Former Indian cricketer, Kapil Dev resigned as chairman of CAC

  • The former Indian captain Kapil Dev decision to resign from the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI.
  • This decision comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Ethics Officer D.K. Jain sent a notice to the panel comprising of Kapil, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy with regards to allegations of conflict of interest as claimed by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta.

Air Marshal S K Ghotia appointed as chief of South Western Air Command

  • Air Marshal S K Ghotia has taken over as the new Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Air Command (SWAC) of the Indian Air Force (IAF), at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • He replaced Air Marshal H S Arora, who moved to Air Headquarters as the Vice-Chief of Air Staff.
  • Prior to assuming the present appointment, Air Marshal Ghotia was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Training Command.
  • Air Marshal Ghotia was commissioned in the fighter stream of the IAF in 1981.

Sachin Tendulkar gets most effective Swachhata Ambassador Award

  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the most effective Swachchta Ambassador award to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • He pointed out that the United Nations has set sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030, but India would be achieving them 11 years ahead of the schedule.

Avinash Sable is the first Indian man to qualify for World Championships

  • India’s Avinash Sable qualified for the finals of the men’s 3000-meter steeple chase under dramatic circumstances after bettering his own national record at the World Championships in Doha.
  • Avinash became the first Indian man to qualify for a track event final.
  • He clocked 8 minutes 25.23 seconds bettering his earlier national record of 8:28.94, to finish seventh in the first round.
  • The Athletics Federation of India filed an appeal and it is blocked twice during the race, and he got a favourable decision.

  • A book penned by Indian Ambassador to the Netherlands Venu Rajamony titled ‘India and the Netherlands – Past, Present and Future,’ was released in Amsterdam.
  • The book gives an insight into the cross-cultural legacy between the two countries and was released at a function attended by the king and queen of the Netherlands.
  • The first copy of the book was received by Dutch King Willem-Alexander in presence of all high officials. The book has been published by Bombay Ink.

Hollywood tycoon Eric Pleskow passes away

  • American-Austrian film producer Eric Pleskow the Hollywood tycoon passed away.
  • He was the president of the film company United Artists from 1973 to 1978 and then as co-founder of Orion Pictures where many films under these film companies won Oscar awards.
