World Wildlife Day celebrated on March 3

  • World Wildlife Day is being celebrated on the 3rd of March every year to create awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife.
  • The year is significant on two counts.
  • The bio-diversity super year because of the large number of eco-friendly initiatives being taken the world over.
  • The year 2020 is especially significant to India because it has taken over as the President of CoP13 for Action Against Climate Change.
  • Theme: The theme for this year is Sustaining all life on earth.

Govt launches “Humsafar” mobile app for doorstep diesel delivery

  • Labour of Minister Santosh Gangwar has launched a mobile application named ‘Fuel Humsafar’ for delivery of diesel at doorsteps of Housing societies, hotels and hospitals in the national capital region.
  • The app will be used for the fuel delivery services to housing societies, hotels, hospitals, malls, construction sites, industries, banquets and other bulk buyers of diesel in various NCR cities, including Gurugram, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Hapur, Kundli, Manesar, and Bahadurgarh.
  • Humsafar has 12 bowser tankers in varying capacity from 4 kilolitres to 6 kilolitres and an experienced team of 35 people.

Amit Shah inaugurates NSG Regional Hub campus at Kolkata

  • Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah inaugurated the National Security Guard (NSG) Regional Hub campus at Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • It aims to provide adequate facilities to the brave NSG jawans.
  • He also various welfare projects for NSG, amounting to over Rs. 245 crores, across Kolkata, Manesar, Chennai, and Mumbai.
  • It will ensure to boost the capabilities of the force and raising the morale of the jawans.
  • NSG Regional Hub campus is worth over Rs.162 crores.
  • It has become a model regional hub of the NSG, which will help in honing the professional acumen of the NSG commandos.
  • It will contribute significantly to the capacity building of the first responders, the Police forces of the States.
  • The campus will hold the responsibility of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and the entire North-Eastern region.

Zonal Cultural Centres implemented schemes to promote folk, art, and culture

  • Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs) implemented a number of schemes for promoting the folk, tribal art and culture.

The various activities and schemes include:

Award to Young Talented Artists:

  • The Young Talented Artists Scheme aims to encourage and recognize young talents especially in the field of rare art forms. Youngsters of the age group of 18-30 years are selected and awarded onetime cash award of Rs.10,000.

Guru Shishya Parampara:

  • This scheme aims to transmit the valued traditions to the coming generations. Rare and disappearing art forms of the region are identified under the scheme and eminent experts will carry out the training programmes in ‘Gurukula’ tradition.

Theatre Rejuvenation:

  • The scheme aims to promote theatre activities including stage shows and Production oriented workshops, etc.

Research & Documentation:

  • This scheme plans to preserve, promote and propagate vanishing visual and performing art forms including folk, tribal and classical in the field of dance, music, theatre, literature, fine arts, etc.

Shilpgram:

  • The scheme will promote folk and tribal art and crafts by organizing seminars, workshops, exhibitions, craft fairs, design development and marketing support to the artisans living in rural areas.

Octave:

  • The scheme aims to promote and propagate the rich cultural heritage of the North East (NE) region comprising of eight states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura to the rest of India.

National Cultural Exchange Programme (NCEP):

  • This scheme organizes various festivals of performing arts, exhibitions, yatras, etc. to promote and understand art forms of other regions.

Background:

  • Government of India has set up seven Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs) to preserve and promote various forms of folk art and culture of the tribals throughout the country including West Bengal. ZCCs have headquarters at Patiala, Nagpur, Udaipur, Prayagraj, Kolkata, Dimapur and Thanjavur.
  • The ZCCs organizes various cultural activities and programmes all over the country on a regular basis under the Ministry of Culture.

Thirty Three crores allocated for Kaziranga under Project Tiger scheme

  • Financial assistance to the tune of Rs 1.51 crore sanctioned to Kaziranga National Park during the fiscal years 2018-19 and 2019-2020 under Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
  • Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Babul Supriyo said that Rs and Rs 51,24,670 sanctioned to Kaziranga National Park during the financial years 2018-1 g and 2019 2020 respectively under CAMPA.

Project Tiger scheme

  • Project Tiger scheme financial assistance of Rs 10.30 crore and Rs 22.81 crore were allocated by the government. It is a conservation program launched in April 1973 by the Government of India during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure.

UGC develops Jeevan Kaushal scheme to upgrade life skills for UG students

  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has developed “Jeevan Kaushal” (life skills) curriculum for undergraduate students at Universities and Colleges.
  • The information was passed by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

Jeevan Kaushal:

♦ The Jeevan Kaushal Curriculum covers the courses on communication skills, professional skills, leadership and management skills, and universal human values.

♦The life skills curriculum is available at https://www.ugc.ac.in/e-book/SKILL%20ENG/mobile/index.html.

♦ The life skills curriculum is suggestive. The UGC has requested Vice-Chancellors of all Universities to consider the curriculum for introduction in Universities and affiliated Colleges/institutions at the undergraduate level.

♦ It is aimed to enhance an individual’s ability to be fully self-aware by helping oneself to overcome all fears and insecurities and to grow fully from inside out and outside in.

♦ It will increase knowledge of a person and raise awareness of emotional competency and emotional intelligence at place of study or work.

♦ The skills will develop interpersonal skills and adopt good leadership behaviour for the empowerment of self and others.

♦ It will set appropriate goals, manage stress and time effectively.

Arunachal Pradesh assembly implements e-Vidhan project

  • The Arunachal Pradesh Assembly went paperless with the implementation of e-Vidhan, a project under the Digital India programme.
  • With the implementation of the e-Vidhan project, MLAs can access every information regarding the Assembly, see the list of business and read questions and other documents pertaining to House proceedings through their laptops and tablet computers.
  • The initiative will make all the proceedings in the house paperless.
  • The Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly is the unicameral state legislature of Arunachal Pradesh state in north-eastern India.
  • The Legislative Assembly comprises 60 Members of Legislative Assembly directly elected from single-seat constituencies.

Jammu historic city square renamed as ‘Bharat Mata Chowk’

  • The historic City Chowk in old Jammu was renamed as ‘Bharat Mata Chowk’.
  • A resolution in this regard was passed by the General house of the BJP(Bharatiya Janata Party)-led Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), after which it was done.
  • Every year people are hoisting the tricolour on Republic and Independence days in this chowk.
  • Along with this, the starting point of the circular road near Panjtirthi in the city has also been changed to ‘Atal Ji Chowk’ in the memory of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

  • North Korea launched two short-range missiles into its eastern sea on 2 March.

  • Khelo India University Games ended in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Panjab University Chandigarh took home the champions trophy-winning 46 medals, including 17 gold 19 silver and ten bronze.

Savitribai Phule Pune University

  • Savitribai Phule Pune University claimed the second position and Punjabi University, Patiala declared as the second runners up.
  • Panjab University won a total of 46 medals while Savitribai Phule Pune University won 37 medals, including 17 gold, 11 silver, and nine bronze medals.
  • Punjabi University, Patiala won 33 medals, including 13 gold, six silver, and 14 bronze medals.
  • A total of 113 universities took part in the games.
  • India’s fastest woman Dutee Chand representing Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology clinched the gold medal with a timing of 23.66 seconds in the 200m final.

ICGS Varad was commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard

  • Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Varad was commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) by Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya at L&T Kattupalli shipyard, near Chennai.
  • The vessel was built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

ICGS Varad:

♦ ICGS Varad is fifth in the series of seven offshore patrol vessels contracted by the Ministry of Defence on ICG. It will be based at Paradip in Odisha under the operational control of the Coast Gaurd  North Eastern Region.

♦ The Offshore Patrol Vessel set a record in the Indian shipbuilding industry by becoming the first major defence ship to clear all sea acceptance trials in a single sea sortie.

♦ It will be deployed for the surveillance of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

♦ The vessel will be commanded by Commandant Pintu Bag and has a compliment of 11 officers and 91 men.
