  • Biocon Ltd, a global biopharmaceuticals company, announced that the board of its subsidiary Biocon Biologics India Limited has approved a primary equity investment by Tata Capital Growth Fund.
  • Tata Capital will invest Rs 225 crore for a 0.85 percent minority stake in the biosimilar business, valuing Biocon Biologics at an equity valuation of Rs 26,250 crore and an enterprise valuation of Rs 30,400 crore.

Govt extends deadline for filing income tax returns for FY 2018-19 till Sep 30

  • Union Government has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for 2018-19 fiscal by two months till 30th of September.
  • To further ease compliances for taxpayers, it extended the due date for filing of Income Tax Returns from 31st of July 31 to 30th of September 30.

NATIONAL CURRENT AFFAIRS

Central government to set up single-window clearance for business

  • The central government is working on a single window portal which will reduce the time for businesses to get clearances; further increasing India’s ranking in the ease of doing business.
  • Single Window System is completely digital and provides for unified and integrated business procedures.
  • Portal will be undertaken soon.
  • With six states on board, it will showcase five lakh hectares of land that has already been identified.
  • This will allow online viewing of land available for companies, from their distant offices, precluding the need to frequently visit the offices of land-owning agencies.

Phase 5 of Vande Bharat Mission to start from August 1

  • Phase Five of the Vande Bharat Mission is scheduled to start from the first of August.
  • A total of 792 flights which include 692 international flights and 100 domestic flights have been scheduled under this phase to repatriate Indians from 23 countries.
  • These include GCC countries, US, Cananda, UK, Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Israel, and Kyrgyzstan.

  • The Tamil Nadu government has passed an order to rename three metro rail stations in Chennai after three late Chief Ministers of the State.

According to the order

  • Alandur metro will now be Aringar Anna Alandur Metro,
  • Central will be renamed as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro and CMBT metro as Puratchi Thalaivi Dr J Jayalalithaa CMBT Metro.
  • Earlier, the State had renamed the Central Railway Station after the late three-time CM MGR.

Indian Railways installs automatic lighting systems at three railways stations in Madhya Pradesh

  • The Indian Railways has recently installed automatic lighting systems at three railways stations in Madhya Pradesh. The Railways plan to scale up the project to cover more stations on its network.
  • Railways have installed these automatic lighting systems at Jabalpur, Narsinghpur and Bhopal railways stations of Madhya Pradesh, which fall under the West Central Railway zone.
  • As soon as trains will arrive at the railway station, the lights of the platform will light up automatically at 100 percent capacity and as soon as the train leaves, 50 percent lights on the stations will turn off.
  • Due to this, more than 100 units of electricity are being saved daily at big stations like Bhopal and Jabalpur, which will lead to money-saving.

Kerala announces new Entrepreneurship Development Programme

  • The Kerala government announced a new Entrepreneurship Development Programme to address the issues of shortage of working capital and availability of credit faced by start-ups and small entrepreneurs in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The aim of the programme to identify 2,000 entrepreneurs per year and plans to launch 1,000 new small and medium ventures every year for the next five years, creating 5,000 new ventures.

NASA launches Mars rover

  • The third and final mission to the red planet of the month lifted off on Thursday 30th July at 17:20 IST from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
  • After covering a huge distance of 300 million miles the Mars Perseverance Rover is expected to land on 18th February 2021.
  • The main objective of the Mars Perseverance Rover is to search for signs of ancient life and collect rock and soil samples for a possible return to Earth.

Mars Perseverance Rover:

  • It contains a car-size vehicle bristling with cameras, microphones, drills and lasers.
  • The plutonium-powered, six-wheeled rover will drill down and collect tiny geological specimens that will be brought home in about 2031 in a sort of interplanetary relay race involving multiple spacecraft and countries.

  • The fastest human computation is 28 seconds and was achieved by Shakuntala Devi by successfully multiplying two randomly selected 13-digit numbers, at Imperial College London, UK, on June 18, 1980.
  • The certification was received by Anupama Banerji, daughter of the late mathematician. Banerji said she was barely 10 when her mother made the world record.

Indian-origin author Avni Doshi on 2020 Booker Prize longlist

  • Dubai-based Indian-origin author Avni Doshi is among the 13 authors longlisted for the prestigious 2020 Booker Prize for her debut novel Burnt Sugar, alongside double Booker winner Hilary Mantel for The Mirror and The Light.

World Athletics approve new dates for postponed series due to COVID-19 pandemic

  • World Athletics has approved the new dates on July 30 for the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships Minsk 2020 and World U20 Championship Nairobi 2020.

New Dates:

  • As per the World Athletics, the World U20 Championship Nairobi 2020 will now be held from August 17 to 22, 2021, one week after the Tokyo Olympics Games.
  • According to the competition’s rules, athletes who will be aged between 16-19 years as on December 31, 2021, will eligible to compete in the games.
  • World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships Minsk 2020 has been rescheduled for 23-24 April 2022 in Minsk, Belarus.
  • The World Athletics Half Marathon Championships Yangzhou 2022 has also seen a small date change by moving back one week from March 20, 2022, to March 27, 2022.

  • N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), Kolkata, an autonomous research Institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has developed “AJO-Neo”, a No-touch and Painless device for non-invasive screening of bilirubin level in new-borns.
  • SNBNCBS hosted a Technical Research Centres (TRC) funded by DST and in scientific collaboration with Nil-Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata.

AJO-Neo:

  • AJO-Neo is based on non-contact and non-invasive spectrometry-based techniques for the measurement of neonatal bilirubin level as an alternative of total serum bilirubin (TSB) test without limitations of other available bilirubin meters.
  • The device is reliable in measuring bilirubin levels in preterm, and term neonates irrespective of gestational or postnatal age, sex, risk factors, feeding behaviour, or skin color.
  • The device is found to deliver an almost instantaneous report (about 10 seconds) to a concerned doctor, who is sitting 10,000 km away from the point of care.

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur in collaboration with IIT Jodhpur and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Nagpur has indigenously designed & developed a model for effective tracking and monitoring of COVID-19 positive and suspect patients.
  • This device is in the form of a smart wristband.
  • This wristband can provide mobile free operation, using a geo-fencing technology which will provide real time warning on any breach in quarantine zone.
  • The wristband, in addition, will provide real time, objective and reliable data of vitals of the wearer like the temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and the oxygen saturation, so that the quarantined person will get a health alarm thus helping them seek early medical help.

Guwahati gets Northeast’s first manhole cleaning robot ‘BANDICOOT’

  • Guwahati Development Department Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya inaugurated city’s first manhole cleaning robot to ensure minimal human involvement to clean the sewers.
  • Guwahati is the first city in the entire Northeast region to get a manhole cleaning robot.
  • Named ‘BANDICOOT’, the automatic sewer cleaning device has been procured by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with six Skid Steer Loaders (mini loaders) from JCB.
  • The BANDICOOT robot was developed by a Start-up India company called Genrobotics under the Make in India initiative, funded by CSR of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

  • He was highly reverred in Sikkim, where he spent much of his time for his role in the revival of Lepcha culture, which is an indigenous one in Sikkim.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of folk music.

  • Veteran Bollywood actor Kumkum passed away. Her real name was Zaibunnissa.
  • She has featured in over 100 Hindi films like Mother India, Kohinoor, Ek Sapera Ek Lootera, Naya Daur, Ujala, Raja Aur Runk, Lalkar, Aankhen, Geet, among others.
  • Kumkum also starred in the first Bhojpuri film “Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo” in 1963.
  • Some of the popular songs featuring Kumkum include “Kabhi aar, Kabhi paar” and “Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi’.
