Amazon offers 125,000 full-time jobs to temporary employees to deal with COVID-19 rush
- Amazon is offering full-time jobs to 125,000 of 175,000 temporary workers it hired since March to deal with the COVID-19 rush, if employees would like to stay at Amazon long term.
- According to the company, the rest of 50,000 workers may choose to return to their previous job or stay at Amazon in seasonal or part-time roles.
- Amazon pays at least USD 15 an hour to its 600,000-strong workforce.
- In March, the ecommerce giant announced the hiring of 175,000 roles across its operations network to help provide for the communities and keep as many people as possible working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

India’s GDP growth dips to 3.1 per cent in January-March 2020; 4.2 per cent for fiscal year 2019-20
- A massive contraction in manufacturing and construction activities pulled India’s GDP growth rate down to 3.1 per cent in the last quarter of 2019-20 from Q3’s 4.1 per cent and 5.7 per cent rise reported for the like period of the previous fiscal.
- Consequently, India’s FY20 GDP declined to 4.2 per cent from 6.1 per cent in FY19. On a sequential basis, the quarterly growth rate has progressively come down from 5.2 per cent in Q1 of 2019-20 to 4.4 per cent in Q2 and 4.1 per cent in Q3.

Highlights:
- The National Career Service Project will provide employment related services to career counselling, job matching, vocational guidance, job matching, vocational guidance, job search, information on skill development courses, etc.
- Around 1000 employment exchanges are integrated with NCS.
- This includes 200 model career centres as well. Currently, a new link for work from home has also been added.
- The NCS also offers functions to create video profiles of job seekers.
- This platform helps the job seekers to showcase their ability through short videos.

Uttarakhand govt starts “Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana” for returnee migrants
- Uttarakhand chief minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat has inaugurated the “Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana” for returnee migrants.
Aim:
- The project aims at giving self-employment opportunities to youth and a boost to reverse migration, especially entrepreneurs returning to Uttarakhand and encourage skilled and unskilled artisans, handicrafts and unemployed youths to start their own business.
Highlights of the Scheme:
- The scheme will offer credit facility through nationalised banks, scheduled commercial banks and cooperative banks.
- Mukhyamantri Swarozgar Yojana is self-employment opportunities to youth and a boost to reverse migration, especially entrepreneurs returning to Uttarakhand and encourage skilled and unskilled artisans, handicrafts and unemployed youths to start their own business.
- Information about this scheme should be conveyed to every village so that the youth can avail of this scheme.
- This scheme should be widely publicised through public representatives and district level officers so that the maximum number of villagers can take advantage of it.
- Under this scheme, the district magistrate should coordinate with the bankers so that the beneficiaries do not have any problem in taking a loan.
- The migrants who apply under this programme will get quick approval from the authorities concerned and their applications will be forwarded to banks with immediate subsidy which will be 25% in the hill districts and 15% in the plain districts.
- A person needs to be at least 18 years of age to be able to apply under the scheme.
- The applicant or his family member will be benefited only once under the scheme.

Rozgar Setu Scheme launched by Madhya Pradesh for skilled workers
- Madhya Pradesh Government launched Rojgar Setu Yojana to help migrant workers.

Highlights of the Scheme:
- The Rozgar Setu scheme will provide employment to migrant workers that have returned to their homes.
- The scheme is to conduct a complete survey on population of the state.
- Under the ‘Rozgar Setu’ scheme, survey work of skilled migrant labourers has been started in every Gram Panchayat.
- The skills and other related information of migrant labourers are being compiled during the survey.
- On the other hand, information is being sought from industries, factories and other employment providers about their need.
- Rozgar Setu will be a reliable means of providing work to the labourers according to their skills. Also, skilled labourers will get employment easily in industries, construction works and other activities.
- Along with the scheme, the Madhya Pradesh State Government is planning to implement Svamitva Scheme.

- The Svamitva Scheme was launched to map rural lands that are inhabited.

- 20 thousand rupees each will be given for repairing of 5 lakhs damaged houses in first phase and another 5 lakhs in next phase.
- Besides 28 thousands rupees will be given to the beneficiaries from their wages of 100 days work announced 5 thousands rupees each compensations to 1 lakh pan boroj. Benefits of these have been transferred to the bank accounts of affected people in nine cyclone hit districts.

Maharashtra govt hikes salaries of medical officers
- The Maharashtra government today hiked the salaries of medical officers, both contractual and those who have signed bond with the government by fifteen thousand rupees.
- The decision will benefit doctors who are working in tribal areas of the state.
- The Maharashtra government’s decision to hike salaries of medical officers working in tribal belts of the state will act as a morale booster to the doctors who are at the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- As per the decision taken today, the doctors who have signed bond and are working in tribal areas will get 75 thousand rupees as against 60 thousand rupees which they currently draw.
- The specialist doctors will get 85 thousand rupees as against the present 70 thousand rupees.
- Whereas, the MBBS doctors in other areas of the state will get 70 thousand rupees as against 55 thousand which is being disbursed to them, at present.
- The specialist doctors in other regions of the state will however, get 80 thousand rupees as against 65 thousand rupees to their present pay scale.

Centre approves Rs. 445 cr for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Chhattisgarh
- Centre has approved 445 crore rupees for implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Chhattisgarh during 2020-21.
- The aim of the mission is to provide adequate potable drinking water of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis to every rural household of the country by the 2024.
- Jal Shakti Ministry said, a budget of three lakh 60 thousand Crore rupees has been allocated for this scheme.
- Chhattisgarh has planned to have 100 Per cent Functional Tap Water Connection by 2023-24. Out of 45 lakh households in the State, it has planned to provide tap connections to 20 lakh households.

- The IMF Executive Board on Friday approved an emergency financial assistance worth dollar 732 million for Bangladesh to address the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Highlight:
- The assistance has been approved for Bangladesh to meet its urgent Balance of payment and fiscal needs as Corona pandemic has led to sharp decline in its exports and income from remittances.
- The assistance is provided under the Rapid Credit Facility and Rapid Financing Instrument provisions of the IMF.
- The money will help Bangladesh to meet its health, social protection and macro-stabilization measures.
- The assistance will help the government of Bangladesh to cover the financing gap and support its efforts to contain the adverse impact of the Corona outbreak in the country. mobilization of tax revenue, addressing the issue of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) of the banks, infrastructure and governance remain key challenges for Bangladesh to enhance business environment and attract FDI.
- This is the largest amount of loan assistance for Bangladesh to deal with the Covid-19 fallout. Earlier ADB provided 500 million assistance to Bangladesh to deal with the Corona pandemic.

Meeting of BRICS Heads of Tax Authorities held on May 29
- The meeting of the Heads of Tax Authorities of the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa was held yesterday.
- The meeting was hosted by the Federal Tax Service of Russia, which currently holds the BRICS Presidency, to discuss the response of BRICS Tax Authorities to the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore potential areas of cooperation in tax matters.
- The meeting was scheduled to be held in Moscow, but was held through video conference in view of COVID-19.
- Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey represented India at the meeting.
- During the meeting, Dr Pandey shared with other BRICS nations, various measures taken by India to mitigate the effect of the pandemic on the taxpayers.
- He also urged the BRICS nations to share COVID-19 related tax measures taken by their tax administrations to enhance their understanding of the fiscal and economic impact of the pandemic.

Wipro appoints Deepak M Satwalekar as Independent Director
- IT service major Wipro Limited on Friday announced the appointment of financial services professional Deepak M Satwalekar to its Board of Directors for five years effective July 1.

WADA hands 4 year bans to Kiranjeet Kaur for doping
- India’s long-distance runner, Kiranjeet Kaur has been handed a four-year ban by World Athletics’ anti-doping body for testing positive for a banned substance (Enobosarm).
- She will be stripped of the gold medal she won at the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K.
- Her ban period begins from December 15 (2019), the date of in-competition sample collection.
- She was provisionally suspended by World Athletics on February 26.
- The National Dope Testing Laboratory has been suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency and so Kaur’s samples were tested in the WADA-accredited laboratory in Doha.
- “Enobosarm is a Prohibited Substance under the WADA 2019 Prohibited List (S1.2: Other Anabolic Agents).

IASST scientists develop herbal medicine loaded smart bandage for wounds
- Scientists from Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology,Govt. of India have developed a pH-responsive smart bandage that can deliver the medicine applied in the wound at the pH that is suitable for the wound.
- The scientists have developed the delivery system by fabricating a nanotechnology-based cotton patch that uses cheap and sustainable materials like cotton and jute.
- A nanocomposite hydrogel bound compact cotton patch incorporated with jute carbon dots was fabricated to carry out the drug release.
- Jute has been used for the first time as a precursor in synthesizing fluorescent carbon dots, and water was used as the dispersion medium.
- Herbal formulation neem leaf (Azadirachtaindica) extract was taken as the model drug to exemplify the release study.

Rajya Sabha member M.P. Veerendra Kumar passes away
- Rajya Sabha (RS) MP from Kerala and Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) Leader, writer and journalist, M.P. Veerendra Kumar passed away.
- He was born on July 22, 1936, at Kalpetta, Wayanad district, Kerala.
- In 1996, Kumar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kozhikde and became a ‘Union Minister of State for Finance’ and later ‘Union Minister of State for Labour’ in the United Front governments led by HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral.
- He was elected to the Lok Sabha again in 2004.
- He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since April 2016. He was a recipient of the Sahitya Academy award.

Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur passes away
- Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur passed away. He wrote the lyrics of hit songs “Kahin duur jab din dhal jaye” and “Zindagi kaisi hai paheli” that defined the superhit film Anand (1971).
- He got his first break as a lyricist with the film Sakhi Robin (1962), in which he wrote six songs.
- He also wrote songs for films like Chhoti Si Baat (1976), Baton Baton Mein (1979), Manzil (1979), Rajnigandha (1974) and many more.
