RBI Fined Rs 35 lakh penalty on Tamilnad Mercantile Bank

  • The Reserve Bank has imposed a penalty of Rs 35 lakh on Tamilnad Mercantile Bank for violating norms on fraud classification and notification.
  • It stated that the bank has been penalized for non-compliance with certain provisions of directions issued by RBI on fraud classification and reporting by commercial banks and select FIs directions 2016.

Arunachal Pradesh: 7th edition of Tawang Festival begins with fanfare & fervour

  • In Arunachal Pradesh, the 7th edition of the Tawang Festival began on Monday with much fanfare and fervour in Tawang. 
  • United States’ Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster declared the Festival open.
  • Speaking on the occasion, the US Ambassador extended his gratitude to the people of Tawang for the exceptional hospitality offered to him and his entourage. 
  • He said that he was mesmerised by the colourful people, their dresses, custom and traditions which offer other parts of the world to learn and know.

Rajnath Singh to represent India at SCO heads of state meeting

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will represent India at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) heads of state meeting, which is to be held in Uzbekistan on 2 November.
  • Mr. Singh is to embark on a three-day visit to Uzbekistan from 1-3 November. 
  • He will also hold a meeting with Uzbekistan’s defence minister. 
  • Both Ministers will discuss military cooperation.

‘Bangladesh-India Friendship Dialogue’ at Cox’s Bazar from Nov 1

  • The two-day dialogue will cover a wide range of issues like trade and investment, connectivity, technology, energy, regional security, extremism and sustainable development among others. The dialogue aims to draw from learning and experiences in these sectors between India and Bangladesh.

PM Modi to hold bilateral talks with Saudi King & top leaders in Riyadh

  • The agreements will be signed after delegation level talks later in the day in Saudi capital Riyadh. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached Riyadh last night will have a bilateral meeting with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and will hold delegation-level talks with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman. 
  • There will also be calls on the Prime Minister by Saudi Energy, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Labour Ministers.

The 29th BASIC Ministers Meeting was held in Beijing

  • The 29th BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India, and China) Ministers’ Meeting on Climate Change was held in Beijing, China, on 25th-26th October 2019. 
  • The meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. LI Ganjie, Minister of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China. 
  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and I&B Mr. Prakash Javadekar represented India in the Ministers’ meeting.
  • The BASIC countries called for comprehensive implementation of the Paris climate deal
  • The ministers of the meeting called on the developed nations to deliver on their commitment to provide $100 billion climate.

Three Indian-origin CEOs in Harvard Business Review’s top 10 best-performing CEOs

  • Three Indian-origin CEOs have been featured in a list of world’s top 10 best-performing chief executives.
  • ‘The Best-Performing CEOs in the World, 2019’ list compiled by the Harvard Business Review (HBR) features 100 CEOs and has been topped by American technology company NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang.Among the top 10 chief executives on the list, three spots have been occupied by the Indian-origin CEOs.
  • On the 6th spot is Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen, followed by MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga, ranked 7th and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella on the 9th spot.
  • The list also features India-born CEO of DBS Bank Piyush Gupta on the 89th spot. Apple CEO Tim Cook is ranked 62nd.
  • The list also includes Nike CEO Mark Parker ranked 20, JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon (23), Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson (37), Disney CEO Robert Iger (55) and SoftBank head Masayoshi Son (96).
  • The HBR said since 2015, its ranking has been based not only on financial performance but also on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings.

World Bank to fund USD 6 bn annual lending support to India

  • World Bank, the multi-lateral funding agency, has announced that it is to continue providing a $6 billion annual lending target for India to support infrastructure development and alleviate poverty. 
  • The announcement was made by President of World Bank David Malpass during his visit in the backdrop of the recently released World Bank report on Ease of Doing Business 2020.

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde Appointed as 47th Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde was appointed as the 47th Chief Justice of India. Justice Bobde will take oath as the CJI on November 18th, a day after incumbent Ranjan Gogoi demits office. 
  • He will have a tenure of 17 months and would demit office on 23rd April 2021.
  • A judge since 2000, Justice Bobde joined the Bombay High Court as an additional judge. 
  • He was appointed as the chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on October 2012. 
  • In April 2013, he was elevated to the Supreme Court.

Exercise Shakti to be held from 31 October to 13 November

  • Exercise Shakti-2019, a bilateral exercise between the Indian Army and French Army, is to be held at the Foreign Training Node at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan from 31 October to 13 November. 
  • Aim:The Exercise Shakti aimed at counter-terrorism operations in the backdrop of semi-desert terrain under the United Nations mandate.
