• A report by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat stated that the APEC region is expected to post a 2.7% economic decline in 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19.
• It also stated that this decline will be the most significant fall since the near-zero growth rate logged in 2009.

Highlights:

• The report recorded a 3.6% economic growth in the APEC region.
• The unemployment rate in the region has been projected to rise to 5.4% in 2020 from 3.8% in 2019, which means an additional 23.5 million workers being unemployed in 2020.
• An economic rebound is a forecast for the year 2021, with the anticipated growth of 6.3%, higher than the projected global economic growth of 5.8%.
• It states that the rebound depends on the effectiveness of containment mechanisms to avoid a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and measures to stimulate the economy.

Moody’s slashes India growth forecast to 0.2 pc for 2020

• Moody’s Investors Service slashed India growth forecast for calendar year 2020 to 0.2 per cent, from 2.5 per cent projected in March.

CPWD issue guidelines on using AC amid lockdown

• Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has issued guidelines on using the central air-conditioners in public buildings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
• The move comes as per the guidance of Delhi High Court.
• The guidelines were the Indian Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioner Engineers (ISHRAE).

Guidelines:

• As per the guidelines, the air-conditioning systems be disinfected and cleaned and humidity levels maintained at all times.
• The guidelines were issued with an aim to counter the fact use of air conditioners that might lead to increased spread of COVID-19.
• The air filters should be cleaned often.
• The ideal temperature of the room should be maintained between 24 degree Celsius and 30 degree Celsius.
• As per the guidelines, the relative humidity in the building or room should be maintained between 40% and 70% and ventilate with outdoor air.

India will produce indigenous RT-PCR kits by end of May

• India is set to produce indigenous rapid testing and RT-PCR diagnostic kits by the end of May.
• The information was passed by the Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

• Also, at least half a dozen candidate vaccines are being supported of which four are in an advanced stage.

• Several kinds of research for the development of candidate vaccines, therapeutics, and suitable animal models for COVID-19 and the development of indigenous diagnostics and genomic studies on the host and pathogen are being processed.

Agartala Smart City uses Mobile Kiosk for COVID-19 sample testing

• Agartala Smart City used a Mobile COVID-19 sample collection kiosk under the smart city mission.
• Agartala Smart City has designed and submitted it to the city’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
• This initiative is a major step by Agartala in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highlights:

• The initiative was taken by the Municipal Commissioner, Agartala Municipal Corporation, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Agartala Smart City Limited.
• The kiosk ensures protection to the sample collecting doctor and prevents wastage of personal protection equipment (PPE).
• The kiosk is mounted on a three-wheeler vehicle. It enables the kiosk to navigate through narrow lanes and helps the collection of samples from the community itself.
• Under this initiative, the patients do not need to come to the hospital for giving the sample.
• It will also facilitate mass testing of a larger number of people in a shorter time frame.

Gujarat govt launches unique initiative ‘Umbare Aanganwadi’ to help children during lockdown

• Gujarat State Government has launched a unique initiative called ‘Umbare Aanganwadi (means doorstep Aanganwadi) under ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) programme to reach out to children during the lockdown.
• Under this initiative, the ICDS department of the state will mainly offer ready to eat nutritious food packets through AMUL (an Indian dairy cooperative society) to its beneficiaries including 14 lakh children between 3-6 years of age, pregnant and nursing women and adolescent girls through the network of around 53 thousand Aanganwadi.
• In addition to this, ICDS Department has also initiated a TV programme called ‘Umbare Aanganwadi’ which is telecast every alternate day through Vande Gujarat channel as well as on Jio TV &You Tube, where the regular theme-based modules of Aanganwadi are being taught in an interactive the way.

AP launched ‘Covid Pharma’, a mobile application to trace people buying medicines for fever, cold

• The Medical and Health Department of Andhra Pradesh (AP) has launched ‘Covid Pharma’, a mobile application(app) to keep a track of people buying medicines over-the-counter (OTC) for cough, cold and fever from medical stores across the state.
• Aim: To monitor patients who experience any increase in cold & fever, which helps to trace easily the persons with any symptoms of coronavirus and works as an additional precautionary measure for regular sample testing simultaneously
• According to Andhra Pradesh Pharmacy Council data, there are 68,000 registered pharmacists in the State.
• AP now tops the number of sample tests conducted per million population in the country.
• It has recruited 1,174 doctors on a temporary basis for a year to meet the emergency requirements in view of the prevailing coronavirus pandemic, where most of these doctors will be posted in the COVID-19 hotbed districts like Kurnool, Guntur, Krishna and Chittoor.

Prakash Javadekar stresses on climate finance in first virtual Petersberg Climate Dialogue

• Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar represented India in the first virtual Petersberg Climate Dialogue on 28 April.
• The first virtual Climate Dialogue was the eleventh session of Petersberg Climate Dialogue.
• It has been hosted by Germany since 2010.

Highlight:

• The Dialogue aims to provide a forum for informal high-level political discussions.
• The meeting focused both on international climate negotiations and the advancement of climate action.
• Ministers and representatives of about 30 countries participated in the dialogue.
• Minister Javadekar urged to have climate technology as open-source which must be available at an affordable cost.
• He suggested adopting more sustainable consumption patterns in line with the requirement of sustainable lifestyles, as was first initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Paris Conference of the Parties (COP).
• The Union Minister also participated in an Indo-German bilateral meeting with Ms.Svenja Shulze, Minister, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Germany. The bilateral meeting was held through a video conference just before the Petersberg Climate Dialogue.

NTRO reports increased cyber attacks due to work from home

• National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) under National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) assessment states that India’s critical sectors may fall prey to inimical forces that could use relaxations in geofencing restrictions granted to employees working from home to make cyber attacks.

Highlights:

• The report highlighted that several sectors including government undertakings, strategic and public enterprises, banking and financial services, telecom, power, energy, and transport, among others, are susceptible to such attacks.
• The report also stated that several critical sector entities have relaxed their geofencing restrictions so that their employees can log-in and work from home. This has increased the cyber attack from neighbouring countries.
• The cybercriminals also send out legitimate-looking corona related advisories impersonating as officials from the government and health organizations, through malicious e-mail attachments. The cyber criminals act like they seek donations for COVID-19 and try to steal credentials for online fraud.
• The government had advised its employees who are working in critical sectors to be vigilant, and closely monitor privileged users and administrators of critical accounts.
• Ministry of Home Affairs also instructed the firms to track all CRUD (create-read-update-delete) activities in Identity and Access Management (IdAM) and focus on the resilience of backups against ransomware attacks.

• The elite competition, which would have happened for the first time in India, will now be held in the Serbian city of Belgrade.

• A multi-disciplinary expert group COVIDActionCollab (CAC) is developing a protocol to test sewage for COVID-19 traces in selected densely populated urban residential areas of Bengaluru and Kolkata.
• The idea was initiated by the social enterprise platform Catalyst Group.

Highlights:

• The move comes as it is suspected that sewage could be a simple and non-invasive method of community surveillance for coronavirus.
• The COVID-19 patients shed the virus through their stools and urine.
• Researchers say that sensitive laboratory tests can detect traces of coronavirus in sewage even with high levels of dilution.
• The experts are developing a cutting-edge sewage testing method of collecting and testing samples in a way that helps identify localities where traces of the COVID-19 infected patients can be found. This can help authorities to identify these areas.
• By mapping collection areas, authorities can easily narrow down the location of the people infected with the virus live. They can then follow it up with identification through clinical tests, quarantine, and treatment measures.

CSIR-CMERI develops “Hospital Care Assistive Robotic Device”

• A low-cost robotic device named as “Hospital Care Assistive Robotic Device (H-CARD)” has been developed by CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur.
• This robotic device will be used in the collection of samples of people exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, and will also be useful in treating COVID-19 patients.
• Hence, it will be very beneficial for the frontline healthcare workers who are treating COVID-19 patients.
• HCARD works both in autonomous mode as well as manual mode of navigation.
• The Hospital Care Assistive Robotic Device easy to use and affordable for healthcare facilities and can also be employed in maintaining social distancing among people.
• It is also capable of transporting testing equipment, files, food items, medicines as well as personal protective equipment in a comprehensive sterilised environment.
• It also comprises a video call facility, due to which the device can also be used in providing food to the patients.

Cuttack ITI designs robot to serve COVID-19 patients

• ITI Cuttack has designed two robots for monitoring and serving essentials to patients at Covid hospitals.
• The humanoid structures will help reduce risk of infection among medical staff and dependence on PPE kits.
• One of the robots, CO-BOT (Corona Combat Robot), can move carrying load up to 20 kg on a tray.
• The institute’s vocational trainers claimed that the robot can serve food, water and medicine to the patients.
• Like humans, these robots have hand-like structures and are fitted with wheels.
• These robots can work autonomously inside a ward using navigation and mapping tools. The second one, named, NIGA-BOT is a Telepresence robot.
• The robot can be used by the doctors for interacting with the patients from remote locations through live video streaming.
• These robots were developed at the institute’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Laboratory in association with a team of SAK Robotics Lab, a firm registered with Startup Odisha.

IIT Delhi Launches Dashboard ‘PRACRITI’ to predict district, state wise Covid-19 transmission rate

• The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) have developed a web-based dashboard named ‘PRACRITI’ which can predict the district and state wise transmission rate of COVID-19.

Highlights:

• PRACRITI stands for PRediction and Assessment of CoRona Infections and Transmission in India.
• PRACRITI will give details of the R0 (R nought) number of each state and district in India.
• R nought refers to the number of people to whom the disease spreads from a single infected person.
• For instance, if an active COVID-19 patient infects two uninfected persons, the R0 is two.
• The details will be based on the data available from sources such as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and World Health Organisation (WHO).
• This data will enable the authorities and the public to know the exact rate of spread in India locally and take necessary step to control and mitigate Coronavirus transmission in India.

IIT Guwahati collaborates with Hester Biosciences Limited to develop vaccine against COVID-19

• Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is collaborating with Hester Biosciences Limited, a pharmaceutical company based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to work on the vaccine development against COVID-19.
• The agreement between the two parties was signed on 15th April 2020.
• The vaccine will be based on recombinant avian paramyxovirus based vector platform.
• The recombinant avian paramyxovirus-1 will be used to express the immunogenic protein of SARS-CoV-2.
• The recombinant avian paramyxovirus-1 expressing the SARS-CoV-2 protein could be used as a vaccine candidate for further study.

• Padma Shri award winning Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan passed away.
• His health had been on the decline ever since he was diagnosed with the neuroendocrine cancer in 2018.
• In his acting career of over three decades, he acted in over 50 Indian films and several international movies.
• In 2011, Irrfan khan was honoured by the government of India with the Padma Shri award for his significant contribution to arts and cinema.
• Actor Irrfan Khan was born as Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan in Jaipur on January 7, 1966 and studied at National School of Drama. During the initial days of his acting career, he acted in various TV shows such as Chanakya, Bharat Ek Khoj, Banegi Apni Baat, Chandrakanta and many more.
• He made his screen debut in 1988 with “Salaam Bombay” and later on starred in various acclaimed films such as Haasil, Maqbool, Life in a Metro, Paan Singh Tomar, Piku, Madaari and Hindi Medium.

• For his work on the Youth For Christ’s 1999 album ‘Higher’, singer Troy Sneed was nominated for Grammy award.
• Troy Sneed commenced his music career in 1999 with his maiden album ‘Call Jesus’.
• His first album ‘Call Jesus’ was released in collaboration with Malaco Records.
• The Grammy nominated singer has several hit songs under his name, within the gospel realm to his credit, including Work It Out and My Heart Says Yes.
