  • World NGO Day is observed globally on 27 February.
  • The day aims to raise awareness about the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) sector.

RBI lifted its ban on Bandhan Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lifted its ban on Bandhan Bank after considering the efforts made by the Bank to comply with the licensing conditions on 25 February.
  • Now, the Bank can expand its branch network.

Background:

  • In September 2018, RBI had banned Bandhan Bank from expanding its network as the Bank failed to reduce the promoters’ stake to 40% from close to 82% within the stipulated three-year time frame of commencing operations.
  • The Bank has not complied with the licensing condition on dilution yet. But considering the efforts taken by the private lender, the ban was lifted by the RBI.
  • Bandhan bank ensured at least 25% of the total number of banking outlets opened during a financial year are opened in unbanked rural centres.

RBI directed banks to link all new floating rate loan

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed banks to link all the new floating-rate loan to medium enterprises with external benchmark.
  • It will be effective from 1 April 2020. The floating rate loans of the micro and small enterprises are already linked with external benchmarks.
  • Aim:The move by RBI is aimed to further strengthen the monetary policy transmission. The benefits of a reduction in key lending rates can be passed on to medium enterprises.

Highlights:

♦ The external benchmarks will include RBI repo rate, Treasury bill yields, and the market interest rate published by the Financial Benchmark India Private Ltd (FBIL).

♦ The floating rate loans to micro and small enterprises, personal and retail loans have already been linked to external benchmarks.

♦ RBI states that the monetary policy transmission has improved in respect of the sectors where new floating rate loans have been linked to external benchmarks.

ADB raises $118 million from rupee-linked bonds

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has raised Rs 850 crore (USD 118 million) from a new issue of offshore Indian rupee-linked 10-year bonds.
  • This represents ADB’s first new maturity raised in Indian rupees since 2017 and contributes to an established yield curve which stretches from 2021 through 2030 with Rs 7,240 crore (USD 1 billion) of outstanding bonds.
  • ADB’s India rupee bonds have been a “game-changer” for local currency operations.
  • The bonds bear a semi-annual coupon of 6.15 per cent and priced to yield 6.19 per cent.
  • The bonds, which are denominated in Indian rupees, but settled in US dollars, were underwritten by JP Morgan and primarily distributed to investors in the Americas (21 per cent) and Europe (79 per cent).

Xiaomi to use ISRO’s NavIC technology

  • Xiaomi has collaborated with ISRO to bring the space agency’s Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System “NavIC technology” to its smartphones.
  • The announcement was made by Xiaomi Global VP and MD Manu Jain.
  • Xiaomi is the only smartphone brand to have worked with ISRO to bring tech that has been developed in the country to the fore, so far.

NavIC technology in Xiaomi:

♦ Many of the smartphones Xiaomi that are to be launched across multiple price points will support Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) technology. Navic was initially supported only on some Snapdragon chipsets.

♦ The capability has been currently enabled by Qualcomm Technologies on several of its Qualcomm Snapdragon mobile platforms.

♦ This facility will be made available across multiple Xiaomi smartphones in India in 2020.

♦ The move by Xiaomi is a step further towards the Make in India initiative. Xiaomi India has enabled the usage of NavIC technology across several of its devices in 2020.

Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC):

NacIC technology is a regional geo-positioning system designed by ISRO to provide accurate positioning in India and 1,500km around the Indian mainland. The system comprises of 7 satellites, three of which are in a geostationary orbit over the Indian Ocean and four that are in a geosynchronous orbit. The NavIC will be accurate up to 5m, which much more efficient than GPS, which is said to be accurate up to 20 to 30 meters.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal launches MIEWS Portal for Monitoring prices of TOP Crops

  • Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal has launched the– Market Intelligence and Early Warning System (MIEWS) Web Portal.
  • The portal can be accessed at http://miews.nafed-india.com.
  • The MIEWS Dashboard and Portal is a ‘first-of-its-kind’ platform for ‘real-time monitoring’ of prices of tomato, onion and potato (TOP) and for simultaneously generating alerts for intervention under the terms of the Operation Greens(OG) scheme.
  • The portal would disseminate all relevant information related to TOP crops such as Prices and Arrivals, Area, Yield and Production, Imports and Exports, Crop Calendars, Crop Agronomy, etc in an easy to use visual format.

Bhubaneswar to host 24th Meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council

  • The 24th Meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
  • The Meeting of the Eastern Zonal Council will be chaired by the Union Minister for Home Affairs, Shri Amit Shah. Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha will be the Vice-Chairman and host of the meeting.
  • The meeting will feature the participation of the States of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal.
  • The participating states will discuss various issues including power transmission lines, investigation of heinous offences, inter-State water issues, petroleum projects and various other issues.
  • The above issues are expected to be resolved by consensus in the meeting.

Myanmar President Win Myint to visit India

  • Myanmar President Win Myint, along with his wife, the First Lady, Daw Cho Cho, arrived in India on a 26 February.
  • The state visit will be from 26-29 February. President Myint’s visit comes after the invitation extended by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • His visit is expected to deepen bilateral ties between the countries.

Agenda:

♦ The Myanmar President will hold several official meetings will high-level delegations in New Delhi.

♦ His visit is expected to enhance the Neighbourghood First and ActEast policy.

♦ Mr. Mint will visit Agra and Bodh Gaya during the trip.

♦ In 2019, President Myint had visited India to attend Narendra Modi’s second swearing-in ceremony as the Prime Minister.

NTPC, CPCB to set up 25 CAAQMS in States and UTs

  • NTPC Limited has agreed to help the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to set up 25 Continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS) across six States and three Union Territories (UTs) in India.

Agreement:

♦ As per the agreement, NTPCy will provide financial support of Rs.80 crore for the installation of CAAQMS in the States and Union Territories.

♦ The six states are Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, Ranchi in Jharkhand, Patna in Bihar, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, and Allahabad all in Uttar Pradesh, Pimpri-Chinchwad in Maharashtra and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

♦ The 3 UTs where the CAAQMS will be installed are Port Blair in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Silvassa in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman in Daman & Diu.

♦ The data collected from the respective stations will be used for the evaluation of the air quality index for these cities.

  • A Higher Education Leadership Development Programme for Administrator has been launched by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal.
  • This programme is a joint initiative of UGC and British Council under the aegis of UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI).
  • The programme has been launched to enhance the leadership qualities as well as systemic changes with renewed approaches, capacity, tools and skill in the middle and senior level administrative functionaries in Indian Universities.
  • The Higher Education Leadership Development Programme for Administrator also promotes learning for inclusive and internationally linked higher education systems that will enhance the economic and social growth in UK and India.

India to conduct Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020 summit

  • The Government of India (GoI) has announced that it is to organize the mega event “Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020” (RAISE 2020).
  • It will be India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) summit. The event will be held from 11-12 April in New Delhi.

Organizing Team:

RAISE 2020 will be organized by the Government in partnership with Industry & Academia.

RAISE 2020:

♦ The summit aims to exchange ideas and charter a course to use AI for social empowerment, inclusion, and transformation in key areas like Healthcare, Agriculture, Education and Smart Mobility amongst other sectors of great minds.

♦ The meeting will leverage responsible AI practices for enabling the masses.

♦ It aims to utilize the power of AI to responsibly transform the social landscape for a better tomorrow.

♦ RAISE 2020 focuses on facilitating an exchange of ideas to further create mass awareness about the need to ethically develop and practice AI in the digital era.

Rattan Lal Kataria chaired the 17th Meeting of SCILR

  • The 17th edition of the Special Committee for Inter-Linking of Rivers (ILR) was held on 26 February in New Delhi.
  • The meeting was chaired by the Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Social Justice & Empowerment Rattan Lal Kataria.

Highlights:

♦ The Inter-Linking of Rivers, the vision of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was discussed in detail.

♦ The project comprises 16 rivers of Himalayan origin and 14 in the peninsular region.

♦ The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Ken-Betwa Inter-State Link Project involving Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh was completed and reviewed in the meeting. The project is expected to begin soon. Also, DPRs for four projects that are in progress were also reviewed.

♦ The meeting highlighted the need for expediting the various ILR projects, especially those within a State.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Shri U.P. Singh, Director General, National Water Development Agency (NWDA), Shri  Bhopal Singh, senior officers from Central and State Governments and several experts.

Note: The 16th Meeting of the Special Committee for Interlinking of Rivers (SCILR) was held in New Delhi on 21 August 2019. It was chaired by the Union Minister of JalShakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

ICoSDiTAUS 2020 concluded in New Delhi

  • An International Conference on Standardisation of Diagnosis and Terminologies in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha Systems of Medicine (ICoSDiTAUS-2020) was concluded in New Delhi.
  • The conference was held from 25-26 February 2020.

ICoSDiTAUS-2020:

♦ ICoSDiTAUS-2020 is the biggest ever international event dedicated to the standardization of Diagnosis and Terminologies of Traditional Medicine in terms of the broad level of participation covering virtually all the continents.

♦ The conference highlighted the power of TM systems and their significance to address the public health challenges of the 21st century.

♦ The two-day conference adopted the “New Delhi Declaration on Collection and Classification of Traditional Medicine (TM) Diagnostic Data”.

♦ The encounters occur during the Counting and classification of traditional medicine were discussed.

♦ The experts discussed adapting ICD to TM Systems and their implementation.

♦ Relevance and regulation of Traditional Medicine in Health Systems were discussed.

♦ The conference took ahead of the objective of expanding the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) into the realm of Traditional Medicine systems at a conceptual level.

♦ The New Delhi declaration emphasized the commitment of the countries to Traditional Medicine as a significant area of health care.

India ranked 3rd in Hurun Global Rich List 2020

  • Hurun Report has released the Hurun Global Rich List 2020.
  • The Hurun Global Rich List 2020 is a ranking of the US-Dollar billionaires in the world.
  • The 9th edition of the Hurun Global Rich list ranked 2,816 billionaires from 71 countries and from 2,182 companies.

Reports Highlights:

  • Among the countries, the list has been topped by China with 799 Billionaires and USA stood on the 2nd position with 626 Billionaires.
  • Among individuals, Jeff Bezos has topped the list of richest person in the world with the total wealth of US$ 140 Bn.
  • For the 5th time, Beijing (China) remained the capital of world’s billionaire with 110 billionaires living at the place.
  • Total four individuals recorded wealth of over US$ 100 Bn.
  • Mukesh Ambani stood 9th in the global rich list along with Larry Page and Steve Ballmer with a wealth of US$ 67 Bn. Mukesh Ambani was also the only one from Asian region in the top-10 list.

The US became Indias top trading partner

  • The data provided by the Ministry of Commerce stated that in 2018-2019 the US had surpassed China to become India’s top trading partner.
  • It shows greater economic ties between the two countries. The trend is expected to continue in the coming years as India and the US are engaged in further deepening the economic ties.

Report Highlights:

♦ The bilateral trade between India and the US stood at $87.95 billion in the year 2018-2019.

♦ On the other hand, India’s two-way commerce with China aggregated at $87.07 billion in the same year.

♦ During April-December of the year 2019-20, the bilateral trade between the US and India stood at $68 billion and at $64.96 billion with China.

♦ Both countries are expected to finalize a free trade agreement (FTA) so that the bilateral trade would reach different levels.

♦ India is demanding a cut in visa fees, exemption from high duties imposed on certain steel and aluminum products, and greater market access for its products from sectors such as agriculture, automobile, automobile components, and engineering by the US.

♦ On the other hand, the US wants market access for its farm and manufacturing products, medical devices, dairy items, and data localization. It also demanded a cut on import duties on some information and communication technology (ICT) products. The US has also raised concerns over a high trade deficit with India.

Rajesh Kumar becomes new MD & CEO of CIBIL

  • TransUnion Cibil, the largest credit information bureau appointed Rajesh Kumar of HDFC Bank as its new managing director and chief executive.
  • He will succeed Satish Pillai who has moved to become the president of Asia region business of the US-based company.
  • Prior to joining Cibil, Kumar was the group head for retail credit and risk at HDFC Bank.
  • He will be responsible for steering Cibil India’s business into the next phase by ensuring it continues to support the domestic finance industry and consumers.

Maria Sharapova announces retirement from tennis

  • Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement from tennis.
  • The Russian won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2004 aged 17 and completed the career slam, all four major titles, by winning the French Open in 2012.
  • She became world number one in 2005 and won the US Open the next year.
  • She won the 2004 WTA Tour Championships, the 2008 Fed Cup and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
  • In 2016, she served a 15-month ban after testing positive for meldonium. After returning from her ban in 2017, Sharapova struggled to recapture her best form and suffered from a number of injuries. She has dropped to 373 in the world, her lowest ranking since August 2002, and has lost in the first round of her past three Grand Slam tournaments.

Mansukh Mandaviya launched OPV-6 VAJRA in Chennai

  • The 6th Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV-6) ‘VAJRA’ was launched on 27 February at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • The Union Minister of State for Shipping(I/C) and Chemicals & Fertilizers Shri Mansukh Mandaviya chaired the launching ceremony.

VAJRA:

♦ The 6th OPV VAJRA will strengthen the efforts of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) to secure over 7500 km of vast coastline.

♦ The vessel will secure the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) that covers over 20 lakh sq km and more than one lakh merchant ships transiting per year through Indian waters for global trade.

♦ 6th OPV will enhance the Operation, Surveillance, Search & Rescue of ICG.

The vessel was delivered by M/s L&T Shipbuilding under the Make in India policy.

♦ The ship will be used for day and night patrol or surveillance along with anti-terrorism and anti-smuggling operations in EEZ and Coastal Security.

♦ The OPV is equipped with two Navigation Radars with ultra-modern technology, Sophisticated navigational, and latest communication systems.

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education has launched an Exam center locator app “CBSE ECL” as well as an Online Exam Center Management System “OECMS”.
  • The “CBSE ECL” is a mobile application which helps the students to locate their examination center and see the distance between current location and examination center.
  • Hence this app provides information about the examination center for the convenience of the students.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education has also launched an Online Exam Center Management System named as “OECMS” for the Principals of the school.
  • This system will help the Principals of the school to get the real time information like the availability of invigilators, absentee student, Divyanga student, unfair means and various other details in a single click.

Scientist discover first-ever animal that does not need oxygen to breathe

  • Researchers at Tel Aviv University have discovered a unique organism that doesn’t need to breathe.
  • Henneguya salminicola, the tiny parasite, is the first known multicellular animal that can survive without oxygen.
  • It lives in an anaerobic environment.
  • The parasite lives in salmon tissue and evolved so that it doesn’t need oxygen to produce energy.
  • The researchers made the discovery accidentally while sequencing the Henneguya genome.

  1. salminicola is a relative of jellyfish and corals. It lives within the muscle tissue of salmon. It is relatively harmless. It causes diseases like milky flesh or tapioca, which is named for the white fluid-filled cysts it causes in the fish. The parasite lacks mitochondrial genes. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. It captures oxygen to make energy through aerobic respiration.
