Government sets up 24×7 helpline number for queries on Coronavirus

  • Government has launched a 24×7 helpline number to provide support regarding queries on novel coronavirus.
  • Under the directions of Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) call centre, 91-11-23978046, has been made operational.

Government announces sale of 100% stake in debt-laden Air India

  • The government today announced sale of 100 per cent stake in debt-laden Air India.
  • The government has set March 17, as the deadline for submitting an expression of interest.
  • As part of the strategic disinvestment, Air India would also sell 100 percent stake in low-cost airline Air India Express and 50 per cent shareholding in joint venture AISATS.
  • Management control of the airline would also be transferred to the successful bidder.

NAMAMI GANGE MISSION:

♦ The Namami Gange programme is an integrated mission for Ganga rejuvenation.

♦ The Flagship programme was approved by the Union Government in June 2014.

♦ The Centre allotted a budget outlay of Rs.20,000 Crore.

♦ The objective of the Namami Gange Mission is to provide comprehensive and sustainable solutions for major pollution hot spots along the stretch of 97 towns and 4,465 villages on the Ganga stem.

♦ In the Namami Gange programme, a total of 289 projects have so far been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 28,377 crore out of which 87 projects have been completed.

Note: Bijnor is a place where Ganga enters Uttar Pradesh. Ballia is a place where the Ganga river leaves the state to enter Bihar.

Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra govt launches its much-awaited ‘Shiv Bhojan’ scheme

  • Maharashtra government launched its much-awaited ‘Shiv Bhojan’ scheme.
  • AIM: to provide a meal to the poor for just 10 rupees
  • This scheme has been launched on a pilot basis.
  • Under the scheme, thalis or lunch plates would be available to people at designated centres/ canteens during a stipulated time in all the districts.
  • In Mumbai, district Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh inaugurated the “Shiv Bhojan Thali” canteen at the civic-run Nair Hospital.
  • A similar centre was unveiled by Tourism Minister and Mumbai suburban district Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray at the Collector’s office in Bandra.

Chhattisgarh government launches ‘Malaria-free Bastar’ campaign

  • Bastar, the Red zone in south Chhattisgarh, is facing a different battle.
  • The region which has so far not received the deserving attention, to fight the malaria menace, has the Annual Parasite Incidence (API) (malaria) of over 10—rated among the highest in the country.
  • API-10 is equivalent to 10 confirmed cases per thousand population and Bastar is among the very few geographical locations endemic to malaria parasites—Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum.
  • Going by the previous 3 years data, the prevalence of malaria cases recorded were highest during the months of January, July and November.
  • So based on it, a three-phase ‘Malaria Free Bastar’ campaign would be carried out during these months so as to eliminate malarial parasites in its entirety.
  • The state has now meticulously embarked upon a plan to eliminate Malaria from Bastar on mission mode through door-to-door ‘Mass Active Screening and Treatment’ process, which will continue till February 14 under the ‘Malaria-Free Bastar’ campaign.

Sri Lankan govt thanks India for conferring Padma Shri award on two of their citizens

  • Sri Lankan government has thanked India for conferring Padma Shri award on two of their citizens, Dr. Vajira Chitrasena and late Prof. Indra Dassanayake.
  • Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said in a message that it is an honour to have two daughters of Sri Lanka, pioneers in their fields, being awarded with one of the highest civilian awards in India.
  • He congratulated Dr. Chitrasena for being awarded on the occasion of 71st republic day of India.
  • Vajira Chitrasena is considered a living legend of Sri Lankan dance at the age of 87. She has contributed to enriching India-Sri Lanka relations through the promotion of dance and blending the art forms of both countries especially the Kandyan and Odissi dance forms.
  • Late Professor Indra Dassanayake was one of the pioneers to introduce and promote Hindi language in educational institutions of Sri Lanka. Because of her efforts, Hindi is taught in more than 80 institutions and schools of Sri Lanka apart from six major universities at present.

Nepal wants India to take back demonetised notes worth Rs 7 crore from its Central Bank

  • Nepal’s Central Bank is saddled with Rs 7 crore of demonetised Indian currency but India is not making “adjustments” to take back the notes, hoping the scrapped notes would be accepted by its neighbour.
  • The Indian government on November 8, 2016 announced the ban on old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes to curb black money in the system.
  • Around INR 7 crore (demonetised currency) is deposited in our Central Bank. It went through the banking channel, I don’t know why India is not making adjustment (in the matter)
  • Of the Rs 15.41 lakh crore worth Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in circulation on November 8, 99.3 per cent or notes worth Rs 15.31 lakh crore have returned to the banking system.

Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar

The award was instituted to recognise the excellent work done by individuals and institutions in India in the field of disaster management. It is announced every year on January 23, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The winner institution receives a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 51 lakh and the money is to be used disaster management-related activities only. In the case of the winner being an individual, the person gets a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

Researchers discovered a new species of Allosaurus in Utah

  • Paleontologists have unveiled a remarkable new species of the meat-eating dinosaur at the Natural History Museum of Utah.
  • It is suspected that the species must have evolved at least 5 million years earlier than fragilis.
  • The new meat-eating species has been named dinosaur Allosaurus jimmadseni.
  • Allosauroids are a group of small to large-bodied, two-legged carnivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous periods.
