National Broadcasting day: 23rd July

  • Every year July 23 is observed as National Broadcasting day.
  • On this day in 1927, the first ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company.
  • On 8th of June, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service became All India Radio.
  • Currently, All India Radio is one of the largest public broadcasting organisations in the world.

Aditya Birla Payments Bank shuts operations 18 months after launch

  • A venture between Idea Cellular and Aditya Birla Nuvo Aditya , Birla Payments Bank has shut down its operations.
  • The payments bank that was only 18-month old has asked its customers to transfer their balances before July 26.
  • The decision has been taken due to unanticipated developments in the business landscape that have made the economic model unviable.
  • Aditya Birla Nuvo was granted “in-principle” licenses by the Reserve Bank of India in August 2015.

  • United Technologies Corporation (UTC) has selected L&T Technology Services as a strategic partner for Collins Aerospace.

National Current Affairs

India to give Ten thousand scholarships to heirs of liberation war fighters in Bangladesh

  • Government of India will provide 10,000 scholarships for heirs of the liberation war fighters of Bangladesh called ‘Muktijodhas’.
  • This scholarship will be given under the Nutan India-Bangladesh Maitree Muktijodha Sontan Scholarship Scheme.
  • The scheme started in 2017-18 awards scholarship to one thousand students each at the higher secondary and undergraduate levels every year.
  • The Undergraduate students will get a onetime amount of Taka 50,000 and Higher Secondary students Taka 20,000 under the scheme.
  • The last date for submitting application is 22 of the next month.

WEF Centre, Telangana govt set to send medical supplies via drones

  • Telangana Government and the World Economic Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Network announced that they are set to launch an innovative project to deliver emergency medical supplies such as blood and vaccines via drones.
  • It will help facilitate decision-making in healthcare supply chains.

Andhra Pradesh Becomes First State to Reserve 75% Private Jobs for Local Youths

  • Andhra Pradesh became the first state to reserve 75% jobs for local youth.
  • AP assembly passed the Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in Industries/Factories Act, 2019, which reserves 75 per cent jobs in industrial units, factories, joint ventures and projects set up under public-private partnership mode.
  • If a company does not find the necessary skills in locals, then it will need to train them in association with the state government.

  • Britain swimmer Adam Peaty break the world record in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

  • He will take over from Lt. Gen. D. Anbu as he will be retiring on August 31.

Indian Navy Commissions Dornier Squadron INAS 313

  • The Navy commissions its fifth Dornier Aircraft Squadron – Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 313 in Chennai.
  • The Squadron will be operating from Chennai International Airport.
  • The State of Tamil Nadu will have three naval air bases; which is the highest number for any Coastal State.
  • INAS 313, INS Rajali at Arakkonam and INS Parundu at Ramnad are the three naval air bases.
  • The aircraft is used for maritime surveillance, Search and Rescue Operations and to provide targeting data to weapon platforms.

  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano passed away at an age of 72.
  • During his tenure he had overseen a period of tense negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.
