Paytm Payments Bank crosses Rs1,000 crore in savings account deposits, launches DBT scheme

  • According to PPBL, this accelerated rise in the deposits comes on the back of more people embracing digital banking during covid-19.
  • The bank has now implemented the option to avail benefits of Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), which is a scheme by Government of India to transfer the subsidies of various social welfare schemes like LPG gas subsidy, MNREGA payments, Old Age Pension, Scholarships directly into the beneficiary’s bank account.

Pune develops Saiyam app to track home-quarantines citizens

  • Pune Municipal Corporation under Smart Cities Mission (SCM) has launched a mobile application named “Saiyam”.
  • The app aims to effectively track home-quarantines citizens and ensure they are actually staying in the home.

Saiyam app:

  • The app has been developed to monitor home quarantined citizens.
  • The city administration has appointed dedicated teams for five zones to conduct a follow-up with people under home quarantine on a daily basis.
  • The teams will check on people who have recently returned from international trips and those discharged after treatment for COVID-19.
  • The teams will seek updates from quarantined people on their health status and details of persons in contact with them.
  • For persons sporting the home quarantine stamp, the teams will check if separate food, bed, utensils, clothes, and washrooms are provided to them.
  • They will check if those under home quarantine have downloaded the Saiyam Mobile Application. The Mobile Application has GPS tracking so that whenever quarantined citizens leave their homes, City Administration gets alerted and the local ward or the local police station gets informed, who then visit the family.
  • Movements of the citizens can be monitored centrally in real-time from the monitoring cell and are marked as Red, Amber or Green. Objective:

Rajasthan govt launches Aayu & Sehat Sathi app to battle COVID-19

  • The state government of Rajasthan has partnered with healthcare startup MedCords to launch ‘Aayu & Sehat Sathi app to fight against COVID-19.
  • This app helps state people to consult doctors online and place orders for their medicine requirement in the wake of a lockdown due to COVID-19.
  • Indian startup “MedCord” is fully adopted 7 districts of Rajasthan (Kota, Udaipur, Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, Ajmer, Pali and Jaipur).
  • The app also contains a built-in comprehensive coronavirus guide for the users.
  • The service is provided through the app and the helpline number – 7816811111 supports Hindi and English language.
  • The helpline number helps the feature phone users to consult doctors from anywhere in India.

Karnataka launches pilot project for home delivery through phone, WhatsApp during Covid-19 lockdown

  • Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa launched a pilot project for people to order essential goods either by calling over the phone or using WhatsApp during the lockdown put in place to break the chain of coronavirus infections.

Highlights:

  • The project was to ensure that nobody violated the lockdown by stepping out to get essential goods including vegetables, groceries or medicine.
  • There is a nominal service charge of Rs 10 for each order and contactless delivery is possible.
  • The pilot project has been launched in Bengaluru and people can call on 080 61914960 and provide necessary details like their name, phone number and address and specify a nearby store from which they want the items.
  • The service will be provided through neighbouring kirana stores or the nearest store which has those particular goods in stock.
  • After placing the order, customers will get a confirmation on SMS and a delivery partner will deliver the goods, payment for which can be made either through e-wallets, cards or cash.
  • The service is similar on WhatsApp.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar announces Rs 1,000 assistance for families with no rations cards

  • Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar announced that an assistance of Rs 1,000 will be provided to all families that do not have ration cards but were identified by self-help groups of ‘Jeevika’ in the state.
  • The state government has earlier decided to provide Rs 1,000 to each ration card-holding family in the state following the enforcement of lockdown.
  • Nitish Kumar directed Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar to inform all the district magistrates and sub-divisional magistrates to provide the assistance of Rs 1,000 to each of the family which does not have ration card but has been identified by the Jeevika groups, according to an official release.
  • After providing Rs 1,000 to these families, ration cards should be issued to them (families identified by Jeevika) after completing verification of documents.
  • Assistance of Rs 1000 will be provided to families in urban areas after identifying them through a survey.

Gujarat govt gives approval to “Sujalam Sufalam Jal Sanchay Abhiyan”

  • The government of Gujarat has given the approval of the third edition of his government’s ‘Sujalam Sufalam Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ amid Coronavirus lockdown.
  • The scheme will see the deepening of lakes, check dams and rivers by removing silt.
  • This will be done till June 10, 2020, with people’s participation also as under MNREGA.
  • The scheme was started in 2018 after a weak monsoon. It is a conservation plan to deepen water bodies in the state before the monsoon.

Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district starts “Tiranga” Rapid Screening

  • The Administration of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala has launched a vehicle called ‘Tiranga’ (Total India Remote Analysis Nirogya Abhiyaan) for rapid screening of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • The vehicle is provided with thermal scanning, an infrared thermometer mounted on the bonnet, a two-way microphone system by which individuals inside and out of doors the vehicle can ask one another, a mobile camera which will click photos of their identity cards.
  • The vehicle has been painted with tricolour so that people would immediately recognise it as an initiative of the government and leave the health workers alone.
  • The screening will be done in containment zones and buffer zones and in the camps for migrant workers and destitute people.

Indian herpetologists discover new viper species in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Indian herpetologists have discovered a new species of viper family in Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, and the green pit viper species was discovered by a team led by Zeeshan Mirza.
  • The viper called Trimeresurus Salazar.
  • It has a unique orange to reddish stripe present on the head and body in males.
  • The pit vipers belong to the genus Trimeresurus and are distributed widely across East and South-East Asia.
  • This is the second species discovered within the course of the expedition to Arunachal Pradesh, which reflects the poor nature of biodiversity documentation across North-East India.
  • Dedicated surveys in the future conducted across north-eastern India will help document biodiversity, which is under threat from numerous development activities that include road widening, agriculture, and hydro-electric projects.

  • Iran successfully launched a military satellite and the first satellite of the Islamic Republic of Iran successfully launched into orbit by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

India gifts 23 tonnes of essential medicines to Nepal

  • India and Nepal to fight COVID-19 Pandemic, Ambassador of India to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra handed over 23 tonnes of medicines to Nepal’s Minister for Health and Population Bhanubhakta Dhakal in Kathmandu.
  • The package 8.25 lakhs dosage of essential medicines, including 3.2 lakhs dosage of Paracetamol and 2.5 lakhs dosages of Hydroxychloroquine.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference of SAARC Leaders on 15 March 2020 and offered all possible assistance to India’s neighbors, pledging 10 million US dollars to SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Fund.

Global Report on Food Crises Released by World Food Programme

  • Global Network Against Food Crises report officially released by the UN World Food program.
  • The report indicates around 135 million people across 55 countries and territories experienced acute food insecurity.
  • Around 55 food-crisis countries covered by the report and 75 million children were stunted. 183 million people were classified in Stressed (IPC/CH Phase 2) conditions.
  • Among 43 million live in the Middle East and Asia and 18.5 million live in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • This report is the result of a consensus-based and multi-partner analytical process involving 16 international humanitarian and development partners (in alphabetical order) and various organisations participated all the way to United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

  • World Press Freedom Index 2020 murders of journalists in India in 2019, as against six in the year 2018 and the security situation for the country’s media might seem on the face.

  • India dropped two places on a global press freedom index to be ranked 142nd out of 180 countries in the annual Reporters Without Borders analysis.
  • Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF), or Reporters Without Borders, is a non-profit organization that works to document and combat attacks on journalists around the world.
  • Norway is ranked first in the Index for the fourth year running. China in the 177th position is just three places above North Korea, which is on 180th.
  • South Asia features poorly on the Index, with Pakistan dropping three places to 145, and Bangladesh dropping one place to 151.
