  • NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar has announced that India will achieve economic growth of 8 per cent plus from the fiscal year 2020-21 onwards.
  • The current government is focused on accelerating growth from the current about 7% cent to more than 8% and it will propel the country to easily achieving the target of becoming a five trillion dollar economy.

  • Over seven crore 32 lakh farmer families across the country have received the first and second instalments of 2 thousand rupees each under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana amounting to 14 thousand 646 crore rupees.
  • PM-KISAN envisages covering approximately 14 crore 50 lakh beneficiaries across the country subject to exclusion criteria.

20 thousand wellness centres to be completed this year under Ayushman Bharat

  • Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan announced that a total of 1.5 lakh wellness centres are to be established in the country under this programme
  • Dr Harsh Vardhan termed the Ayushman Bharat programme as a successful model in implementing universal health.

  • Its estimated cost is Rs 9,000.

Kerala to set up India’s first space tech park in Thiruvananthapuram

  • The Kerala government will set up the country’s first space tech park at Thiruvananthapuram’s Knowledge City.
  • The move is aimed at making the city a manufacturing hub for space-related technology.
  • A space museum named after former President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will also be a part of the infrastructure.
  • The entire investment will be made by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), a major space research centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • The government will lease 20.01 acres of land to the Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Ltd (KSITIL) to develop the space park.
  • CEO of Kerala government owned ICT Academy, Santhosh Kurup, has been appointed as the special officer of the space park project.

Rajasthan government launches ‘police training’ programme for school students

  • The Rajasthan government has formally launched a training programme for school students, in line with the National Cadet Corps practice.
  • It aims to curb rising adolescent delinquency and make them aware of basic laws and legal procedures.
  • The training programme initiated jointly by the state education and police departments will be available in selected government schools in the current academic session.
  • The two-year programme for students of classes 8 and 9 aims to curb rising adolescent delinquency, strengthen the teenagers mentally and physically, and make them aware of basic laws and legal procedures.
  • Under the programme, the government school students would be trained as Student Police Cadets (SPC).
  • The schools selected for the SPC training programme would be granted Rs 1 lakh for the two-year course.

In J&K Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates two bridges

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday inaugurated 1000 meter long Ujh Bridge in Kathua district and 617.40-meter Basantar Bridge in samba district and dedicated them to the nation.
  • Terming construction of Ujh and Basantar bridges a great achievement by Border Roads Organisation.

The US and South Korean military exercises to be held in August despite warning from North Korea

  • The 19-2 Dong Maeng (alliance) exercise, an annual military exercise between the US and South Korean military exercises, will be held in the month of August.
  • The announcement was made by Choi Jong-kun, the secretary for peace planning to South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

  • The Eleventh biennial edition of DefExpo India – 2020 is scheduled to be held for the first time in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow in February 2020.
  • The main theme of the DefExpo India- 2020 will be — India – the Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub and the focus will be on Digital Transformation of Defence.
  • The four-day event will begin from 5th of February.
  • The exhibition will also highlight the emergence of Uttar Pradesh as an attractive destination for investment in the defence sector and act as a platform for alliances and joint ventures in the defence industry.
  • The DefExpo will provide an opportunity to the major foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers to collaborate with the Indian defence industry and help promote Make in India initiative.

AGREEMENTS and MoU signed

CCEA approved the 2,880 megawatts Dibang hydro power project in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the 2,880 megawatts Dibang hydro power project in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • It approved a Rs.1,600 crore pre-investment and clearance expenditure for the Rs.28,080.35 crore strategic project.
  • The project will produce 11223MU (Million Units) of energy in 90% dependable year.
  • Dibang project is a storage based hydro-electric project. It is the largest ever Hydro Electric Projects to be constructed in India, so far. The Project is located on Dibang River, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The planned height of the Concrete Gravity Dam is 278 metres.

Indian Navy signed a major deal worth $50 million with ISI to supply MSRAM systems

  • Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has signed a major deal worth USD50 million with Indian Navy.
  • Aim: to supply complementary Naval Medium Range Surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) systems to the Indian Navy and the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.

  • India’s Vivek Kohli and M P Singh have been elected as chairman and secretary general respectively of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF).
  • MP Singh, who is secretary general at Table Tennis Federation of India (TTF), was unanimously elected as secretary general of CTTF.
  • The CTTF president is Dushyant Chautala.
  • It is for the first time that all the three positions in CTTF are held by Indians.

  • In Cricket, India-A defeated West Indies-A by eight wickets in the fifth and final unofficial one-dayer, completes a 4-1 series triumph in Antigua.

Indian bodybuilder Ravinder Malik clinches Mr South Asia title

  • Indian bodybuilder Ravinder Kumar Malik has clinched Mr. South Asia title.
  • He has crowned the overall champion at 12th South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • Malik, the winner of 80 kg category, was adjudged best bodybuilder among the winners of nine senior men’s weight categories.
  • Afghanistan won team championship by securing a top position with 535 points and won a total of 15 medals including six gold, four silver and five bronze.
  • Host Nepal finished second with 445 points, while India remained third with 380 points and bagged three gold, seven silver and six bronze medals.
  • India claimed four gold, five silver and one bronze medal.
  • The Maldives won three gold and two bronze medals.
  • Pakistan bagged one gold, two silver and two bronze.
  • Bhutan finished last with a bronze medal.
  • This championship is organised by South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation under the auspices of Nepal Bodybuilding and Fitness Association.

Hima Das wins gold in 400m race, 5th in a month

  • Indian sprinter Hima Das won a gold medal in the 400-meter race with a season-best time of 52.09 seconds at Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic.
  • It was Hima’s fifth gold medal since July 2 when she ran her first competitive race in Europe.
  • Hima has already won gold in 200 meters race at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix and Kutno Athletics Meet in Poland.
  • She won her third 200 meters gold at the Kladno Athletics Meet and fourth gold at the Tabor Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic.

  • He scored a total of 199 strokes followed by Chen and New Zealand’s Joshua Bai at second and third position with 202 and 207 strokes respectively.

PV Sindhu wins her first silver medal of the year at Indonesia Open

  • World number five PV Sindhu won her first silver medal of the year after finishing second at the Indonesia Open.
  • Prithu Gupta of Delhi selected as Indias 64th Grandmaster
  • Delhi’s Prithu Gupta becomes India’s 64th Grandmaster. He got Elo around 2500 points.
  • He defeated IM Lev Yankelevich in the fifth round of the Portuguese League 2019.
  • He received his first GM norm at the Gibraltar Masters.
  • He achieved his second norm at the Biel Masters on the same year.
  • He got the final norm at the Porticcio Open and finally achieved the required ELO points.

India, China to carry out major military exercise ‘Hand in Hand’

  • India and China will carry out a major military exercise called ‘Hand-in-Hand’ in Meghalaya this year.
  • The planning conference for the exercise will be held next month.
  • The exercise will take place at Umroi, Meghalaya.
  • The exercise was previously held in December last year at Chengdu, China.

  • Repco Micro Finance, an NBFC-MFI promoted by Repco Bank has received Nabard’s award for outstanding performance in terms of self-help group (SHG) linkage in Tamil Nadu for 2018-19.
  • Currently it operates from 90 branches in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and has an employee strength of about 600 people.

  • The mission objectives of Chandrayaan-2 include studying mineralogy and chemical composition of lunar soil, to search for water or ice in the near-South Pole of the moon, examining its atmosphere, studying lunar seismic activities and to carry out mapping of the moon using high-resolution cameras.
  • One of its main goals is to make a soft-landing of an indigenous lander on the uncharted territory of the moon.
