The 94th Raising Day of MNS is observed on 1 October

SBI becomes first Indian bank to have office in Australia’s Victoria

  • The State Bank of India opened its Melbourne office and becoming the first Indian bank to have a branch in the Australian state of Victoria.
  • The Melbourne office will assist the growing trade and investment relations between Victoria and India and is the outcome of the state’s 10-year India Strategy.
  • This investment by India’s largest commercial bank is a testament to our thriving financial services sector and our highly skilled workforce.

Indian Army and Bank of Baroda signed MoU

  • Indian Army and Bank of Baroda entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • This MoU lays down the basis on which banking services would be provided by Bank of Baroda to serving and retired personnel of the Indian Army.
  • The MoU was signed by Lt Gen Harsha Gupta, Director General (Manpower and Personnel Services) and Shri VS Khichi, Executive Director, Bank of Baroda in presence of Shri PS Jayakumar, Managing Director, Bank of Baroda.

Gandhi Film Festival to be organised in Mumbai

  • Film Division in association with India Tourism will organise a “Gandhi Film Festival” in Mumbai from 2nd to 6th October, 2019.
  • This film festival is a part of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebration and will focus on Gandhiji’s message of non-violence and Swachh Bharat.
  • The select documentaries and feature films will be screened at the Films Division Complex, including: The Making of Mahatma, Gandhi, Gandhi My Father and Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara.

UNESCO, DD Join Hands for TV Show on Gandhi’s 150th Anniversary

  • UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Doordarshan, country’s public service broadcaster have joined hands to telecast TV bilingual programme ‘Mahatma Lives‘ or ‘Bapu Zinda Hain’ on 1-2 October 2019.
  • UNESCO and Doordarshan will telecast TV bilingual programme to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
  • The objective of the programme is to celebrate his ideas and teachings and how it has shaped the lives of people in India as well as around the world.

ESIC observed Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign

  • Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) observed Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign from 15 September to 2 October at various Regional Offices/Sub-Regional Offices, Hospitals and Dispensaries across the country.

A 1,650 kg charkha made of plastic to be inaugurated on 2 October

  • A 1,650 kg charkha (spinning wheel) which was made out of plastic waste will be inaugurated on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
  • It will be inaugurated by MP Mahesh Sharma.
  • The effort aims to raise awareness among the people for proper disposal of plastic too.
  • The charkha symbolizes Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of self-reliance.
  • It is being touted to be the biggest yet made using plastic waste.
  • Around 1,250 kg of plastic waste has been used to create the charkha.
  • The charkha measures 14 feet, 20 feet and 8 feet.
  • It is located near the Mahamaya flyover. Noida Authority is running a campaign from 11 September to 27 October to ensure voluntary plastic collection from citizens.

Kerala tops NITI Aayog’s School Education Quality Index

  • Kerala has topped the “School Education Quality Index” launched by NITI Aayog.
  • Uttar Pradesh was ranked at the bottom of the list. Chandigarh has topped the list of Union Territories.
  • The School Education Quality Index assesses States on the basis of learning outcomes, access, equity and infrastructure and facilities, using survey data, self-reported data from States and third-party verification.
  • Tamil Nadu was the top performer in access and equity outcomes, while Karnataka led in learning outcomes. Haryana had the best infrastructure and facilities.

MietY, NeGD, and NLIU signs MoU to implement an Online Capacity Building Programme

  • National eGovernance Division (NeGD), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal signed an MoU at New Delhi.
  • The MoU aims to implement an Online Capacity Building Programme on Cyber Law, Crime Investigation and Digital Forensics through NeGD Learning Management System (LMS).
  • NeGD in collaboration with NLIU Bhopal has taken the initiative to offer 9 months Online PG Diploma Course in Cyber Law, Crime Investigation & Digital Forensics to 1000 officials. The courses will be offered through its Learning Management System (LMS).
  • The program will be implemented under the Digital India Programme.
  • To facilitate the course a Cyber Forensics Lab shall be set up in the premises of National Law University (NLU) Delhi.

APPOINTMENT

KS Dhatwalia appointed as PIB’s Principal DG

  • Senior Indian Information Service officer, KS Dhatwalia, has been appointed as the Principal Director General of Press Information Bureau.
  • He will succeed Sitanshu Kar and will be the 28th Principal Spokesperson of the government.
  • He has worked in key positions in various Media Units of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

SPORTS CURRENT AFFAIRS

Wilson-Satish pair wins gold at Asian Age Group Championships

  • India’s N. Wilson Singh and Satish Kumar Prahapati won the gold medal in the 10m platform synchronised diving event at the Asian Age Group Championships held in Bengaluru.
  • The duo of Wilson and Satish scored 290.19 score to beat Uzbekistan’s Zaynetdinov Marsel and Khasanov Botir, who scored 280.53 points.
  • The bronze medal went to Mojtaba Valipour and Masood Vakili of Iran with a score of 266.16.

Fraser-Pryce wins World Championship 100m gold

  • Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won gold medal in 100m race of 2019 IAAF World Championships held in Doha.
  • This was her 4th women’s 100 metres world title.
  • She defeated Britain’s European champion Dina Asher-Smith who took silver medal while Marie-Josee Ta Lou finished 3rd.

  • Mercedes Valtteri Bottas (Finland) and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (Monaco) won the second and third spot respectively.
  • The victory was the 82nd of Hamilton’s career, and ninth of the season, leaving him nine short of Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91.

Land-attack version of BrahMos supersonic missile successfully test-fired

  • India successfully test-fired a land-attack version of BrahMos supersonic missile from Chandipur coast in Odisha’s Balasore district.
  • DRDO conducted the test-fire successfully.
  • The missile, with a strike range of 290km, can be fired from land as well as sea-based platforms. BrahMos is a joint venture between the DRDO and the NPOM of Russia.

Grammy-winning opera star ‘Jessye Norman’ passes away

  • Jessye Norman, the renowned international opera star whose passionate soprano voice won her 4 Grammy awards and the national medal of arts, passed away recently.
  • She was a trailblazing performer and one of the rare black singers to attain worldwide stardom in the opera world.
  • Norman, at 52, became the youngest person to earn the Kennedy Center Honor in the organization’s 20-year history.

Legendary singer Jose Jose passes away

  • Legendary Mexican singer Jose Jose who was often called ‘El Principe de la Cancion’ or ‘The Prince of Song, passes away.
  • In a career of more than four-decade, the singer sold millions of albums and picked by 6 Grammy nominations.

INA veteran from Tamil Nadu V Ganesan passes away

  • Indian National Army (INA) veteran V Ganesan passed away.
  • He joined Netaji’s INA at the age of 18 and received six months of military training in Singapore.
  • While participating in the battle against the British Army in Myanmar, he was arrested and was imprisoned for 10 months in Yangon jail and was later repatriated to India.
  • He was honoured by the President of India in 2012 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • He also a recipient of Copper Plaques from both the central and state governments.
