RBI Allows Payment Of All Recurring Bills Through BBPS

  • RBI expanded the scope of Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to cover all repetitive bill payments.
  • They may include school fees, insurance premiums and municipal taxes.
  • Currently, the facility of payment of recurring bills through BBPS is available only in five segments namely direct to home (DTH), electricity, gas, telecom and water.

ECGC launches scheme “Nirvik” to ease the lending process

  • Ministry of Commerce & Industry through Export Credit Guarantee Corporation has introduced a new Export Credit Insurance Scheme called NIRVIK.
  • The Niryat Rin Vikash Yojana has been launched to enhance loan availability to exporters and to ease the lending process.
  • Under the new scheme NIRVIK, up to 90 per cent of the principal amount and interest will be covered through insurance.
  • During the launch, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal revealed that Central government will give support of Rs 8,500 crore to Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India in the next 5 years.

  • India’s first National Antimicrobial Resistance Hub was recently inaugurated in Kolkata.

  • The centre was jointly inaugurated by the ICMR, in association with the U.S. Consulate of Kolkata and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Union Government Launches Web Portal to Find Your Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone

  • Department of Telecommunications (DoT) unveiled a portal in Mumbai which will help mobile phone users trace their stolen or lost mobile phones.
  • The name of the project is called the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR).
  • This project is aimed at blocking of reported lost or stolen mobile phones across mobile networks, discouraging their theft, as well as facilitating in tracing of such phones.
  • DoT launched a maritime communications service and revealed VSAT solutions provider Nelco will undertake broadband services in the maritime sector.

  • The union government launched a steel import monitoring system (SIMS) to provide advance information about steel imports to various stakeholders including producers and importers to have effective policy interventions.
  • Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and his junior colleague Hardeep Singh Puri launched the system developed in consultation with Ministry of Steel on the pattern of US Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) system.

Manipur to host UN conference on drugs on HIV AIDS

  • Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla announced that the state is going to host the United Nations International Conference to discuss the issues related to drug menace, HIV/AIDS problems in the region on September 30 and October 1.
  • Heptualla made the announcement during the 13th Foundation Day Celebration of the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) held at Hotel Imphal.

BMC announces cash prizes ranging from Rs. 10 lakh to 1 crore to encourage waste management

  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared cash prizes ranging from Rs. 10 lakh to 1 crore to encourage waste management.
  • the BMC will select six NGOs per zone, of which the best performing NGO will be awarded Rs. 50 lakh, the second Rs. 25 lakh, the third Rs. 10 lakh and the others Rs. 5 lakh each.
  • However, this money will have to be used towards development work in the respective areas only.
  • Five Corporators per zone who take considerable efforts to promote cleanliness in their wards will receive between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 50 lakh for their development fund.

  • She is the first female Indian Armed Forces Officer to be posted as a military diplomat in any of the Indian missions abroad.

  • The 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) will be organized from 30th of October to 9th of November this year.

  • Meghalaya-based rights activist Agnes Kharshiing, who survived an assault by the coal mafia almost a year ago, received the 11th International Hrant Dink Award.
  • She received the award along with Turkish activist against male violence, Nebahat Akkoc.
  • The two activists were presented the award that commemorates the memory of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, who was killed in 2007, in Istanbul.
  • The Hrant Dink Award is presented every year to individuals, organisations or groups that work for a world free from discrimination, racism and violence.

Neena Gupta wins two awards at Boston Film Festival

  • Bollywood actor Neena Gupta has won 2 awards at Indian International Film Festival of Boston. The actress won the Best Actress award for ‘Badhaai Ho‘ and her film ‘The Last Color‘ emerged victorious in Best Feature Film category.
  • ‘The Last Color’ was directed by Vikas Khanna.
  • The film deals with taboo surrounding widows in Vrindavan and Varanasi in India.

Bangladesh School project wins Aga Khan Architecture Award

  • Arcadia Education Project which involves construction of floating school for marginalised children in South Kanarchor of Bangladesh, has been awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Architecture Award 2019.
  • The award ceremony was held in Kazan, republic of Tatarastan.
  • The architect of the project Saif Ul Haque designed a school which remains on the ground during dry season and floats when the area is submerged in water during monsoon.
  • He utilised only the local material-bamboo, used tyres and steel drums for constructing the amphibious structure for school.
