  • The 15th Indo-US Economic Summit was organized by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce-North India Council (IACC-NIC) in New Delhi.

BHEL commissions 1,320 MW thermal plant in Jharsuguda Odisha

  • Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) India’s largest power equipment manufacturer announced it has commissioned a 1,320 Megawatt (Mw) power plant in Odisha.
  • The IB Thermal Power Station with two units of 660 Megawatt capacity each is owned by Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGC) a joint venture between the state government and US-based AES.
  • BHEL previously set up two units of 210 MW capacity each at IB Thermal Power Station operating for over 20 years.
  • BHEL supplied sets are contributing 100 per cent of the coal-based power stations installed by OPGC.

Google To Pay Billion Dollars For Settlement Over Tax Evasion In France

  • US internet giant Google agreed a settlement totalling 945 million euros ($1.0 billion) to end a tax dispute in France under an agreement announced in court.
  • The company will pay a 500-million-euro fine for tax evasion, as well as a further 465 million euros to settle claims with French tax authorities.

Govt declared a train service to Bangladesh from Tripura by next year

  • Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region announced that the Railway link service between the Agartala-Akhaura in Bangladesh will be completed by 2020 for Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER).
  • The Bangladesh railway link project is funded by the Ministry of DoNER. The cost allocated for the project is Rs 972.52 crores.
  • The project can link Agartala with Bangladesh Railway Network at Akhaura.
  • It will cut the traveling time period for passenger and goods movement from Kolkata to Agartala of 38 hours to 15 hours.

HRD Minister Confers CBSE Teachers Award 2018 To 35 Teachers

  • Central Board of Secondary Education conferred Teacher’s Award 2018 to 35 Teachers and Principals.
  • The awards were given away by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
  • The Union HRD Minister launched the CBSE’s portal Vidyadhan on Diksha App, a Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing National Forum for Teachers.

Centre to set up 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres

  • Union Government has set a target of setting up 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres across the country.
  • Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy Minister Shripad Yesso Naik announced this during the inauguration of a Unani Medical Centre and Siddha Clinical Research Unit.
  • Out of 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres, 4000 centres will be set up in 2019.

President Kovind inaugurates Mahatma Gandhi’s bust in Switzerland

  • President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated a bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Villeneuve in Switzerland.
  • The President is on a five- day visit to Switzerland to boost business and cultural ties.
  • The bust was unveiled to mark the visit of Mahatma to Villeneuve in 1931.
  • The inauguration also coincides with 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the nation.

Govt to offer 1000 PhD Fellowships to ASEAN students at IITs

  • Government is launching a major programme offering 1000 PhD Fellowships to ASEAN students at IITs in India.
  • The admission portal for the programme is being executed by IIT Delhi.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will launch the programme in New Delhi on 16th of this month.

  • Rajasthan has launched “Jan Soochna Portal-2019” a public information portal to provide information about government authorities and departments to the public.
  • The portal ensures compliance with Section 4(2) of the RTI Act mandating the public authorities to disclose information in the public domain.
  • The State government has collaborated with the civil society groups to develop the portal, presently giving information pertaining to 13 departments on a single platform.
  • The portal empowers the common people with access to useful information.

  • As part of Mission Reach Out, the Indian Army has been conducting various people-friendly campaigns in the state to highlight the benefits of removing Article 370 among the local population.
  • The Army conducted an interaction drive with local people, school students and sarpanches in border village Naga of Jammu Division.

Kamal Nath lays foundation stone for metro rail project in Indore

  • In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Kamal Nath today laid the foundation stone for around 7,500 crore rupees metro rail project in Indore.
  • Mr Kamal Nath formally started the construction work of this project near the toll block on MR-10 Road in the city.
  • A new chapter of urban public transport is being added in the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh through this metro project.
  • A total of 31.55 kilometre-long ring corridor is proposed to be built under the metro rail project in the largest city in terms of population in the state.
  • The metro rail project will be completed by August 2023 in a phased manner.
  • The blueprint of the Metro Rail project in Indore was prepared during the tenure of the previous BJP Government of the state.

790 Gram Panchayats connected with optical fibre in Maharashtra

  • 790 Gram Panchayats have been connected with optical fibre in Pune district of Maharashtra under the central Bharat Net scheme.
  • It is announced by Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar.
  • Wi-Fi facility has been provided to 155 of these Gram Panchayats.
  • Nine lakh youth from the district have benefited under Mudra Yojana, saying 8,000 crore rupees have been distributed to them in the form of loans.
  • Wi-Fi facility has been installed at 46 of the 58 railway stations in Pune Division.
  • The Minister informed that libraries will be opened in all the schools of Pune district under Integrated School Education scheme and sports material will also be provided to them.

  • The US has topped as the world’s top oil exporter.

Andrew Strauss becomes chairman of ECB’s cricket committee

  • Former England captain Andrew Strauss has been appointed as the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s cricket committee.
  • As a chairman, Strauss will monitor all levels of cricket in England and Wales to ensure a “thriving professional game at the heart of the sport”.
  • He played 100 tests for England from 2004-12, scoring more than 7,000 runs at an average of 40.91, and captained the team to two Ashes series wins.
  • He also served as England’s director of cricket between 2015 and 2018.

India bags 34 medals in 10th Asia Pacific Youth Games

  • Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju congratulated Indian contingent for excellent performance in the 10th Asian Pacific Youth Games in Vladivostok.
  • India won total 16 gold, 13 silver and 5 bronze medals in seven different sports.
  • Indian Judokas, Mahesh Saini (66 kg), Vishal (81 kg) and Rohit (50 kg) won gold while Siddharth won silver.
  • Yoshiki won gold in the girl’s singles while the girl’s doubles team also won gold in Table Tennis.
  • The Indian swimming team finished as the overall winners in their sport.
  • Assam swimmer Astha Choudhury won five medals including two gold and three silver.
  • Astha bagged gold medals in 4×50 metre mixed freestyle and 4×50 mixed individual medley relay.
  • The gold medals, Astha won silver medals in 100 metre freestyle, 200 metre freestyle and 100 metre individual medley categories.

Indian Ambassador to UAE Navdeep Suri conferred with UAE Order of Zayed

  • Sheikh Khalifa, conferred the Order of Zayed II first class.
  • Mr Suri was given the honour in recognition of his efforts during his tenure and his contribution to the development and strengthening of relations between the UAE and India.
  • Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, presented the Order to the ambassador during a meeting at the ministry in Abu Dhabi.

Water discovered for the first time in atmosphere of habitable exoplanets K2-18b

  • The first time discovered water in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting within the habitable zone of a distant star.
  • The finding makes the world is called K2-18b – a plausible candidate in the search for alien life.
  • K2-18b is 111 light-years – about 650 million million miles – from Earth.

India to develop 60 supercomputers in 3 years

  • Government of India has decided to indigenously build 60 supercomputers in the next three years.
  • The announcement was made by Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary of Department of Science and Technology.
  • The 60 supercomputer systems will be implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
  • Initially, six machines will be installed by the end of the year.

Former bureaucrat B.N. Yugandhar passes away

  • Former bureaucrat and Secretary to the PMO, B.N. Yugandhar passed away.
  • He served as Secretary to the PMO between May 1995 and March 1997 during former PM P.V. Narasimha Rao’s term.
  • He also served in the Ministry of Rural Development from March 1993 to May 1995.
  • N. Yugandhar was the father of Microsoft’s present Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella.
