National Workshop on e-office held in New Delhi

  • National Workshop on e-office was inaugurated in New Delhi by Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh.
  • During the National Workshop on e-office, Centralized Public Grievance Redress And Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) Reforms also launched by the minister.
  • After the launch, he stated that the number of public grievances has increased to 19 lakh at present from 2 lakh in 2014.
  • The Government of India in 2019 has received 18.7 lakh public grievances and disposed 18.1 lakh of them.
  • The Centralized Public Grievance Redress And Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) 7.0 version has mapped the last mile grievance officers hence saving the time as well as improving the quality of disposal of cases.

Cabinet approved capital infusion for OICL, NICL, UIICL

  • The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the in-principle approval for capital infusion for three Public Sector General Insurance Companies (PSGICs), namely, Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL), United India Insurance Company Limited (UIICL), and National Insurance Company Limited (NICL).

Approval:

♦ The Cabinet has allowed the immediate release of Rs.2500 Crore for the 3 PSGICs.

♦ The capital infusion is in light of the critical financial position and breach of regulatory solvency requirements of 3 PSGICs.

♦ The move by the cabinet is to make these companies meet the solvency ratio criteria of the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority (IRDA).

NHAI to waive off FASTag cost between 15-29 Feb

  • National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to waive off the FASTag cost of 100 rupees for NHAI FASTag between 15th to 29th of this month.
  • Road users can visit any authorized physical point-of-sale locations with a valid Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle and get an NHAI FASTag free of cost.
  • The applicable security deposit and minimum balance amount for FASTag wallet will remain unchanged.
  • The decision is aimed at further increasing digital collection of user fee through FASTag at NH fee plazas.
  • NHAI FASTag may be purchased from all NH fee plazas, RTOs, Common Service Centres, transport hubs and petrol pumps.

  • Government has decided to rename Pravasi Bhartiya Kendra in New Delhi as Sushma Swaraj Bhawan and Foreign Service Institute in the national capital as Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs on the eve of the birth anniversary of Mrs Swaraj and in the honour of the legacy and decades of public service of the former External Affairs Minister.
  • During her four decade long career, Sushma Swaraj was elected to the Lok Sabha four times and thrice to Rajya Sabha.
  • She served as Minister for External Affairs, Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Health and Family Welfare.

Largest air quality monitoring network of India to be installed in Mumbai

  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the setting up of an air quality monitoring network of 90 stations in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The air quality monitoring network of 90 stations will make it the largest such network in India, overtaking Delhi, which is currently having 38 monitors.

Bimstec disaster management exercise-2020 organized in Odisha

  • The Uttarakhand State cabinet approved a 377 sq km area for the proposed eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) for the Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) on 12 February.
  • The proposal will be forwarded to the Central government.

ESZ allotment:

♦ The creation of the ESZ has been an issue as the villagers protested villages in the ESZ fearing loss of livelihood due to the restrictions imposed by the creation of such a zone.

♦ The proposed ESZ does not include any village, for which the maximum area has been defined as 7.96 km.

♦ Earlier, the Uttarakhand high court had directed that a 10km area around CTR and other sanctuaries in Uttarakhand to be declared as ESZ.

  • The UK-based OneWeb company has sent 34 satellites into orbit on a single Soyuz rocket, from Baikonur port, Kazakhstan.

  • This is the 50th Soyuz mission conducted by Arianespace, as the company plans to perform 19 more medium-lift Soyuz from three spaceports by 2021.

New Zealand unveils first AI police officer called Ella

  • New Zealand Police has recruited an Artificial Intelligence (AI) cop called Ella to the force. New Zealand’s Intela AI and Soul Machines led the AI and digital human development of the AI cop.

AI cop Ella:

♦ Ella is a life-like virtual assistant. It uses real-time animation to emulate face-to-face interaction in an empathetic way.

♦ It will be stationed in the lobby of the force’s national headquarters in Wellington from 17 February.

♦ It will welcome visitors to the building, telling the staff that they’ve arrived, and directing them to collect their passes.

♦ It can talk to visitors about certain issues, such as the force’s non-emergency number and police vetting procedures.

♦ After reviewing its current roles, a range of new responsibilities will be added in the future.

President Kovind presents President’s Colour to INS Shivaji

  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented ‘President’s Colour’ to the INS Shivaji at a ceremony in Lonavala, Maharashtra.
  • The Presentation of Colour or Standards by the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces is an acknowledgement of the unit’s meritorious service.
  • INS Shivaji was commissioned in 1945.
  • It is now the premier technical training establishment of the Indian Navy with the motto Kar-masu Kaushalam.
  • INS Shivaji imparts training in an engineering discipline to personnel of the Navy, Coast Guard, other sister services and allied countries. It has trained over two lakh officers and sailors, both Indian and international, since inception.
  • All courses conducted at INS Shivaji are recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education.

South Indian Bank bagged two awards at the Banking Technology 2019 awards by IBA

  • South Indian Bank has bagged two awards at the Banking Technology 2019 awards instituted by the Indian Banks’ Association.
  • This event was held in Indian Bank Association’s 15th Annual Banking Technology Conference, Expo and Awards held in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The South Indian Bank emerged the winner in the ‘Most Customer-Centric Bank Using Technology’ category and runner up in the ‘Best Payments Initiative’ category amongst small Banks’.

  • Veteran journalist Nandu R Kulkarni passed away recently.
  • He was serving as the Mumbai bureau chief of “The Statesman” since 1992.
  • He started his career in 1976 with ‘The Indian Express’ and worked there for 16 years.
  • He reported on various subjects like economic offences, politics and business during his long career.
