RBI keeps key interest rates unchanged

  • On October 9, 2020 the Reserve Bank of India in its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held.

Highlights of the meeting:

  • To keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 4.0 percent and reverse repo rate remains unchanged at 3.35 percent.
  • The Projected the Indian economy to contract 9.5 percent in the current fiscal 2020-21.
  • The RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) system for real time fund transfer will become 24X7 from December 2020.
  • Allow banks to increase exposure to retail and small borrowers up to Rs 7.5 crore
  • The bank will extend scheme for co-lending to all NBFC, HFC.
  • Increased the size of open market operations to Rs. 20,000 crores.

BRICS Bank approves USD 741 million for Delhi-Meerut rapid rail, Mumbai metro project

  • For the infrastructure projects in India including Delhi-Meerut rapid rail and the Mumbai metro, the New Development Bank (BRICS Bank) has approved funds worth USD 741 million.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Project

  • The rapid rail network will connect the National Capital Territory of Delhi with the cities of Meerut and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
  • It has a design speed of 180 km per hour and a maximum operating speed of 160 km per hour.
  • It will also help reduce congestion in Delhi by offering people an alternative of settling in surrounding cities.

Mumbai Metro Rail II (Line 6) Project

  • The metro rail line 6 will have a length of about 14.47 km. It will provide much needed rail connectivity between the western and eastern suburbs.
  • The metro rail project will be implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will distribute property cards

  • Under Svamitva scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will distribute property cards to rural land owners.
  • The property cards are to be distributed to villages in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttarakhand.

Svamitva Scheme:

  • Svamitva is Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas to provide the right to document residential properties to the rural population. It enables the rural population to use property as a financial asset.

Objective of the Scheme:

  • to survey lands in rural areas using Drone Technology and the survey is to be conducted over a period of four years that is between 2020 and 2024.

  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is to launch “Impact based Cyclonic Warning Systems”.

Aim:

  • To minimise economic losses and damages due to property in the intense weather system.

Benefit:

  • The new system will provide district or location specific warnings.
  • The warnings will be based on information related to the infrastructure in the region, local population, settlements, land use.
  • The New System was designed and developed by the National Disaster Management Authority.
