The 2019 Australian Open was a Grand Slam tennis tournament that took place at Melbourne Park from 14 to 27 January 2019.
This was the first Australian Open to feature final set tie-breaks, which have been introduced for all match formats. If the match reaches 6–6 in the final set, the first player to score 10 points and be leading by at least 2 points wins the match.
Katie Boulter and Ekaterina Makarova were the first players in a main draw to compete in the new tie-break format.
2019 Australian Open – Men’s Singles
Roger Federer was the two-time defending champion but lost in the fourth round to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Similarly, Tsitsipas became the first Greek player to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam singles’ tournament.
Novak Djokovic won a record seventh Australian Open title, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final, 6–3, 6–2, 6–3 in two hours and four minutes. So, this was Djokovic’s 15th Grand Slam title, surpassing Pete Sampras for third place on the all-time list, behind Federer and Nadal. Also, He retained the ATP no. 1 singles ranking by reaching the fourth round. Nadal was also in contention for the top ranking at the start of the tournament.
2019 Australian Open – Women’s Singles
Caroline Wozniacki was the defending champion. But lost in the third round to Maria Sharapova.
Naomi Osaka won the title, defeating Petra Kvitová 7–6(7–2), 5–7, 6–4 in the final. By winning the tournament, Osaka took over the WTA no. 1 singles ranking from Simona Halep and also became the first player since Jennifer Capriati to win their first two Grand Slam titles in consecutive fashion.
Naomi Osaka, the reigning US Open & Australian Open champion, became the first singles player, male or female, from Japan to reach No. 1.
2019 Australian Open – Men’s Doubles
Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut achieved the Career Grand Slam in men’s doubles after defeating Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–1).
2019 Australian Open – Women’s Doubles
Samantha Stosur and Zhang Shuai defeated defending champions Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic 6–3, 6–4.
2019 Australian Open – Mixed Doubles
Barbora Krejčíková and Rajeev Ram won the title, defeating Astra Sharma and John-Patrick Smith in the final, 7–6(7–3), 6–1.
