and I will have it.” This singular motto united millions of hearts and was the
driving force that brought India its independence against the British rule 69
years ago on the midnight of the 15th of August. We, the Indians
celebrate this day, till date to commemorate the long and continuous struggle
for freedom and pay respect to the millions of lives that were sacrificed to
make this day possible. The celebrations begin with the Prime Minister of India,
unfurling the National Flag above the historic Lahori Gate at Red Fort, in New Delhi.
21 gunshots are fired in honour of the solemn occasion. The Chief Ministers of the state capitals hoist
the tri-coloured flag in their respective state capitals .The 15th
of August is one of the National Holidays where individuals, public and private
buildings are allowed to hoist the national flag in remembrance of this holy
day.

hoisted in Parsee Bagan Square, Calcutta in 1906 and had 3 colours viz. red,
yellow and green. In later years another version of the flag was made by
Pingali Venkayya at Bezwada in 1921 which was subsequently finalized. India’s
national flag now consists of three strips or bands. The first strip being
Saffron which stands for courage and sacrifice , the middle band is White which
stands for peace, truth , purity and the last band being the Green colour which
stands for fertility and chivalry . The middle White band has the Ashoka Chakra
embedded in it which stands for Righteousness . Khadi Development and Village
Industries Commission is the only licensed flag production and supply unit in
India now.

home to people irrespective of their caste and religion. North Korea, South
Korea and Bahrain share their Independence Day with us. There had been a number
of movements which ultimately led us to our freedom. The Sepoy mutiny of 1857
was one of the strongest turning points in Indian freedom history which were
later followed by The Non-cooperation movement, the Civil disobedience movement
and lastly the Quit India movement which was the final whistle-blower for the
British to leave India. India got her official national anthem Jana Gana Mana
in 1950 and the song still lingers on our lips. After becoming independent
India has been witness to many developments but being one of the largest
democracies in the world, the onus is on every citizen to participate in making
India the ‘heaven on Earth’ . Lastly , in words of Subhas Chandra Bose “ One
individual may die for an idea, but the idea will, after his death, incarnate
itself in a thousand lives” and thus our idea of Independence will echo in our hearts
for all the days to come.
