  1. NPCI on Monday launched next generation online payments solution – Unified
    Payments Interface (UPI)

    will leverage trends such as increasing smartphone adoption and deeper
    penetration of mobile data.
  2. Country’s largest service
    provider Bharti Airtel today
    said its mobile commerce subsidiary,
    Airtel M Commerce
    Services
    , had received payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank
    of India.
  3. XBRL
    filing was in news on 11
    April 2016 as the Union Corporate Affair Ministry exempted the housing finance
    companies from it
    . For this, the ministry amended the Companies (Filing
    of Documents and Forms in Extensible Business Reporting Language) Rules.
  4. Mother Teresa was posthumously
    conferred with the UK’s prestigious Founders Award 2016.
  5. Delhi-based Priyadarshini Chatterjee on
    9 April 2016 was announced the winner of the FBB Femina Miss India World
    2016 at the 53rd edition of the Femina Miss India
    beauty pageant
    held in Mumbai. She was crowned the title by Aditi Arya, Femina Miss India
    2015.
  6. Investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova of Azerbaijan
    on 8 April 2016 was chosen for the UNESCO or Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom
    Prize 2016.
  7. The Union Government on 8 April
    2016 approved country’s first Metrino Pod project for
    Gurgaon, for which the state government would not have to pay anything
    .
    The work on this project would start by 1 June 2016.
  8. Lee Chong Wei on
    10 April 2016 won the men’s singles title at the Malaysia Open 2016
    held at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam, Malaysia
  9. Danny Willett on 10 April 2016 won the
    US Masters, the first Briton to do so since Nick Faldo in 1996. Willett
    grabbed the title after defeating defending champion Jordan Spieth.
  10. Anthony Joshua on 9 April 2016 won the International Boxing
    Federation heavyweight title
    . He knocked out Charles Martin in the
    second round at the O2 Arena in London.
  11. Federation Internationale de
    Football Association (FIFA)
    on 7 April 2016 released the April 2016
    edition of the FIFA or Coca-Cola World Ranking. Argentina Men’s Soccer team
    stood at world number one, pushing back the Belgium team to second
    position. 
  12. The World Bank Group (WBG) on 7
    April 2016 adopted the Climate Change Action Plan. The plan was designed
    to help countries meet their Paris COP21 pledges and manage increasing climate
    impacts.
  13. Saudi Arabia and Egypt on 8 April 2016 agreed to build a bridge over the
    Red Sea. The announced bridge will connect the two countries.
  14. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly will
    write a memoir titled Endurance: My Year in Space and Our Journey to Mars, as
    announced on 6 April 2016. The book will be published by Alfred A. Knopf.


Finance/Banking –
NPCI launches next generation online payments solution

  • NPCI on Monday launched next
    generation online payments solution – Unified Payments Interface (UPI) which
    will leverage trends such as increasing smartphone adoption and deeper
    penetration of mobile data.
  • UPI is a channel that powers
    multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application (of any bank) of a
    participating bank, merging several banking features, seamless fund routing and
    merchant payments into one hood.
  • It will empower users to perform
    instant push and pull transactions and transform the way people make payments
    today.
  • UPI was today launched by Reserve
    Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan along with Nandan Nilekani, advisor to NPCI.
  • Hota said a few banks have gone
    live with UPI out of 29 and other banks will join this year.
  • UPI facilitates ‘virtual address’
    as a payment identifier for sending and collecting money and works on single
    click 2 factor authentication.

Airtel’s M-commerce subsidiary gets payments bank licence

  • Country’s largest service
    provider Bharti Airtel today said its mobile commerce subsidiary, Airtel M
    Commerce Services, had received payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank of
    India.
  • In August last year, RBI had
    given in-principle to the company, which operates under brand name of Airtel
    Money, along with 10 others, including Reliance Industries, Aditya Birla Nuvo,
    Vodafone m-pesa, Department of Posts, for payments bank.
  • In February this year, Kotak
    Mahindra Bank signed an agreement to pick 19.9 per cent stake for Rs 98.38
    crore in Airtel M Commerce Services.
  • The companies, which received
    in-principle approval from RBI in August, will have to make their banks
    operational by March 2017.
  • Through Airtel Money, the company
    offers ticketing, mobile and DTH recharges, utility bill payments, online
    shopping, money transfer services. It also has business correspondent tie-up
    with Axis Bank and provides business to business payment collection services at
    present.

Union Government exempted housing finance companies from XBRL filings

  • XBRL filing was in news on 11
    April 2016 as the Union Corporate Affair Ministry exempted the housing finance
    companies from it. For this, the ministry amended the Companies (Filing of
    Documents and Forms in Extensible Business Reporting Language) Rules.
  • The sectors which were already
    exempted from this kind of filings include Banking, insurance, power sector and
    non-banking finance companies.
  • XBRL or Extensible Business
    Reporting Language, provides a common, electronic format for business
    reporting.
  • It is a data-rich dialect of XML
    (Extensible Markup Language), the universally preferred language for
    transmitting information via the Internet.

North East-ASEAN Business Summit concluded in Imphal

  • The first-ever three-day North
    East-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Business Summit concluded
    at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, Manipur. It was held from 7 April to 9
    April 2016.
  • It was organised with an aim to
    attract investment from both domestic and foreign firms to the North-East
    states of India. It also tried to increase productivity and generate employment
    in the region.
  • Bangladesh Commerce Minister
    Tofail Ahmed was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the Summit while
    Manipur Speaker Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh presided over the function.

Mother Teresa conferred with Founders Award posthumously in UK

  • Mother Teresa was posthumously
    conferred with the UK’s prestigious Founders Award 2016.The award is given to
    recognise and reward exemplary achievements of people within the global Asian
    community.
  • Teresa’s only living relative,
    her 72-year old niece, Agi Bojazhiu received the award on 8 April 2016.
  • Business Leader of the Year
    award: Prakash Lohia, Chairman and co-founder of Indorama Corporation.
  • Outstanding achievement in
    Television’ award: Kunal Nayyar, actor from the hit American comedy series The
    Big Bang Theory.
  • Outstanding Achievement in Cinema
    award: Asif Kapadia, he is Oscar and BAFT-winning documentary-maker

Priyadarshini Chatterjee crowned FBB Miss India World 2016

  • Delhi-based Priyadarshini
    Chatterjee on 9 April 2016 was announced the winner of the FBB Femina Miss
    India World 2016 at the 53rd edition of the Femina Miss India beauty pageant held
    in Mumbai. She was crowned the title by Aditi Arya, Femina Miss India 2015.
  • Bangalore girl Sushruthi Krishna
    emerged as the Femina Miss India Supranational 2016 and Lucknow girl Pankhuri
    Gidwani was crowned the Femina Miss India Grand International 2016.
  • Chatterjee will now represent
    India at the Miss World 2016 pageant, Krishna will participate at Miss
    International 2016, while Gidwani will take part at the Miss Grand
    International beauty pageants.

Khadija Ismayilova to receive UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom
Prize 2016

  • Investigative journalist Khadija
    Ismayilova of Azerbaijan on 8 April 2016 was chosen for the UNESCO or Guillermo
    Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2016.
  • The Prize will be awarded during
    the celebration of World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2016 hosted by Finland.
  • An independent international jury
    of media professionals recommended Ismayilova in recognition of her outstanding
    contribution to press freedom in difficult circumstances.

India –
Union Government approved country’s first Metrino Pod Taxi project for
Gurgaon

  • The Union Government on 8 April
    2016 approved country’s first Metrino Pod project for Gurgaon, for which the
    state government would not have to pay anything. The work on this project would
    start by 1 June 2016.
  • Haryana Public Works (Building
    and Roads) Minister, Rao Narbir Singh said that the National Highway Authority
    of India has also submitted the feasibility report for this Metrino Pod taxi
    project. The fare of Metrino Pod taxi would be similar to that of the Metro.
  • The pilot project will span a
    13km stretch from the Gurgaon-Delhi border to Badshapur Mod on Sohna Road and
    is estimated to cost 850 crore rupees.

Sajibu Cheiraoba celebrated with religious fervor in Manipur
  • Sajibu Cheiraoba, a traditional
    festival that marks New Year of the Meiteis (majority ethnic group) of Manipur,
    was celebrated on 8 April 2016. It was celebrated with cultural gusto and
    religious fervor in Manipur.
  • Sajibu Cheiraoba is celebrated
    annually on the first day of Sajibu month (first lunar day of the lunar month
    Sajibu (March/April)). On this day, people arrange a joint family feast in
    which traditional cuisines are offered to local deities at the entrance gates
    of the houses.
  • After meals, people start climb
    the Cheiraoching located in Chingmeirong or tops of nearby hills in the
    afternoon to offer prayers. As per belief they think that it would elevate them
    to greater heights in their worldly life.

Sports –
Lee Chong Wei defeated Chen Long to win Malaysian Open 2016
  • Lee Chong Wei on 10 April 2016
    won the men’s singles title at the Malaysia Open 2016 held at the Malawati
    Stadium in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
  • The world No. 4 grabbed the title
    by defeating China’s world No. 1 Chen Long a 21-13, 21-8 in just 42 minutes.
  • The title is Chong Wei’s 11th
    Malaysia Open crown after having won in 2004, 2005, 2006 and consecutively from
    2008-2014.

Danny Willett won 2016 US Masters golf championship
  • Danny Willett on 10 April 2016
    won the US Masters, the first Briton to do so since Nick Faldo in 1996. Willett
    grabbed the title after defeating defending champion Jordan Spieth.
  • Willett won his first major
    championship with a score of 283 (–5), three strokes ahead of runners-up Lee
    Westwood and Jordan Spieth. Spieth led the tournament from the first round
    until the 12th hole of the final round, where he made a quadruple-bogey

Anthony Joshua won International Boxing Federation title

  • Anthony Joshua on 9 April 2016
    won the International Boxing Federation heavyweight title. He knocked out
    Charles Martin in the second round at the O2 Arena in London.
  • Joshua, the 2012 Olympic gold
    medallist, captured his first world title in only his 16th professional fight.

Japan’s shuttler Kento Momota axed from Rio Olympics over illegal
gambling
  • World number two shuttler Kento
    Momota of Japan was axed from Japan’s badminton team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
    He was axed for gambling at an illegal casino.
  • The Nippon Badminton Association
    banned 21-year-old Momota from competition indefinitely, after an emergency
    meeting to decide the player’s fate.
  • Momota became the first Japanese
    man to win a world championship medal with a bronze in Jakarta in August 2015
    and had been tipped to challenge for the title in Rio Olympics. Momota’s
    absence in Rio will be a major blow to Japan’s medal hopes.

FIFA released Coca-Cola World Rankings 2016
  • Federation Internationale de
    Football Association (FIFA) on 7 April 2016 released the April 2016 edition of
    the FIFA or Coca-Cola World Ranking.
  • A total of 171 games were taken
    into account for the Ranking which includes 51 qualifiers for Russia 2018 and
    60 continental qualifiers and 60 international friendlies.
  • Argentina Men’s Soccer team stood
    at world number one, pushing back the Belgium team to second position.  This is the first time since November that
    Belgium have lost top spot after taking it from the South American side in
    November 2015.
  • Meanwhile, India lost their last
    two World Cup qualifiers against Iran and Turkmenistan and dropped down to 162.

World –
World Bank Group adopted Climate Change Action Plan
  • The World Bank Group (WBG) on 7
    April 2016 adopted the Climate Change Action Plan. The plan was designed to
    help countries meet their Paris COP21 pledges and manage increasing climate
    impacts.
  • It sets targets for 2020 in
    high-impact areas, including clean energy, green transport, climate-smart
    agriculture, and urban resilience.
  • The climate-related share of
    WBG’s portfolio will be increased from 21 to 28 percent by 2020 in response to
    client demand, with total financing of potentially 29 billion US dollars per
    year by 2020.
  • The bank will support countries
    in translating their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) into climate
    policies and investment plans into actions and in mainstreaming climate
    considerations into policies and budgets.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt to build bridge across Red Sea

  • Saudi Arabia and Egypt on 8 April
    2016 agreed to build a bridge over the Red Sea. The announced bridge will
    connect the two countries.
  • The planned bridge would help in
    boosting commerce between the two allied countries. It will also connect the
    two continents, Africa and Asia, and result in increasing trade between the two
    continents to unprecedented levels.
  • The announcement was made by
    Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz after meeting Egyptian President
    Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi at the President’s Ittahidiya Palace. King Salman,
    80-year-old monarch, is on a five-day long visit to Egypt.

Scott Kelly to write memoir titled Endurance: My Year in Space and Our
Journey to Mars
  • NASA astronaut Scott Kelly will
    write a memoir titled Endurance: My Year in Space and Our Journey to Mars, as
    announced on 6 April 2016. The book will be published by Alfred A. Knopf.
  • Scott returned to Earth in March
    2016 after spending almost a year aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
  • The memoir will offer a glimpse
    of Scott’s journey to space and his life aboard the ISS. He will also recount
    the obstacles he encountered along the way, his early struggles in school, his
    training as a Navy test pilot, and the work required to become an astronaut and
    live in space for one year.

Obituaries –
C Silvera, former Member of Parliament, died
  • Former Union Minister and
    Congress leader C Silvera died on 9 April 2016 in Tuikhuahtlang, Aizawl
    district of Mizoram. He died of heart failure. He was 81.
  • He was the longest serving member
    of Parliament from the Mizoram (Lok Sabha constituency).
  • He was the first and so far the
    only Mizo to be in the union council of ministers.
