  1. Sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) worth Rs 5,400 crore have been issued in
    eight tranches till date, the Reserve Bank of India
    said today.  Investors in these bonds, launched in November
    2015, have been provided with the option of holding them in physical or
    dematerialised form.
  2. Siemens Industry Software
    India Pvt. Ltd., today said it has
    signed an MoU with the Karnataka Government Tool Room and Training
    Center and DesignTech Systems Limited to establish four Centers of Excellence
    across the state.  According to the state
    government, the total cost of the project is Rs 2031.80 crore, out of which Siemens Industry Software, India
    contributes Rs 1822.48 crore and Government of Karnataka’s share is Rs 219.32
    crore.
  3. The Supreme Court (SC) on 9 June
    2017 upheld the newly-inserted provision in the Income Tax Act, 1961 mandating linking of Aadhaar number with Permanent
    Account Number (PAN),
    but it partially stayed its operation.
  4. To usher in transformation in the
    education and healthcare sectors along with State governments, NITI Aayog has
    launched the SATH (Sustainable Action
    for Transforming Human capital) programme
    .
  5. The Memorandum of Understanding
    (MoU) was signed by Lok Sabha speaker
    Sumitra Mahajan
    and Speaker of
    National Assembly of Mauritius Santi Bai Hanoomanjee
    after their meeting in
    Port Louis.
  6. India and the United Nations
    Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC
    ) on 8 June 2017 launched a
    partnership fund to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the
    developing world.
  7. The Union Ministry of Law and
    Justice has cleared the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment)
    Bill 2017, legalising Kambala, a
    traditional race involving buffaloes.
  8. The Minister of State for AYUSH
    (Independent Charge), Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the second National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga
    on 9 June 2017 at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. The theme of this
    year’s conference is “Yoga for Health and Harmony”.
  9. India’s Rohan Bopanna and his
    Canadian teammate Gabriela Dabrowski
    on 8 June 2017 won the mixed doubles
    title at the 2017 French Open of Tennis
    . In the finals played at
    Philippe-Chatrier Court of Paris, France, the Indo-Canadian pair defeated the
    pair of Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Colombia’s Robert Farah by 2-6, 6-2,
    12-10.
  10. Legendary off-spinner Muttiah Muralidaran was on 8 June 2017 inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall
    of Fame by ICC Chief Executive David Richardson after the India versus Sri
    Lanka ICC Champions Trophy match at The Oval.
  11. Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli is the sole Indian sportsperson to feature in the 2017 Forbes
    list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’. Kohli has been ranked 89th among the 100 top-earning
    athletes with a total pay of $22 million that includes $3 million from salary
    and winnings and another $19 million from endorsements.
  12. Polish poet and author Adam Zagajewski on 8 June 2017 won the Spain’s prestigious Princess of
    Asturias Award for Literature 2017.

Sovereign gold bonds worth Rs 5,400 crore issued so far: RBI

  • Sovereign gold bonds (SGBs) worth
    Rs 5,400 crore have been issued in eight tranches till date, the Reserve Bank
    of India said today.
  • Investors in these bonds,
    launched in November 2015, have been provided with the option of holding them
    in physical or dematerialised form.
  • “The Reserve Bank of India,
    in consultation with the Government of India, has issued eight tranches of
    sovereign gold bonds for a total value of Rs 5,400 crore till date,” the
    central bank said in a statement.
  • Against the target of raising Rs
    15,000 crore through issue of gold bonds in the first year alone, the proceeds
    in 19 months total up to only Rs 5,400 crore.
  • The bonds are government
    securities denominated in grams of gold. The bond is issued by Reserve Bank on
    behalf of the government.
  • The government had come out with
    the scheme to discourage public from holding gold in physical form.
  • The government had launched the
    first tranche of sovereign gold bond scheme in November 2015 for which it got
    subscription for 915.95 kg of gold worth Rs 246 crore.
  • Under the scheme, the bonds are
    denominated in units of one gram of gold and multiples thereof. Minimum
    investment in the bonds is one gram with a maximum limit of subscription of 500
    grams per person per fiscal year (April-March).
  • The bonds issued under the eighth
    tranche had a maturity period of eight years.
Siemens signs MoU with Karnataka government for Rs 2031.80 crore
project

  • Siemens Industry Software India
    Pvt. Ltd., today said it has signed an MoU with the Karnataka Government Tool
    Room and Training Center and DesignTech Systems Limited to establish four
    Centers of Excellence across the state.
  • According to the state
    government, the total cost of the project is Rs 2031.80 crore, out of which
    Siemens Industry Software, India contributes Rs 1822.48 crore and Government of

  • The partnership paves the way for
    a world-class integrated skill development infrastructure and benchmarked
    technical education curriculum with core focus on Industry 4.0 Automation,
    Mechatronics and Internet of Things (IOT) infrastructure, the company said in a
    release.
  • The four COEs will address
    diverse industry segments like Automotive, Industrial machinery, Industrial
    automation, Renewable Energy and Aerospace and Defence, it said.
SC partially stays linking of PAN with Aadhaar

  • The Supreme Court (SC) on 9 June
    2017 upheld the newly-inserted provision in the Income Tax Act, 1961 mandating
    linking of Aadhaar number with Permanent Account Number (PAN), but it partially
    stayed its operation.
  • A Bench of Justices AK Sikri and
    Ashok Bhushan pronounced this ruling while hearing two petitions challenging
    Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
  • The lead petition was filed by
    CPI leader Binoy Viswam while the second petition was filed by SG Vombatkere, a
    retired Indian Army Officer and Bezwada Wilson, founder and convenor of Safai
    Karmachari Andolan.

Raj Sahakar personal accident insurance scheme: 700,000 Rajasthan
farmers to pay just Rs 27 for Rs 6 lakh insurance cover

  • Nearly 700,000 farmers who have
    availed crop loan through cooperative banks in Rajasthan will get an insurance
    cover of Rs 6 lakh by shelling out only Rs 27 as yearly premium.
  • The Rajasthan government has
    raised the insurance amount by one lakh in the present fiscal year under the
    “Raj Sahakar personal accident insurance scheme” , targeted to cover
    more than 2.5 million farmers, a state minister said.
  • Last year, the insurance amount
    was Rs 5 lakh and 2.3 million farmers were covered.
  • “Rajasthan is the first
    state in the country which is providing high insurance cover in very nominal
    premium. We target to cover more than 2.5 million farmers with the scheme this
    financial year,” Cooperative minister of Rajasthan Ajay Singh Kilak said
    today.
  • While the farmer will give Rs 27,
    Central Cooperative Bank, the Rajasthan State Cooperative Bank will give Rs
    13.50 each as the premium to the insurance company.

NITI Aayog launches SATH programme

  • To usher in transformation in the
    education and healthcare sectors along with State governments, NITI Aayog has
    launched the SATH (Sustainable Action for Transforming Human capital)
    programme.
  • “NITI will work in close
    collaboration with the State machinery by building three future ‘role-model’
    States for health systems,” an official statement said.
  • NITI Aayog invited all States and
    Union Territories for the three-stage selection process out of which 16
    responded. Five States were shortlisted post project presentation by 14 States.
    Subsequently, three States will be selected through further assessments.
  • SATH programme will be
    implemented by NITI Aayog along with global consultancy McKinsey & Company
    and IPE Global consortium in the three selected States after the signing of
    MoUs.
India, Mauritius sign MoU to institutionalise cooperation between both
Parliaments

  • The Memorandum of Understanding
    (MoU) was signed by Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Speaker of National
    Assembly of Mauritius Santi Bai Hanoomanjee after their meeting in Port Louis.
  • Mahajan, who is leading an Indian
    parliamentary delegation to Mauritius, said there is a lot to be learnt by
    sharing the best practices and experiences as parliamentary democracies.
  • In this regard, she said the MoU
    on joint framework for parliamentary support and capacity building is a
    “visionary step forward”, according to a statement issued by the Lok
    Sabha secretariat.
  • She said the Parliament of India
    accords great importance to the steady development of parliamentary relations
    between the two countries.
  • Mahajan said the relations
    between the two countries are based on centuries of cultural, linguistic,
    social and spiritual links that transcend extraneous considerations.
India, UNOSSC launch partnership fund to promote Sustainable
Development Goals

  • India and the United Nations
    Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) on 8 June 2017 launched a
    partnership fund to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the
    developing world.
  • The fund was launched on the
    occasion of the World Oceans Day at a special ceremony held at the Permanent
    Mission of India to the UN.
  • The India-UN Development
    Partnership Fund will implement country-level projects that are catalytic
    towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
  • The initiative is aimed at
    reducing poverty and hunger, improving health, education and equality, and
    expanding access to clean water, energy and livelihoods.
  • The fund will focus on Least
    Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Centre clears Kambala Bill, legalising the Buffalo race

  • The Union Ministry of Law and
    Justice has cleared the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment)
    Bill 2017, legalising Kambala, a traditional race involving buffaloes.
  • The bill will now be sent to the
    President for his assent, after which it would become a law. Prime Minister
    Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party have been in huge favour of sports
    such as Kambala that have a strong link with the local culture.
  • In November 2016, the Karnataka
    high court banned kambala (annual buffalo race) along with bull-cart race in
    the state while hearing a case filed by the People for the Ethical Treatment of
    Animals (PETA) citing animal cruelty.
  • The high court had stayed these
    traditional sports in view of the Supreme Court’s ban on jallikattu, a
    traditional bull taming sport of Tamil Nadu.
Ministry of AYUSH inaugurates 2nd National Health Editors’ Conference
on Yoga

  • The Minister of State for AYUSH
    (Independent Charge), Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the second National Health
    Editors’ Conference on Yoga on 9 June 2017 at the National Media Centre in New
    Delhi.
  • The conference is being organized
    by the Ministry of AYUSH in association with Press Information Bureau (PIB),
    Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Central Council for Research in
    Yoga and Naturopathy (M/o AYUSH) as a part of celebrations of the 3rd
    International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2017.
  • The theme of this year’s conference
    is “Yoga for Health and Harmony”.
  • The main aim of the conference is
    to give insight to the journalists about the scientific aspects of yoga and its
    health benefits.
  • The event is expected to witness
    participation from over 150 Health editors and media persons from National,
    Regional and International media organizations.
  • Senior officers of PIB and
    Ministry of AYUSH will also be present on the occasion.
  • Eminent experts of yoga and
    modern medicine will be presenting highlights from recent research works on
    aspects of yoga.

Bopanna-Dabrowski win mixed doubles title in French Open 2017

  • India’s Rohan Bopanna and his
    Canadian teammate Gabriela Dabrowski on 8 June 2017 won the mixed doubles title
    at the 2017 French Open of Tennis. In the finals played at Philippe-Chatrier
    Court of Paris, France, the Indo-Canadian pair defeated the pair of Germany’s
    Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Colombia’s Robert Farah by 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.
  • This was their maiden French Open
    mixed doubles title for this Indo-Canadian pair of Bopanna and Dabrowski.
  • Bopanna and his Canadian partner
    shocked third seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 6-3 in
    the semi-finals.
  • This is only the second time in
    his career that Bopanna has reached the summit clash of a Grand Slam. In 2010,
    he had made the final of US Open with Pakistani parter Aisam-ul-Haq-Qureshi and
    lost to legendary Bryan brothers — Bob and Mike.
  • In Men’s Singles, Rafael Nadal
    has reached the semi-finals while Novak Djokovic has been ousted in the
    quarter-final after losing to Dominic Thiem.
Muttiah Muralidaran inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

  • Legendary off-spinner Muttiah
    Muralidaran was on 8 June 2017 inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame by
    ICC Chief Executive David Richardson after the India versus Sri Lanka ICC Champions
    Trophy match at The Oval.
  • With this, Muralidaran became the
    first Sri Lankan to be inducted into the prestigious list. He is the 83rd
    player overall to be formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
  • He was awarded the honour along
    with Arthur Morris, George Lohmann and Karen Rolton by fellow ICC Cricket Hall
    of Famers.

Virat Kohli sole Indian in Forbes list of highest paid athletes

  • Indian cricket captain Virat
    Kohli is the sole Indian sportsperson to feature in the 2017 Forbes list of
    ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’.
  • Kohli has been ranked 89th among
    the 100 top-earning athletes with a total pay of $22 million that includes $3
    million from salary and winnings and another $19 million from endorsements.
  • Forbes has described the Kohli as
    the ‘Indian cricket phenom’ and said that the sports star has ‘for good reason’
    already drawn comparisons to all-time great Sachin Tendulkar. It also added
    that Kohli has continuously shattered batting records and in 2015 was named the
    captain of the Indian national team, making him one of the youngest players to
    ever hold the job.
  • It also noted that last year
    Kohli made nearly $1 million in salary and match fees from his national team
    play and he’s also among the Indian Premier League’s highest-paid players with
    $2.3 million salary from the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
  • “The vast majority of his income,
    however, comes from one of the sports world’s most impressive sponsorships
    portfolios,” stated Forbes.
  • Right at the top of the list is
    Soccer star Christiano Ronaldo with a total pay of 93 million dollars.
  • American basketball star LeBron
    James comes in at the 2nd spot with $86.2 million, followed by Argentine
    footballer Lionel Messi at the 3rd spot with 80 million, tennis star Roger
    Federer at 4th spot with 64 million and American basketball player Kevin Durant
    at the 5th with 60 million.
  • The list of top-earning 100 stars
    is however, male dominated, as it has only one woman sports star.
Tennis star Serena Williams, who
comes in at the 51 spot with $27 million, is the sole female athlete to make
the cut this year.

Polish poet Adam Zagajewski wins Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for
Literature

  • Polish poet and author Adam
    Zagajewski on 8 June 2017 won the Spain’s prestigious Princess of Asturias
    Award for Literature 2017.
  • He was awarded for his resolute
    stance in defence of freedom and the search for beauty, works of great human
    depth and fine aesthetic sensibility.
  • Zagajewski is one of the most
    pre-eminent contemporary Polish poets, novelists and essayists from the so-called
    ‘Generation of New Wave’.
Obituaries
Veteran Congress leader, P Govardhan Reddy passes away

  • Veteran Congress leader and Rajya
    Sabha MP, Palvai Govardhan Reddy passed away on 9 June 2017 after suffering a
    cardiac arrest. He was 80.
  • Govardhan Reddy is reported to
    have suffered the attack early in the morning, while he was on his way to
    Manali to attend a parliamentary standing committee meeting. He was immediately
    rushed to a government hospital in Shimla, where he is reported to have passed
    away. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
  • Telangana Chief Minister K
    Chandrasekhar Rao expressed his shock and grief over the Congress leader’s
    sudden demise. Rao also directed Chief Secretary SP Singh and Resident
    Commissioner Arvind Kumar to make arrangements to bring Reddy’s mortal remains
    back to Hyderabad from Kulu.
Ex-UN General Assembly President Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann passed away

  • Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann, former
    Foreign Minister of Nicaragua and former President of the UN General Assembly,
    passed away on 8 June 2017. He was 84.
  • He was born in the United States
    to a Nicaraguan diplomat who served in the administration of dictator Anastasio
    Somoza Garcia.
  • In 2007, he was sent to New York
    as a Nicaragua’s representative before the United Nations.
  • He served as the UN General Assembly
    President in 2008 and 2009.
Eminent social rights activist Mehrunnisa Dalwai no more

  • Mehrunnisa Dalwai, eminent social
    activist, author and wife of the late thinker and Marathi writer Hamid Dalwai
    passed away at her residence on 8 June 2017. She was 87.
  • Mehrunnisa worked for justice and
    equal rights for Muslim women and spearheaded a march in Mumbai seeking
    abolition of triple ‘talaq’. She also founded Islamic Research Institute and
    Maharashtra Talaq Mukti Morcha.
