Foxconn signs pact
with Maharashtra Govt to invest $5 bn over next five years

  • Global electronic manufacturing giant Foxconn today
    announced it will invest $five billion over the next five years in Maharashtra,
    which has given the Taiwan-based company 1,500 acres of land for its plant.
  • Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou said the facility in Maharashtra
    will focus on research and development as well as manufacturing, and the
    company has chosen the state for being a financial centre, availability of
    quality talent and software-hardware integration facilities.
  • Foxconn will look for tie-ups with local partners for its
    presence in this state, Gou said, while adding that this MoU with the
    Maharashtra Government was different from the already announced joint venture
    with the Adani Group.
  • At an event organised to announce the investment and a memorandum
    of understanding in this regard between the company and the State Government,
    Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Foxconn will be given 1,500
    acres of land.
  • Foxconn will create direct employment of 50,000 people
    through this MoU, Fadnavis said.

Coal India to invest
over Rs.62,500 cr by 2019-20
  • Coal India Ltd. (CIL), the largest producer of the fuel in
    the country, will invest over Rs.62,500 crore in the next five years with an
    aim to ramp up annual production to 908 million tonnes by 2019-2020, the
    government has said.
  • The State-run miner in 2014-15 had produced 494 million
    tonnes of coal. Even though this was three per cent lower that the targeted 507
    million tonnes, the production registered an incremental growth of record 32
    million tonnes, as compared with cumulative growth of 31 million tonnes in the
    four year period from 2010 to 2014.
  • Additionally, in the first quarter (April-June) of the
    current fiscal, CIL registered a growth of 12.3 per cent in production at 121
    million tonnes — the highest growth for any quarter in the history of the
    company. This, Coal Secretary Anil Swarup said, was mainly on the back of
    speedy environmental clearances and other policies of the Modi-Government.

Ram Nath Kovind,
Acharya Dev Vrat appointed Bihar, HP Governors

  • Senior BJP leader Ram Nath Kovind and Acharya Dev Vrat were
    on Saturday appointed as Governors of poll-bound Bihar and Himachal Pradesh
    respectively.
  • The 69-year-old Mr. Kovind, who had been a two-time Rajya
    Sabha member between 1994 and 2006, hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
  • His appointment comes barely few months ahead of the
    Assembly elections due in Bihar. West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi was
    holding additional charge of Bihar.
  • A lawyer by profession, Mr. Kovind had also been BJP
    Scheduled Caste Morcha chief.
  • The appointments will take effect from the dates the
    incumbents assume charge of their respective offices, it said.
  • Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh was holding the additional
    charge of Himachal Pradesh.

Accenture appointed
Rekha Menon as Chairperson of India’s operation

  • Rekha M Menon on 7 August 2015 was appointed as the
    chairperson of Accenture India. She will take the charge of the company from 21
    August 2015.
  • Rekha replaced Avinash Vashista who was both Chairman and
    Managing Director of Accenture India, since 2011.
  • She has been associated with the US-based global software
    major as Managing Director, Human Resources and was driving Accenture’s human
    capital strategy for Asia-Pacific, West Asia, Africa, Russia, Turkey and Latin
    America.
  • Besides, the 30 billion US dollars outsourcing firm also
    appointed Anindya Basu as Managing Director of Accenture India who will take
    the charge from 21 August 2015.

Sports
Michael Clarke
announces retirement from International Cricket

  • Australia captain Michael Clarke will retire from
    international cricket at the end of the current Ashes series.
  • The 34-year-old saw his team surrender the Ashes after
    losing to England by an innings and 78 runs at Trent Bridge.
  • He averages only 16 from eight innings and Australia are 3-1
    behind with one match left at The Oval on 20 August.
  • Clarke made his Test debut in October 2004 and he has played
    114 matches, scoring 8,628 runs at an average of 49.30.
  • This summer’s Ashes defeat is the fourth he has endured
    playing in England.
  • He took over the Australia captaincy from Ricky Ponting in
    March 2011 and has presided over 46 matches, winning 23 and losing 16.

BCCI forms ad-hoc
panels for Bihar and Uttarakhand
  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday
    formed an ad-hoc committee for cricket administration in the states of Bihar
    and Uttarakhand.
  • The committee formed to look after cricket affairs in Bihar
    will be spearheaded by its chairman Niranjan Shah and will also include Vinod
    Phadke (secretary, Goa Cricket Association), Sourav Dasgupta (secretary,
    Tripura Cricket Association), Bharat Zaveri (executive member, Gujarat Cricket
    Association) and Ratnakar Shetty (general manager — Game Development, BCCI).
  • The panel for Uttarakhand will be chaired by M.P. Pandove
    and will also have Vishal Marwaha (secretary, Himachal Pradesh Cricket
    Association), Subir Ganguly (joint secretary, Cricket Association of Bengal),
    Vinod Shah (vice-president, Maharashtra Cricket Association), K.V.P. Rao
    (manager — Game Development, BCCI).

India
National ‘Kala Utsav’
to be held in Delhi in Dec
  • Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani today announced that the
    national-level Kala Utsav for students studying in CBSE schools would be held in
    Delhi in December every year.
  • Addressing a campaign function here on various insurance and
    financial security initiatives of the NDA Government, Irani said Kala Utsav, on
    the lines of Kerala state school youth festival, would be held at Siri Fort
    Auditorium in the national capital.
  • It was a long pending demand of CBSE students to have a Kala
    Utsav at the national level.

Tendong Lho Rum Faat,
annual festival of ethnic Lepcha tribe of Sikkim celebrated

  • Tendong Lho Rum Faat (Prayer of the Tendong Mountain), an
    ancient and natural festival of the ethnic Lepcha tribe of Sikkim was
    celebrated with traditional devotion and fanfare on 9 August 2015. It is an annual
    festival celebrated in the month of July-August.
  • On this day, the tribe worships the Mount Tendong, which,
    according to the folklore, is the saviour for them. The Lepchas, said to be the
    aboriginals of the State, are worshippers of nature.
