  1. India and Australia on
    Monday signed six memorandums of

    the two countries. The signed agreements include Defence Cooperation Framework
    and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
  5. Mukta Dutta Tomar was on 7 April 2017 appointed as India’s
    Ambassador to Federal Republic of Germany. She is expected to take up the
    assignment shortly.
  6. Indian-origin Anuja Ravindra Dhir on 9 April 2017 became the first non-white judge of
    the Old Bailey Court of London. She is also the youngest circuit judge
    currently to sit at the court.
  7. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) 2017 was released
    on 5 April 2017 by the World Economic Forum (WEF). India was ranked 40th among the 136 economies across the world in
    the Index. The position of India has improved over 52nd rank in 2015 and 65th
    in 2013.
  8. The new BJP-led government in Manipur state has decided to hold People’s Day on the 15th of every month.
  9. Sir Tim Berners-Lee in the first week of in April 2017 was honoured
    with the 2016 ACM A M Turing Award. He is best known as the inventor of the
    World Wide Web.
  10. The youngest Nobel Peace Prize
    winner, Malala Yousafzai will be appointed as the youngest United Nations Messenger
    of Peace on 10 April 2017.

India, Australia ink 6 pacts at bilateral talks; to boost
counter-terrorism

  • India and Australia on Monday
    signed six memorandums of understanding (MoUs), including on cooperation in
    fighting international terrorism and on civil aviation security, following
    delegation-level bilateral talks headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his
    Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull here.
  • One MoU was signed on cooperation
    in fighting international terrorism and organised crime.
  • A second MoU was signed on
    promotion and development of cooperation in civil aviation security.
  • A third MoU was signed on
    cooperation in the field of environment, climate and wildlife.
  • Another MoU was signed on cooperation
    in the field of sports.
  • The Indian Space Research
    Organisation (ISRO) signed an MoU with Geoscience Australia on implementation
    arrangement on cooperation in earth observation and satellite navigation.
  • A sixth MoU was signed on
    cooperation in the field of health and medicine.
  • Following the exchange of
    agreements, Modi and Turnbull via video-conferencing jointly inaugurated the
    TERI-Deakin Nanobiotechology Centre (TDNBC) at TERI’s Green Campus in Gurugram,
    Haryana.
  • The Australian Prime Minister
    arrived here on Sunday on a four-day state visit to India.
  • This is Turnbull’s first
    bilateral visit to India since he assumed office in September 2015.
  • His predecessor Tony Abbott had
    visited India in September 2014 and this was followed by Prime Minister Modi’s
    visit to Australia in November that year.
ESAF Small Finance Bank launches social deposit scheme Hrudaya Deposit

  • ESAF Small Finance Bank has launched
    a social deposit scheme called Hrudaya Deposit at a function held in Thrissur.
  • The deposit scheme, as the name
    suggests, stands for a social cause, through which, ESAF Bank provides the
    customers an opportunity to be a part in social welfare projects, which none of
    the other banks has given so far, said K. Paul Thomas, Managing Director and
    CEO, ESAF Small Finance Bank.
  • The significance of the scheme is
    that a customer who deposit in it, becomes a part in nation building, as their
    deposits are used for the welfare and infrastructure development of the
    marginalized sections of the society, he said.
  • An individual or a legal entity
    can join the Hrudaya Deposit Scheme with a minimum deposit amount of ₹15 lakh and for a minimum period of two years. An account can
    be opened through internet banking or by calling the Relationship Manager. The
    compound interest will be given in every quarter as per the present rates. The
    customer will also have the opportunity to gain first hand experience of how
    their money is used to improve the lives of the ordinary people in the country.
Paytm Mall launches QR code feature

  • The Digital wallet company Paytm
    in April 2017 announced the launch of new feature QR code on its Paytm Mall
    application. This QR code will allow consumers to place online orders at
    physical stores.
  • With this launch, Paytm becomes
    the first company to invest in QR code-based payment solution. The company in a
    statement said that the move is aimed at smartphone users of non-metros cities
    who still do not shop online.
  • The first product to be marketed
    or sold via this feature of Paytm Mall is handsets of Samsung. Later, the
    company will bring all FMCG and consumer product firms on the board for the
    same purpose.
  • It will be beneficial for the
    partner retailers and merchants by enabling them to earn additional revenue in
    form of commission while eliminating the need for keeping the inventory.
  • As per reports, the seller will
    be able to earn a percentage margin on each purchase that is made by scanning
    the Paytm QR code. This margin will be based on the product and may vary from 3
    per cent to 20 per cent.
India and Bangladesh signed 22 agreements including defence and cyber
security

  • India and Bangladesh on 8 April
    2017 signed 22 agreements to boost the bilateral cooperation between the two
    countries. The signed agreements include Defence Cooperation Framework and
    Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
  • The agreements were inked after
    delegation level talks were held between the two nations in the Hyderabad
    House, New Delhi. The delegation level talks were held during Bangladeshi Prime
    Minister Sheikh Hasina’s four-day visit to India. She was in India from 7 April

Union government to revive 40-year-old North Koel Irrigation project

  • The Union government has decided
    to restart the North Koel Irrigation project that was thought of nearly 40
    years ago. The project will aim to address the water requirements in Bihar and
    Jharkhand.
  • The decision was announced by the
    Union Minister for Water Resources, Uma Bharti during the launch of management
    information system (MIS) that will monitor the projects undertaken under the
    Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKYS).
  • According to the Union Minister,
    the project after completion is expected to irrigate almost 1 lakh hectares of
    land in both the states combined. It is estimated to cost around Rs 1600 Cr.
  • The Minister further added by
    saying that from irrigation point of view Jharkhand is the most backward state
    and PM Narendra Modi has initiated the revival of the project to eradicate
    poverty and backwardness of the common people in the state.
  • According to K Vohra, one of the
    main commissioners of the Jharkhand project, out of the total cost, the Centre
    would be financing about Rs 1000 crore.

  • Mukta Dutta Tomar was on 7 April
    2017 appointed as India’s Ambassador to Federal Republic of Germany. She is
    expected to take up the assignment shortly.
  • Tomar succeeds Gurjit Singh who
    was holding the post till March 2017.

London Court
  • Indian-origin Anuja Ravindra Dhir
    on 9 April 2017 became the first non-white judge of the Old Bailey Court of
    London. She is also the youngest circuit judge currently to sit at the court.
  • The Old Bailey Court of London is
    the Central Criminal Court of London. It houses 15 judges including 10 men and
    five women.

Manipur govt to hold People’s Day on 15th of every month
  • The new BJP-led government in
    Manipur state has decided to hold People’s Day on the 15th of every month.
  • The announcement was made by the
    state’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh during a function held at Khwairamband
    Bazar in Manipur’s capital city, Imphal on 9 April 2017.
  • The CM in his address announced
    that the move will enable the common public of the state to get easy access to
    the state’s top elected leaders including himself and other Ministers,
    Commissioners, Secretaries, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police.
  • Through the establishment of the
    day, the public would be able to give suggestions and lodge complaints on
    public grievances on the 15th of every month. Formal official order confirming
    the same will be issued in the coming days.

Tim Berners-Lee wins 2016 ACM A M Turing Award

  • Sir Tim Berners-Lee in the first
    week of in April 2017 was honoured with the 2016 ACM A M Turing Award.
  • He is best known as the inventor
    of the World Wide Web.
  • Berners-Lee received the 2016
    Turing Award “for inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and
    the fundamental protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale”.
  • The computer scientist is one of
    the world’s most influential voices for online privacy and government
    transparency.

Malala to become youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace

  • The youngest Nobel Peace Prize
    winner, Malala Yousafzai will be appointed as the youngest United Nations Messenger
    of Peace on 10 April 2017.
  • The appointment would be carried
    out by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Yousafzai’s new
    role will include helping in the promotion of girl’s education across the
    world.
  • She has also been invited by
    Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau to address the country’s Parliament on 12 April
    2017, which will make her the youngest person to get the opportunity.
