India
PM Modi appoints
IIT-JEE topper Kruti Tiwari as brand ambassador of Digital India

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project Digital India
    now has a brand ambassador. Kruti Tiwari, a IIT-JEE topper from Indore was
    handpicked by the Prime Minister himself and she will be associated with the
    campaign for the next one year.
  • Kruti will be travelling extensively across the country
    spreading the message of Digital India.
  • On July 1, Modi launched the ambitious Digital India mission
    at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in the national capital. Addressing the
    gathering, which included the who’s who of India Inc, the Prime Minister said
    that the government initiative will ensure an investment of Rs 4.5 lakh crore
    and jobs for at least 18 lakh people.
  • As part of the initiative, the Prime Minister announced an
    array of products such as Bharat Net, Digital locker and National Scholarship
    Portal.
  • A Digital India book and Digital India policy document were
    also unveiled by the Prime Minister at the onset of the event at the Indira
    Gandhi indoor stadium.

PM leaves on 6-nation
visit, to attend BRICS, SCO summits

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today left on an eight-day
    visit to five Central Asian countries as also Russia, aiming to enhance
    strategic, economic and energy ties besides attending the summits of BRICS and
    the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • The Prime Minister’s visit will start with Uzbekistan from
    where he will go to Kazakhstan tomorrow. He will then travel to Russia on July
    8, before flying to Turkmenistan on July 10, Kyrgyzstan on July 11 and
    Tajikistan on July 12.
  • The SCO Summit, to be held in Ufa in Russia, may see India
    getting membership of the six-nation grouping comprising China, Russia,
    Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, which could be a major
    highlight of the visit. As of now, India has only observer status.
  • The Summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South
    Africa), the important economies across the world, will focus on discussions on
    enhancing cooperation in the economic field, including the possibility of trade
    in the local currency.
  • With the BRICS Development Bank already set up, the summit
    could look at the possibility of starting credit facilities in the local
    currency. The first head of the bank is Indian banker K V Kamath.

Uttar Pradesh first
to have vehicle tracking system
  • Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) has
    become the first State transport corporation to have a vehicle tracking system
    for inter-city buses, which has led to a reduction in accidents and deaths as
    drivers are wary of crossing the speed limits.
  • Mukesh K Meshram, Managing Director, said they now have a
    control centre wall where all buses and their speeds can be tracked.
  • In a passenger-friendly IT initiative, UPSRTC is also in
    talks with Delhi Transport Corporation and State transport undertakings in
    Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal to have a common bus travel card, apart from
    Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
  • This is to ensure that the smart cards used by UPSRTC
    passengers (issued by State Bank of India and ICICI Bank) become interoperable
    with these Metro rail systems and buses, said Meshram at a PHDCCI event here.
    UPSRTC has 9,600 buses and 51,000 employees, including on contract.

Bengaluru Ranks 12th
in List of World’s Top 20 Tech-Rich Cities

  • Bangalore has been ranked 12th in the list of top 20
    technology-rich cities in the world, according to a survey conducted by global
    property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL).
  • “Bangalore has helped India debut on the ‘City Momentum
    Index’ Top 20 list –- an annual survey carried out by JLL globally. Reinforcing
    the city’s status of being one of India’s premier technology centres, Bangalore
    figures at No. 12 in the Top 20 technology-rich cities globally,” JLL
    India Chairman and Country Head Anuj Puri said in a statement.
  • London, San Jose and Beijing are top three cities on the
    list.
  • Good economic growth, investments in infrastructure,
    presence of startups and significant supply of prime office space are some of
    the factors that contributed in Bangalore’s strong performance in the survey.
  • Puri said the economic as well as real estate momentum in
    Bangalore has gained pace as tech-industry majors line up to enter the market
    or expand in the city.

C-DOT launches solar
powered, long distance WiFi hotspots

  • As part of the ‘Digital India Week’, Centre for Development
    of Telematics (C-DOT) on Monday launched four new products including solar
    powered Wi-Fi and long distance Wi-Fi.
  • The solar powered Wi-Fi hotspots can be used for smart
    cities, rural schools or panchayats, extending broadband connectivity remote/
    unconnected places. It can also be used in ship to ship communications in deep
    seas.
  • Such technology can also be used for remote video
    surveillance and site monitoring, meteorological applications, sensor networks
    and disaster management networks, said C-DOT.
  • The state-of-the-art telecommunication technology developer
    that launched long-distance Wi-Fi, said such technology can be used for
    operator sharing, support to link redundancy in case of failure of one radio/
    link.
  • It has some benefits like dual power feed, ensuring
    reliability of system; uses power over Ethernet to save cost of running a
    separate power cable to terminal; uses spectrum sensing to choose from channel
    with minimum interference and encryption on per link basis.
  • Apart from these, C-DOT also launched Next Generation
    Network solution that will address the needs of the changing telecom scenario
    and would enable smooth transition from Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) to
    Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

India, Bangladesh
Launch Survey in Enclaves Over Nationality
  • India and Bangladesh today launched a joint survey to record
    the “choice of nationality” of 51,584 people in 162 enclaves in each
    other’s territories ahead of the July 31 integration of the land with the
    respective mainland under the historic Land Boundary Agreement (LBA).
  • Officials said 50 teams began the survey in 111 Indian
    enclaves in Bangladesh while 25 teams went inside India to carry out the
    identical task in 51 enclaves in India.
  • They are expected to complete the survey by July 23.
  • The launch of the survey comes exactly a month after the two
    neighbours sealed the landmark deal to settle the 41-year- old land boundary
    dispute through exchange of territories, removing a major irritant in bilateral
    ties.

Samsung to set up
Digital Academy
  • Korean electronics major Samsung is setting up a Digital
    Academy to train the youth in software development and testing tools. The
    mobile major, which launched a smart phone based on open source-based, will
    train the youth in the Tizen Operating System.
  • The company signed an agreement with the TASK (Telangana
    Academy for Skill and Knowledge) here on Monday in this regard. This pact is
    part of a few MoUs signed by the Telangana Government with different corporates
    and institutes as part of the Digital Telangana campaign held at Madhapur.

with CR Rao Inst for Cyber Security Academy
  • In another agreement, C R Rao Advanced Institute of
    Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS) would help the government
    to set up a Cyber Security Academy to create ‘Cyber Warriors’. The institute
    would train youth in various aspects of cyber security, opening up employment
    opportunities in private and public sectors.
  • Economist and former RBI Governor C Rangarajan said cyber
    security was very important and, if not guarded against well, cyber crimes
    could cause damage. “Besides securing the systems, we need to create strengths
    in early warning and abilities to counter the attacks. It is imperative for us
    to get ready,” he said.

Champagne vineyards
of France granted with World Heritage status by UNESCO
  • The Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars of France were
    on 5 July 2015 granted with the World Heritage Status by United Nations
    Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • The decision to grant the status was given during the 39th
    session of the World Heritage Committee held in Bonn, Germany. The Committee
    was chaired by Maria Bohmer, Minister of State at Germany’s Federal Foreign
    Office
  • The Champagne World Heritage status covered the places where
    sparkling wine was developed using a second fermentation method in the bottle
    from the beginning of the 17th century until its early industrialisation in the
    19th century.
  • Besides, another cultural site in France – The Climats,
    terroirs of Burgundy – was declared as World Heritage Site.

UNESCO and UNITAR
signed agreement to protect cultural heritage with geo-spatial technologies
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
    Organization (UNESCO) and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)
    on 1 July 2015 signed an agreement to protect cultural heritage sites with the
    latest geo-spatial technologies.
  • The agreement was signed at the annual meeting of the World
    Heritage Committee in Bonn, Germany.

Features of the
Agreement
  • It is part of the UNESCO’s Unite for Heritage framework
    under which UNESCO enters into agreements with sister UN Agencies to protect
    cultural heritage sites across the world.
  • It will enable both the organizations to work together
    during conflict situations and following natural disasters by sharing their
    respective expertise and collaborating on prevention and capacity development.

Greek Finance
Minister Yanis Varoufakis resigns

  • Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, whose forceful
    denunciations of creditors alienated many of his euro zone colleagues, resigned
    on Monday, saying Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras believed it would help smooth
    the path to a new aid deal.
  • His resignation comes after Greeks delivered a resounding
    ‘No’ to the conditions of a rescue package with international creditors.
  • In a statement, Mr. Varoufakis said he had been “made
    aware” that some members of the euro zone considered him unwelcome at
    meetings of Finance Ministers, “an idea the Prime Minister judged to be
    potentially helpful to him in reaching an agreement”.

World Bank released
revised classification of world’s economies based on Gross National Income

  • The World Bank on 1 July 2015 released the annual revised
    classification of the world’s economies based on estimates of gross national
    income (GNI) per capita for 2014. The GNI calculations are based on World Bank
    Atlas method.
  • The revision in the classification was done on the basis of
    the 2015 edition of World Development Indicators (WDI) report released on 15
    April 2015 by the bank.
  • Bangladesh, Kenya, Myanmar and Tajikistan moved from the low
    income group to the lower-middle income group.
  • Maldives and Mongolia were the highest movers in the rankings
    – up 13 and 8 places, respectively.
  • Though India’s average per capital GNI reached 1610 US
    dollars or around 101430 rupees, it continues to be in the lower middle income
    category.
  • With the addition of one trillion US dollars during the past
    seven years, India’s GDP reached 2 trillion US dollar mark in 2014. In 2013 it
    was 1.861 trillion US dollars.

USA defeated Japan to
win Women’s FIFA World Cup for the third time

  • United States of America (USA) on  July 2015 won the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In
    the final played at Vancouver, Canada, US defeated Japan, 5-2.
  • This was third world cup title for the USA and first since
    1999.
  • In the semi-finals, while US defeated Germany, 2-0, Japan
    beat England, 2-1.
  • The player of the match was Carli Lloyd of US.

India won 2015 South
Asian Basketball Championship

  • India on 5 July 2015 won the South Asian Basketball (SABA)
    Championship title. In the final played at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru,
    Karanataka, India defeated Sri Lanka 93-44.
  • It was 4th edition of the championships. India was the
    winner of third SABA Championship.
  • With this win, India qualified for the FIBA Asia
    Championship in China. FIBA Asia Championship will be played in September 2015.
  • The winning team was given a cash prize of 35000 rupees as a
    personal gesture of Basketball Federation of India President K Govindraj.

Mercedes driver Lewis
Hamilton of Britain won 2015 Formula 1 British Grand Prix title
  • Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain on 5 July 2015
    secured the 2015 Formula 1 British Grand Prix title by winning the final race
    held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England.
  • While his team Nico Rosberg stood second, Ferrari driver
    Sebastian Vettel was in the third position. Both the drivers belong to Germany.
  • In the final race, Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) and Sergio
    Perez (Mexico) of Force India stood at seventh and ninth positions
    respectively.

Obituaries
Renowned Urdu
novelist Abdullah Hussain passed away
  • Renowned Urdu novelist from Pakistan Abdullah Hussain died
    on 4 July 2015 in Lahore after battling with blood cancer. He was 84.He is
    survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
  • He authored the bestseller and critically acclaimed novel
    Udas Naslain, it is considered as a masterpiece of Urdu literature. His other
    famous novels are Baagh, Nadaar Loag and short stories Faraib and Nashaib.
    Hussain was also awarded with the Prime Minister’s Lifetime Achievement Award
    in 2015 for his work.
