Government honours CBDT for resolving public grievances

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes
    (CBDT) was on 4 September 2017 honoured by Minister of State for Personnel
    Jitendra Singh for successfully resolving public grievances.
  • The CBDT was honoured for resolving
    grievances in the third category of the government departments getting more
    than 2,000 grievances during a quarter. The body is the apex policy making body
    for the Income Tax department.
  • Besides CBDT, four other
    departments were also awarded under three categories of organisations, divided
    on the basis of the volume of grievances received and disposed of by them.
  • The Department of Administrative
    Reforms and Public Grievances and Ministry of Development of North Eastern
    Region were awarded in the category of ministries or departments receiving up
    to 300 grievances in a quarter.
  • On the other hand, the Ministry
    of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Panchayati Raj ministry were
    honoured in the category of organisations receiving more than 300 and up to
    2,000 complaints in a quarter.
  • Speaking on the occasion,
    Jitendra Singh said that other departments should also learn from the mechanism
    developed by the CBDT for the grievance disposal.

BRICS Summit adopts documents on cooperation in areas of Economy and
Trade, Innovation and Customs

  • BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India,
    China and South Africa) nations on 4 September 2017 signed four documents that
    aim at improving and broadening cooperation mechanism and promoting industrial
    and technical upgradation to enhance economic complementarities.
The documents were signed with
the hope to give a boost to trade ties between the five nations of the group.
Documents signed in the presence of BRICS Leaders during BRICS Summit – 2017 in
Xiamen, China includes
1. BRICS Action Agenda on
Economic and Trade Cooperation
2. BRICS Action Plan for
Innovation Cooperation(2017-2020)
3. Strategic Framework of BRICS
Customs Cooperation
4. Memorandum of Understanding
between the BRICS Business Council and the New Development Bank on Strategic

  • These documents were signed
    during the summit on Action Agenda on Economic and Trade Cooperation,
    Innovation, Customs Cooperation and MOU with Development Bank on Strategic
  • BRICS action plan for innovation
    cooperation intends to facilitate innovation driven development for sustainable
    development. Strategic frame work of BRICS custom cooperation is meant for
    mutual sharing of information recombination of customs control and mutual
    assistance in enforcement as guiding principles.
CIPAM-DIPP launches social media campaign to promote Geographical

  • The Cell for IPR Promotions and
    Management (CIPAM) on 4 September 2017 launched a social media campaign to
    promote Indian Geographical Indications (GIs).
  • The CIPAM comes under the aegis
    of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Union Ministry of
    Commerce and Industry.
  • The campaign will be promoted
    with #LetsTalkIP which is an ongoing movement initiated by CIPAM to make more
    people aware about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights.
  • The promotion of GIs is in line
    with the Government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.
  • A Geographical Indication is a
    sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess
    qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
  • Such signs convey an assurance of
    quality and distinctiveness, which is essentially attributable to its origin in
    that defined geographical locality. Darjeeling Tea, Mahabaleshwar Strawberry,
    Blue Pottery of Jaipur, Banarasi Sarees and Tirupati Laddus are some of the

    the country as they are an integral part of India’s rich culture and collective
    intellectual heritage.
  • It is an area of strength and
    optimism for India, whereby the GI tag has accorded protection to a number of
    hand-made and manufactured products, especially in the informal sector.

    the rural economy in remote areas, by supplementing the incomes of artisans,
    farmers, weavers and craftsmen.

Nitin Gadkari announces formation of task force for Namami Gange’s
speedy implementation

  • Union minister Nitin Gadkari, who
    assumed additional charge of water resources on 4 September 2017, has announced
    the formation of an inter-ministerial task force for speedy implementation of
    the Centre’s Namami Gange mission.
  • Along with this, the Minister
    announced that the Water Resources Ministry would come out with a detailed
    schedule on achieving various targets under the mission in a time-bound and
    transparent manner within a week.
  • Further, Gadkari praised former
    Water Resources minister Uma Bharti for working hard and doing all the ground
    work towards cleaning the river in the past three years and said he would try
    to see that the ministry attained all the goals she had set.
  • “We will form a task force. We
    will come out with a schedule of targets to be achieved under the mission in a
    week. We will try to realise the dreams of the prime minister in a time-bound,
    transparent manner and we will attain all the deadlines fixed by Umaji,” said

    drinking water and sanitation and rural development among others.

Union Health Ministry launches two new contraceptives Antara and Chhaya

  • The Union Ministry of Health and
    Family Welfare on 5 September 2017 launched two new contraceptives- an
    injectable contraceptive MPA under the ‘Antara’ programme and a contraceptive
    pill ‘Chhaya’ in the public health system to expand the basket of contraceptive
    choices for couples.
  • These contraceptives have been
    launched in 10 states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya
    Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha and Goa.
  • The Antara and Chhaya
    contraceptives are presently available for free in Medical Colleges and District
  • These contraceptives are safe and
    highly effective. The ‘Antara’ injectable is effective for three months and the
    ‘Chayya’ pill is effective for one week.

Teacher’s Day celebrated across India on birth anniversary of Dr S

  • Teacher’s Day was celebrated on 5
    September 2017 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Former President Dr.
    Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • To mark the occasion, schools and
    colleges throughout India organised various programmes to honour of teachers
    who shaped the lives of students.
  • Also, the Union Environment
    Ministry launched an environment awareness initiative, Prakriti Khoj, on the
    occasion of Teachers’ Day.
  • Teacher’s day was created in 1962
    to mark the birth anniversary of the second president of India Dr S
    Radhakrishnan, who was also an academician and teacher.
International Day of Charity 2017 observed globally

  • The International Day of Charity
    was observed across the globe on 5 September 2017 to commemorate the death
    anniversary of Mother Teresa who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her
    charity work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress.
  • Mother Teresa was born as Agnes
    Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910. In 1928, she went to India and devoted herself to
    helping the poor. In 1950, she founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in
    Kolkota (Calcutta) which became noted for its work among the poor and the dying
    in that city.
  • Mother Teresa died on 5 September
    1997 at 87 years of age. She was proclaimed as a Saint by Pope Francis on 4
    September 2016.

  • The official song for the FIFA

Amritpal Singh creates history, becomes first Indian to be signed by
Australian Basketball Team

  • Captain of Indian basketball team
    Amritpal Singh on 31 August 2017 created history by becoming the first Indian
    player to be signed by an Australian Basketball team. 
  • Earlier, Singh had been a part of
    the four-member Indian team of Amjyot Singh, Yadwinder Singh and Vishesh
    Bhriguvanshi, who were a part of the National Basketball League (NBL) Draft
    Combine in Melbourne, Australia in 2017.
  • Later, he was invited by the
    Sydney Kings for the Atlas Challenge 2017 tournament in China. They were
    impressed by his performance at the Atlas Challenge tournament, where he was a
    part of winner team and scored a massive 17 points and 16 rebounds in the
    championship match.
