News
Govt notifies Rs. 200 currency notes

  • The government on Wednesday
    notified currency notes in the denomination of Rs. 200.
  • “In exercise of the powers
    conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 24 of the Reserve Bank of India Act,
    1934, and on the recommendations of the Central Board of Directors of the
    Reserve Bank of India, the Central Government hereby specifies the denomination
    of bank notes of the value of two hundred rupees,” said an official
    notification.
  • The new notes are expected to
    come into circulation from next month. The Reserve Bank of India had recently
    also unveiled a new series of Rs. 50 currency notes.
  • Addressing presspersons later in
    the day, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said there was no discussion within the
    Government on phasing out Rs. 2,000 notes.

NITI Aayog to launch Mentor India Campaign

  • NITI Aayog on 22 August 2017
    announced to launch the Mentor India Campaign, a strategic nation building
    initiative to engage leaders who can guide and mentor students at more than 900
    Atal Tinkering Labs.
  • These Atal Tinkering Labs are
    established across the country as a part of the Atal Innovation Mission. 

Highlights of the Mentor India Campaign
  • Mentor India is aimed at
    maximizing the impact of Atal Tinkering Labs.
  • It aims to engage leaders who
    will nurture and guide students in the Atal Tinkering Labs.
  • These labs are non-prescriptive
    by nature, and mentors are expected to be enablers rather than instructors.
  • These leaders will be expected to
    spend one to two hours every week in such labs to enable students experience,
    learn and practice future skills such as design and computational thinking.

About Atal Tinkering Labs
  • Atal Tinkering Labs are dedicated
    works spaces where students from Class 6th to Class 12th learn innovation
    skills and develop ideas that will go on to transform India.
  • The labs are powered to acquaint
    students with up to date equipment such as 3D printers, robotics &
    electronics development tools, Internet of things & sensors etc.
  • The government is in the process
    of setting up 900 such labs across India and also aims to have 2000 labs by end
    of 2017.    

Chhattisgarh govt to distribute 5.5 mn smartphones for free under the
Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY)

  • To reduce the digital divide, the
    Chhattisgarh government has decided to distribute around 5.5 million
    smartphones for free under the Sanchar Kranti Yojana (SKY).
  • “The state cabinet today approved
    the proposal to distribute free smartphones under the SKY launched in the state
    to reduce the digital divide,” said the state’s Industry Minister Amar Agrawal,
    adding that the distribution would be taken up in two phases.
  • In the first phase, phones would
    be distributed to families living in villages with a population of over 1,000,
    besides urban poor families and youth enrolled in colleges. The villages
    selected should have full or partial mobile network coverage.
  • In the first phase to be taken up
    in 2017-18 and 2018-19, the minister said, 5.08 million smartphones would be
    distributed and the remaining 480,000 phones would be distributed in the second
    phase of the programme. In the second phase, villages having a population of
    less than 1,000 would be covered.

National Sports Museum to be established in New Delhi
  • The Union Ministry of Youth
    Affairs and Sports on 23 August 2017 announced that it will establish National
    Sports Museum at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The decision in this regard was
    taken three months back. The current venue for museum was finalized by the
    Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel himself.
  • The first-of-its-kind museum will
    showcase India’s achievements in sports.
  • It will also focus on the
    traditional sports within the country.
  • The aim of the museum is to
    popularise the sports as a way of life within the country.
  • The first phase for establishing
    the museum will commence soon as the idea has been transformed from concept to
    museum model stage by the experts.
  • The proposed museum will go
    beyond the classical approach of a collection of memorabilia to become an
    interactive venue of interest for all age groups.
  • The museum will display
    achievements of the Indian greats in sports and also act as an educational hub
    and offer opportunity for the young to delve into some sporting activity.

Salman, Akshay on Forbes list of highest paid actors

  • Indian superstars Shahrukh Khan,
    Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are among the top 10 highest paid actors in the
    world in a list compiled by Forbes that has been topped by Transformers actor
    Mark Wahlberg.
  • Shahrukh is at the eighth spot on
    the list with earnings of $38 million, followed by Salman in the ninth position
    with $37 million. Akshay completes the top 10 with $35.5 million earnings.
  • Wahlberg is Hollywood’s
    highest-paid leading man, earning $68 million in the scoring period. Forbes
    said the Boston native recorded his highest-ever payday thanks to soaring fees
    for movies such as Transformers: The Last Knight and the forthcoming Daddy’s
    Home 2.
  • Wahlberg replaced last year’s
    top-ranked star, Dwayne Johnson, who comes in at the second spot with $65 million
    earnings.
  • On the third spot is The Fate of
    the Furious star Vin Diesel with $54.5 million earnings.
  • Rounding out the top five is Adam
    Sandler at the number four position with $50.5 million and Jackie Chan on
    number five with $49 million.
  • Sandler returns to the list
    courtesy the lucrative deal with Netflix that allows him to produce his own
    movies for the platform.
  • The world’s 20 highest-paid
    actors tallied a combined $720 million between June 2016 and June 2017, before
    fees and taxes.

International Day for the Remembrance of Slave Trade and Its Abolition
2017 observed globally

  • The International Day for the
    Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition was observed across the world
    on 23 August 2017.
  • The Day marks the anniversary of
    the 1791 insurrection of enslaved men and women in the western part of the
    island of Santo Domingo, which is now known as Haiti. This Haitian Revolution
    led to their freedom and independence in 1804. This uprising was a turning
    point in human history.
  • The Day was first celebrated in a
    number of countries, particularly in Haiti on 23 August 1998 and at Goree in
    Senegal in 23 August 1999.

Obituaries
Former Manipur CM Rishang Keishing passes away

  • Former Manipur Chief Minister
    Rishang Keishing passed away on 22 August 2017 following a brief illness. He
    was 96. He is survived by two sons and four daughters.
  • A freedom fighter and member of
    India’s first parliament (1952-57), Keishing served as the Chief Minister of
    Manipur from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1997.
  • In 1964, he joined the Congress
    party at the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru.
  • He retired from the Rajya Sabha
    as its oldest member in 2014 after serving two terms since being elected to the
    upper house in 2002.
