    as the Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the United States (US). Prince Abdullah bin
    Faisal bin Turki was removed as Ambassador to the US.

SBI, CREDAI ink MoU for concessional loan for housing projects

  • State-owned SBI and realtors’
    body CREDAI have signed an agreement to provide loans at a concessional rate to
    builders as well as customers for affordable housing projects.
  • SBI and CREDAI have signed a
    memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate and work towards the
    development of the real estate sector, specifically through the affordable housing
    and green housing projects.
  • The duration of the agreement is
    for a period of three years, State Bank of India (SBI) said in a statement.

HCL to acquire US-based firm UFS for Rs 199 cr

  • HCL Technologies on Monday said
    it would acquire US-based mortgage business service provider Urban Fulfillment
    Services, LLC for more than Rs 199 crore ($30 million), in a deal that would
    help it to expand its local workforce in the US.
  • Through the acquisition of UFS, a
    15-year-old mortgage business process and fulfilment services provider spread
    across three centres in the US, HCL aims to scale up its digital technology
    based services to clients. India’s fourth largest IT service providers will
    also see 350 highly-skilled professionals of UFS joining its team in the US.
  • The deal is likely to be
    completed by June depending on certain regulatory approvals for transfer of
    licenses.

India, South Korea signed MoU for Defence Industry Co-Operation in
Shipbuilding
  • India and South Korea on 21 April
    2017 signed a inter-governmental Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for defence
    industry co-operation in shipbuilding.
  • The MoU was signed by Secretary
    (Defence Production), Ashok Kumar Gupta from the Indian side and Minister of
    Defence Acquisition and Programme Administration (DAPA), Chang Myoung-Jin from
    Korea’s side.
  • The MoU seeks to develop and
    strengthen defence industry co-operation between India and South Korea.
  • As part of the MoU, the two sides
    will recommend the organisations for collaborating in the implementation of
    specific projects.
  • The organisations recommended for
    co-operative projects may conclude separate agreements (contracts) between them
    to implement the specific projects.
  • The MoU will be initially valid
    for a period of five years and would be automatically extendable for further
    successive five year at a time.

World Book and Copyright Day 2017 observed
  • The World Book and Copyright Day
    was celebrated on 23 April 2017 across the globe. To mark the occasion, special
    events were organised to promote reading, publishing and copyright across the
    world including India.
  • The World Book and Copyright Day
    is an opportunity to highlight the power of books to promote UNESCO’s vision of
    knowledge societies that are inclusive, pluralistic, equitable, open and
    participatory for all citizens.
  • To mark the World Book and
    Copyright Day 2017, the UNESCO released three books – Reshaping Cultural
    Policies, Rethinking Education in a Changing World and Reading in a Mobile Era.

English Language Day observed across the world
  • The United Nations English
    Language Day 2017 was observed globally on 23 April 2017.
  • The Day is observed every year on
    the date that is traditionally observed as both, the birthday and the date of
    death of William Shakespeare, the greatest writer ever-known in English
    language.
  • The day was established in 2010
    by the Department of Public Information, as a result of its efforts to
    establish language days for each of United Nation’s six official languages.

Yogi Adityanath inaugurated National Panchayati Raj Diwas function

  • The National Panchayati Raj Diwas
    was observed across India on 24 April 2017. The day is observed every year to
    mark the passing of the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992, which came
    into effect on 24 April 1993.
  • The day would be commemorated
    with a function in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The function would be inaugurated by
    the UP CM Yogi Adityanath and presided over by Birender Singh, the Union
    Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking water.

Newton wins Best Film at Hong Kong Film Festival

  • Actor Rajkummar Rao-starrer film
    ‘Newton’ in April 2017 won the best film honour at the 41st Hong Kong
    International Film Festival (HKIFF).
  • The film has its world premiere
    at the 67th Berlin Film Festival where it won the International Federation of
    Art Cinemas (CICAE) award in its Forum segment.
  • Directed by Amit Masurkar, Newton
    is a political satire. The movie revolves around Newton Kumar, a rookie
    government clerk, who is sent on election duty to a naxal-controlled town in
    the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh. Faced with the apathy of security
    forces and the looming fear of guerrilla attacks by communist rebels, he tries
    his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the odds stacked against him.

Kailash Satyarthi honoured with P C Chandra Puraskaar 2017

  • Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi
    on 23 April 2017 was presented the P C Chandra Puraskar.
  • Satyarthi was honoured with the
    award for his global crusade against child slavery and exploitative child
    labour.
  • The 63-year-old Satyarthi was
    handed over a citation, a trophy and a cheque of Rs 10 lakh at an awards
    ceremony in Kolkata.

Sports –
Rafael Nadal wins Monte Carlo Masters Men’s Singles title

  • Rafael Nadal on 23 April 2017
    defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1 6-3 to win the Monte Carlo Masters Men’s
    Singles title.
  • With the win, Nadal became the
    first man in the Open era to win the same event 10 times. He won eight Monte
    Carlo titles in a row from 2005 to 2012. He won the title again in the year
    2016.
  • Also, it is Nadal’s first title
    of the season, having lost his previous three finals.

Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas won Monte-Carlo Masters Men’s Doubles
title
  • India’s Rohan Bopanna and
    Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas on 23 April 2017 captured their first ATP World Tour
    team title.
  • The duo defeated seventh-seeded
    Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 in 74 minutes in the
    Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters final.
  • Bopanna and Cuevas earned 1000
    points in the Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings and share € 253950 in prize money.

Saudi Arabia King’s son Prince Khaled appointed as US Envoy

  • Saudi Arabia’s King Salman on 22
    April 2017 issued a royal decree stating the appointment of one of his sons
    Prince Khaled bin Salman bin Abdulaziz as the Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the
    United States (US). Prince Abdullah bin Faisal bin Turki was removed as
    Ambassador to the US.
  • The appointment of Prince Khaled
    to Washington signals the Saudi kingdom’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral
    ties with US under President Donald Trump.
  • Moreover, Saudi Arabia is the
    world’s third largest defence spender. Prince Khaled’s appointment positions
    him as an influential broker in deals with US manufacturers.

World News –
Google to introduce ‘Copyless Paste’ feature

  • Google on 23 April 2017
    introduced the first code for its new feature ‘Copyless Paste’ in its Chrome
    app running on Android OS.
  • The Copyless Paste feature will
    take data from Chrome usage and use that to improve the experience in other
    apps.
  • Copyless Paste feature will
    automatically copy the useful information and will suggest it for pasting in apps
    where it might be relevant.
  • For instance, If a user is
    checking out a restaurant website and then switch to the Maps app, the keyboard
    will automatically offer the name of that restaurant as a suggestion to enter
    into the search bar.
  • The new feature is not yet
    functional now as it is still in its testing phase.
