    . The report stated that currently, China with a
    population of about 1.41 billion and India with a population of about 1.34

  13. Fashion label Rheson, owned by actress Sonam Kapoor and her producer-sister Rhea
    Kapoor
    , on 22 June 2017 won the Compassionate Business Award 2017 from the
    People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India for a line of bags
    made exclusively of vegan materials.
  14. Anti-hunger activist Ankit Kawatra is all set to receive the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders
    Award with 60 others from all 53 Commonwealth countries.

Financial and Banking News
RBI announces names of five-member overseeing committee

  • The Reserve Bank of India today
    announced names of the members of overseeing committee.
  • The composition of OC will be as
    follows with effect from September 7, 2017: Pradeep Kumar (chairman), Janki
    Ballabh, M B N Rao, Y M Deosthalee, S Raman.
  • Reconstituted OC will work with
    an expanded mandate to review cases being restructured under the scheme for
    sustainable structuring of stressed assets (S4A).
  • Overseeing committee will, for
    the present, have five members, including a chairman, and will work through
    multiple benches as may be necessary.
  • Reconstituted OC will review
    resolution of cases where aggregate exposure of the banking sector to the
    borrowing entity is greater than Rs 500 crore.
Ministry of Electronics and IT launches webpage for smooth GST
implementation

  • The Union Ministry of Electronics
    and IT has launched a dedicated webpage to help companies in the IT services
    and electronics sector to adapt to the new GST regime.
  • According to an official
    statement released by the Ministry, the webpage has been launched to ensure
    smooth implementation of GST from 1 July 2017.
  • The webpage will help address
    issues of companies and taxpayers that are related to Information Technology
    Services and Electronics goods and also enable them to file for grievance
    redressal with regard to the tax’s implementation.
  • The release further added that
    individuals, companies and entrepreneurs in the IT and electronics sector can
    visit the webpage for sector-specific information
  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST),
    the biggest tax reform since Independence will be launched in the midnight of
    30 June and 1 July.
Mahindra Aero, Israeli firm ink MoU

  • Elbit Systems–Cyclone of Israel
    and Mahindra Aerostructures have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to
    collaborate on the production of aerostructures parts and assemblies.
  • Under the arrangement, Cyclone
    will source content for its existing work packages from Mahindra.
  • Mahindra’s aerostructures
    manufacturing facility near Bengaluru exports primary structural assemblies for
    the Mahindra Airvan 8 aircraft. Cyclone, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit
    Systems, serves as the parent’s design and manufacturing centre for composite
    and metal structural aircraft assemblies and parts.
  • The company’s customer base
    includes Boeing (commercial and military), Bombardier, Lockheed Martin, Northrop
    Grumman, Spirit Aerosystems, Sikorsky, Textron Aviation and Triumph.

Uttarakhand becomes 4th state to be open defecation free

  • Uttarakhand has become the fourth
    state to be open defecation free (ODF) in the country.
  • The same was declared by Union
    Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar during a
    Swachh Bharat Programme organized in ONGC, Dehradun on 22 June 2017.
  • Uttarakhand has achieved the
    status after Sikkim, which was the first state to be declared open defecation
    free and then Himachal Pradesh and Kerala, both of which were declared ODF free
    in the latter half of 2016. The state has achieved the feat after undertaking a
    major cleanliness drive.
  • Three more states-Haryana, Punjab
    and Gujarat are also expected to follow suit on the effort in this financial
    year.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Prakash
    Pant, a senior Minister in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly stated that
    until March 2017, only seven districts in the state were ODF. Haridwar, Paudi
    and Dehradun became ODF on 31 May.

ONGC and UNESCO join hands to get Chilika Lake heritage site tag

  • A joint team of the Oil and
    Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific
    and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in June 2017 carried out a preliminary
    survey for the conservation of Chilika Lake.
  • The survey has been done to help
    India’s largest coastal lagoon secure the world heritage site tag.
  • In order to get world heritage
    site recognition, the lake should have outstanding global value in terms of
    biodiversity and eco-system.
  • During the team’s visit to the
    periphery areas of the lake, they interacted with various stakeholders in the
    village and local officials, where certain focal areas were identified to begin
    with, so that the efforts could finally lead to the declaration of Chilika Lake
    as a heritage site.
  • The ONGC-UNESCO made efforts for
    the comprehensive development of the eco-system of the lake, particularly the
    wetlands of Mangalajodi, which is intrinsically linked to the conservation of
    migratory and endemic birds.
1st India-Russia Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation
held

  • To bolster the cooperation in the
    science and technology sector, India and Russia on 21 June 2017 identified key
    areas of cooperation in the sector. The identified areas include space and
    marine technologies, IT and deep ocean engineering.
  • The areas were chosen at the
    first meeting of India-Russia Joint Committee on Science and Technology
    Cooperation in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. The meeting was co-chaired by
    the Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and the Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry
    Rogozin.
  • The India-Russia High-Level
    Committee on Science and Technology is a newly established committee and it was
    established to discuss cooperation in high technologies. Reports suggest that
    the both sides finalised the working procedures for the Committee to ensure
    speedy decision making in implementing joint projects.
  • The meeting was held on the
    sidelines of the Technoprom Exhibition in the city of Novosibirsk. Technoprom
    is a major annual science, technology and innovation exhibition of Russia. In
    addition to this, the Defence Minister also addressed the main Plenary Session
    of the Technoprom, which is a major annual science, technology and innovation
    exhibition of Russia.
India, Sri Lanka to ink MoU for cooperation in traditional medicine,
homoeopathy

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gave its approval for signing an
    Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in Traditional Systems of
    Medicine and Homoeopathy between Ministry of AYUSH the Ministry of Health,
    Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine of Sri Lanka.
  • The signing of the proposed MoU
    will enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the areas of
    traditional medicine and homoeopathy.
  • The financial resources necessary
    to conduct research, training courses, conferences will be met from the
    existing allocated budget and existing plan schemes of Ministry of AYUSH.
  • The activities between the two
    sides will start immediately after signing of the MoU by the two countries.
  • Both countries share a common
    culture with respect to Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani Systems of Medicine.
    Moreover, there are a large number of medicinal plants, particularly those
    found in tropical region which are common to the two countries given similar
    geo-climatic factors.
Tata Trust, AP sign MoU to accelerate the Rural Prosperity Mission

  • Tata Trust has joined hands with
    the Andhra Pradesh Government to accelerate the Rural Prosperity Mission, in
    which the World Bank is a strategic partner.
  • An MoU was signed between the
    Tata Trust and the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty of the State
    Government in the presence of the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu in
    Vijayawada.
  • World Bank is supporting the CM’s
    vision of ensuring a net income of Rs. 10,000 per month for each self-help
    group (SHG) household.
  • A Centre of Excellence for Rural
    Prosperity will be established to study and catalyse practical applications of
    technology across agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, handloom
    and non-farm enterprises, according to a press release.
  • All the relevant technology,
    strategy and capacity building will be supported by a collaboration of the
    stakeholders, World Bank, Tata Trusts, SERP and AP State Development Planning
    Society (APSDPS).
  • Training in enterprise and
    business sense will be provided by International Labour Organisation (ILO) and
    Kerala-based Kudumbashree, while skill development, training and placement
    facilities will be supported by IL&FS.

Vladimir Voronkov appointed as Under-Secretary-General of UN
Counter-Terrorism Office

  • United Nations Secretary-General
    Antonio Guterres on 21 June 2017 appointed Vladimir Ivanovich Voronkov of the
    Russian Federation as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism
    Office.
  • The Under-Secretary-General will
    provide strategic leadership to United Nations counter-terrorism efforts,
    participate in the decision-making process of the UN and ensure that the
    cross-cutting origins and impact of terrorism are reflected in the work of the
    United Nations.
  • At present, Vladimir Voronkov
    serves as the Russian Federation’s Permanent Representative to the
    International Organizations in Vienna.
  • Prior to his appointment, he
    served as the Director of the Department of European Cooperation at the
    Ministry of Affairs in Moscow from 2008 to 2011.
Kenneth I Juster to be next US Ambassador to India

  • Senior White House official
    Kenneth I Juster, a top aide of US President Donald Trump, is set to become
    America’s next Ambassador to India. The announcement regarding the appointment
    was made by White House on 21 June 2017.
  • Once nominated and confirmed by
    the US Senate, Juster will succeed Richard Verma. Verma, the first
    Indian-American to head this position, put in his papers when Trump replaced
    Barack Obama as the President of the United States.
  • Presently, Juster is serving as
    the Deputy Assistant to the US President for International Economic Affairs and
    as Deputy Director of the National Economic Council in the White House.
World News
China unveils World’s first train that runs on Virtual Tracks

  • China has unveiled the world’s
    first ‘railless train’ that runs on a virtual track making use of a sensor
    technology instead of metal rails.
  • This Autonomous Rail Rapid
    Transit (ART) has been developed by China’s CRRC Zhuzhou Institute. It is a
    part of China’s attempts to develop an ‘intelligent rail express system’.  The company also makes key parts for
    high-speed railways.
  • The 30-metre long train at
    present has three carriages and can carry around 300 passengers.
  • The number of carriages can be
    increased in the future, taking the total capacity up to 500 passengers.
  • The train is fitted with sensors
    that allow it to detect the dimensions of the roads and plan its own route
    without the need for metal railway tracks.
  • Further, it has rubber wheels,
    which can be automatically guided without rails.
  • The train is also non-polluting
    and environment friendly, as it is battery powered.
  • While it can travel a distance of
    25 km by just charging for 10 minutes, on a full charge, it can travel for
    distances up to 40 km.

Intel partners with International Olympic Committee

  • The International Olympic
    Committee (IOC) and Intel on 21 June 2017 announced a long-term technology
    partnership.
  • The partnership was announced at
    an official signing ceremony in New York with IOC President Thomas Bach and the
    US tech giant’s Chief Executive Officer Brian Krzanich.
  • Intel will join “The Olympic
    Partner” (TOP) worldwide sponsorship programme, becoming a Worldwide TOP
    Partner through 2024. The partnership will transform the Olympic Games and the
    Olympic experience.
  • The first Olympic Games
    activation will take place at the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018 in
    South Korea in February 2018. The Intel technology will provide real-time
    virtual reality viewing of the Olympic Winter Games.

India to become most populated country in the world by 2024, says UN
report

  • In roughly seven years, around
    2024, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China, according
    to a UN report – the World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision–published
    by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
  • The report stated that currently,
    China with a population of about 1.41 billion and India with a population of
    about 1.34 billion are two of the most populous countries comprising 19 and 18
    percent of the total global population.
  • The 2017 Revision of World Population
    Prospects is the 25th round of official UN population estimates and
    projections. In its 24th round of estimates released in 2015, it was projected
    that the population of India will surpass that of China’s by 2022.
Main Highlights of the Forecast

  • By 2024, India and China are
    expected to roughly have a population of about 1.44 billion each.
  • After that, India’s population is
    projected to continue growing and touch 1.5 billion in 2030 and approach 1.66
    billion by 2050, while China’s population is projected to remain stable until
    the 2030s, after which it may begin a slow decline.
  • India’s population is forecasted
    to eventually see a decline after 2050 and come down to 1.51 billion by 2100
    but it will still remain as the most populous country in the world.
  • Life expectancy at birth in India
    will be 71 years in 2025-2030, which is forecasted to grow to 74.2 years in
    2045-2050.
  • The under-five mortality rate is
    expected to decline from 32.3 deaths under age five per 1,000 live births in
    2025-2030 to 18.6 in 2045-2050.
World Population Forecast 

  • The current world population of
    7.6 billion is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and
    11.2 billion in 2100.
  • The upward trend in population
    size is expected to continue with roughly 83 million people being added to the
    world’s population every year, even though fertility levels are assumed to
    continue to decline.
  • From 2017 to 2050, nine countries
    are expected to collectively account for more than half of the world’s
    projected population increase. The countries include India, Nigeria, the
    Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, the United Republic of
    Tanzania, the United States of America, Uganda and Indonesia.

  • Fashion label Rheson, owned by
    actress Sonam Kapoor and her producer-sister Rhea Kapoor, on 22 June 2017 won
    the Compassionate Business Award 2017 from the People for the Ethical Treatment
    of Animals (PETA) India for a line of bags made exclusively of vegan materials.
  • As per PETA, the demand for
    cruelty-free fashion is on the rise and at such point of time, companies like
    Rheson are setting trends by providing optimum quality fashion wear and
    accessories made of vegan materials, harming no animals.
  • Sonam was crowned as PETA’s
    Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2016.
Indian anti-hunger activist Ankit Kawatra chosen for Queen’s Young
Leaders Award

  • Anti-hunger activist Ankit
    Kawatra is all set to receive the prestigious Queen’s Young Leaders Award with
    60 others from all 53 Commonwealth countries.
  • Kawatra will be honoured by Queen
    Elizabeth II at a ceremony to be held in the Buckingham Palace on 29 June 2017.
  • Kawatra quit his corporate
    business job in 2014 and founded a not-for-profit organisation Feeding India
    that works towards solving problems of hunger, malnutrition and food wastage.
    The organisation distributes extra food from restaurants, canteens, households,
    corporates to help people in need.
  • The activist started working for
    the cause after witnessing massive amount of extra food being thrown away in a
    wedding.
  • At present, Feeding India works
    in 43 cities with 4500 volunteers and has served more than 8.5 million meals to
    vulnerable individuals such as children, women, old age citizens, disabled
    people et cetera.

Italian fashion legend Carla Fendi passes away

  • Italian fashion legend Carla
    Fendi passed away in the third week of June 2017 in Rome. She was 79.
  • Carla’s death was announced on 20
    June 2017 by her family.
  • Carla, one of the five Italian
    sisters at the helm of the iconic Italian label, was the public face of the
    company famous colourful ‘baguette’ bags.
