  1. Following the existing problem in
    which the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are
    failing to cope with the huge cash demand of people, Reserve Bank of India on
    14 November 2016

    an eight-member task force to re-calibrate all ATMs. The eight-member task

    deputy governor SS Mundra

  2. Maharashtra on 15 November 2016 became the first Indian state to adopt Fly Ash
    Utilisation Policy
    . The policy will pave way for prosperity by
    creating wealth from waste, and environment protection.
  3. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India on 15 November 2016 signed a 500 million US dollar loan to build a 9.8 km
    long road bridge across the Ganges River
    . This will be India’s
    longest river bridge.
  4. India and Israel inked two agreements in
    the field of water resources management and agriculture
    . The
    agreements were inked on 15 November 2016 after the delegation level talks
    between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Israeli President Reuven
    Rivlin in New Delhi.
  5. With political upheavals like the
    election of Donald Trump to the US presidency and Brexit, Oxford Dictionaries
    has declared “post-truth” to be its
    international word of the year citing a 2,000 per cent spike in its usage.
  6. The International Day for Tolerance was
    observed globally on 16 November 2016
    .

Finance –
Task force led by SS Mundra formed to recalibrate ATMs

  • Following the existing problem in
    which the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are failing to cope with the huge
    cash demand of people, Reserve Bank of India on 14 November 2016 constituted an
    eight-member task force to re-calibrate all ATMs.
  • This re-calibration would help
    the cash handling machines to dispense the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series
    Banknotes including a new High Denomination of 2000 rupees in new designs.
  • The eight-member task force, led
    by RBI deputy governor SS Mundra, will comprise officials from banks, NPCI,
    Department of Currency Management, Department of Payment and Settlement System
    and home and finance ministries. 
Terms of Reference of the Task Force is

  • Expeditious reactivation of all
    ATMs in a planned manner
  • Any other matter connected to the
    above
Banks whose members will be the
participant of the task-force are State Bank of India, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank
and HDFC Bank.
Besides, representative of ATM
office equipment manufacturers (OEMs), white label ATM (WLA) operators, Managed
Service Providers and cash in transit (CIT) companies will be invited to the
Task Force’s deliberations. The task force is also free to invite others as may
be needed.
Maharashtra becomes first Indian state to adopt Fly Ash Utilisation
Policy

  • Maharashtra on 15 November 2016
    became the first Indian state to adopt Fly Ash Utilisation Policy. The policy
    will pave way for prosperity by creating wealth from waste, and environment
    protection.
  • The decision to implement the
    policy was taken at the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by state Chief Minister
    Devendra Fadnavis.
Key highlights of the Fly Ash
Utilisation Policy

  • As per the policy, 100 per cent
    of fly ash generated from thermal power plants and biogas plants will be used
    for construction activities.
  • This fly ash will be used to make
    bricks, blocks, tiles, wall panels, cement and other construction materials.
  • The policy also allows usage of
    fly ash within 300 kilometres of the power plant. Earlier, it was allowed
    to  be used within 100 kilometres radius.
  • The policy will create new
    employment opportunities in the power plant areas.
  • It will also make available raw
    material for construction at low cost to help Housing for All projects.
India and ADB sign 500 million US dollar loan to build country’s
longest river bridge across Ganges River

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB)
    and the Government of India on 15 November 2016 signed a 500 million US dollar
    loan to build a 9.8 km long road bridge across the Ganges River. This will be
    India’s longest river bridge.
  • Along with ADB’s loan and 900000
    US dollar in technical assistance to improve bridge operation and management,
    the Bihar Government will provide support equivalent to 215 million US dollar.
  • The project is expected to be
    completed by the end of December 2020.
Key highlights of the proposed
river bridge

  • The proposed bridge will improve
    transport connectivity between North and South Bihar. It will also improve the
    link between Patna and the surrounding areas.
  • It will cover both channels of
    the Ganges River and will also serve as an alternate route to the existing
    Ganga Bridge.
  • The project will also build
    viaducts, embankments, and toll and service facilities. It will link to
    national highway networks.
  • The bridge will significantly
    reduce travel time to Patna from the surrounding regions, in particular north
    Bihar. It will eventually ease access of people to state’s administrative and
    social services.
  • It is expected that the bridge
    will benefit over 9 million people.

India, Israel inked two agreements on water resource management and
agriculture

  • India and Israel inked two
    agreements in the field of water resources management and agriculture. The
    agreements were inked on 15 November 2016 after the delegation level talks
    between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Israeli President Reuven
    Rivlin in New Delhi.
  • Israeli President Reuven Rivlin
    is on an eight-day visit to India (from 14 November to 21 November 2016). This
    was his first ever visit to India and first by any Israeli President in past
    two decades. The last and first President of Israel to visit India was Ezer
    Weizman in 1997.
Points of discussions during
the delegation level talks were

  • Enhancing agricultural
    productivity and efficiency.
  • Boosting research and innovation
    linkages.
  • Employment of applications of
    science and technology for the benefit of the two societies.
  • Forging strong trade links and
    investment ties.
  • Building defence ties to secure
    people of the two nations.
  • Enhancing people to people ties
    through greater cultural and tourism linkages.
  • Promotion in educational
    exchanges, which will allow students of the two nations to study in each
    other’s country, to bridge the bilateral partnership.
World –
Oxford Dictionaries names ‘post-truth’ word of the year

  • With political upheavals like the
    election of Donald Trump to the US presidency and Brexit, Oxford Dictionaries
    has declared “post-truth” to be its international word of the year citing a 2,000
    per cent spike in its usage.
  • The word is an adjective, defined
    in the dictionary as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective
    facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion
    and personal belief.”
  • The usage of the word has
    increased by around 2,000 per cent since last year, the dictionary’s research
    showed.
  • The word has been in existence
    for more than two decades but a rise in its demand coincided with the EU
    referendum and the US presidential race, Oxford Dictionaries said.

Padmini Rout wins National Women Premier Championship for third time

  • International Chess Master
    Padmini Rout on 14 November 2016 won the National Women Premier Chess
    Championship for the third time.
  • Rout played out a draw with her
    Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB ) teammate Eesha Karavade that made her
    achieve the hat-trick of title wins.
  • S Vijayalakshmi of Air India won
    silver medal while Karavade grabbed the bronze.
  • The triumph also ensured that
    Rout will be a part of the Indian women team in the next World team chess
    championship.
  • The other two confirmed members
    of the team are Grandmasters Koneru Humpy and D Harika. The remaining two
    places will be decided most likely according to February 2017 rating list.

International Day for Tolerance 2016 observed across the world

  • The International Day for
    Tolerance was observed globally on 16 November 2016. The Day aims at educating
    masses about the need for tolerance in society and helping them understand the
    negative effects of intolerance.
  • In order to mark the day and the
    125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, UNESCO instituted a prize in
    1995 for the promotion of tolerance and non-violence. The prize, named as the
    UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence,
    rewards significant activities in the fields of scientific, artistic, cultural
    or communication aimed at the promotion of a spirit of tolerance and
    non-violence.
  • In 2016, the UNESCO-Madanjeet
    Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence was awarded to
    Federal Research and Methodological Center for Tolerance Psychology and
    Education (Tolerance Center) of Russia.
