  1. India today joined hands with Germany to attain “pristinestatus of Ganga by adopting river basin management
    strategies used for cleansing rivers like Rhine and Danube of pollutants. Ministry
    of Water Resources and German International Cooperation (GIZ), owned by the
    German Federal Government, signed an agreement in this regard here today.
  2. Union Cabinet chaired by the
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 April 2016 approved to sign a Memorandum of
    Understanding (MoU) between India and United
    Arab Emirates (UAE) on cooperation in preventing and combating of Human
    Trafficking
    .
  3. Haryana Government on 12 April
    2016 decided to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram
    and Mewat as Nuh.
  4. Golden Tobacco Ltd. in April 2016 became the first company in India
    to implement the Union Health Ministry’s Cigarettes Packaging Amendment Rules,
    2014
    . As per it, both sides of the cigarette packs shall display specific
    health warnings in 85 percent of the area as against the present 40 percent.
  5. Union Cabinet chaired by the

    . BPR&D is a
    consultancy organisation under the Centre for modernisation of police forces.
  11. England and Nottinghamshire
    batsman James Taylor on 12 April 2016 announced his retirement at the age of 26
    due to ill health.

India –
India, Germany join hands to clean river Ganga

  • India today joined hands with
    Germany to attain “pristine” status of Ganga by adopting river basin
    management strategies used for cleansing rivers like Rhine and Danube of
    pollutants.
  • Ministry of Water Resources and
    German International Cooperation (GIZ), owned by the German Federal Government,
    signed an agreement in this regard here today.
  • The agreement was signed in the
    presence of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation secretary
    Shashi Shekhar and German Ambassador to India Dr Martin Ney.
  • The objective of the agreement is
    to enable responsible stakeholders at national and state levels to apply
    integrated river basin management approach for Ganga’s rejuvenation, the
    Ministry said in a statement.
  • The agreement will be based on
    “Indo-German Knowledge Exchange” and practical experience on
    strategic river basin management issues, effective data management system and
    public engagement, it said.
  • The project will closely
    cooperate with other national and international initiatives including
    Indo-German bilateral projects like ‘Support to National Urban Sanitation
    Policy (SNUSP)’ and ‘Sustainable Environment-friendly Industrial Production’
    (SEIP).

Union Cabinet approved India to sign MoU with UAE to prevent and combat
of Human Trafficking

  • Union Cabinet chaired by the
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 April 2016 approved to sign a Memorandum of
    Understanding (MoU) between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) on cooperation
    in preventing and combating of Human Trafficking.
  • The MoU will strengthen the bonds
    of friendship between the two countries and increase the bilateral cooperation
    on the issues of prevention, rescue, recovery and repatriation related to human
    trafficking especially women and children expeditiously.

Haryana government decided to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and Mewat as
Nuh

  • Haryana Government on 12 April
    2016 decided to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and Mewat as Nuh.
  • Chief Minister Manohar Lal
    Khattar has accorded approval to the proposal but this new decision will be
    placed before the Haryana cabinet before being sent to the Union Government.
  • The decision to change the name
    of Gurgaon was taken on the basis of the representations received at several
    forums by the people of Gurgaon. The city’s name change stems from a proposal
    by the municipal corporation in 2012. A committee had been formed to address
    the issue.

Golden Tobacco Ltd became first company in India to implement 85%
pictorial health warnings

  • Golden Tobacco Ltd. in April 2016
    became the first company in India to implement the Union Health Ministry’s
    Cigarettes Packaging Amendment Rules, 2014. As per it, both sides of the
    cigarette packs shall display specific health warnings in 85 percent of the
    area as against the present 40 percent.
  • Now, the packets of several
    brands of the company, namely Brands Panama and Golden Gold Flake, manufactured
    from 1 April 2016 will carry larger images.
  • Breaking the ranks, the company
    in a statement noted that the aim of implementing the order of carrying larger
    pictorial warning rule was to “create awareness about the serious and adverse
    health consequences of tobacco usage”.

Union Cabinet approved to adopt South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network
  • Union Cabinet chaired by the
    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 April 2016 approved India for adopting the
    Statute of the South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network (SAWEN) and India.
  • It also approved India to become
    a formal member of SAWEN to strengthen ties with the member countries in
    controlling the trans-boundary wildlife crime through communication,
    coordination, collaboration, capacity building and cooperation in the region.

Padma Sachdev selected for Saraswati Samman 2015

  • Author and poet Padma Sachdev on
    12 April 2016 was selected for the prestigious Saraswati Samman for 2015 for
    her autobiography titled Chitt-Chete, written in Dogri language.
  • The book, published in 2007,
    links the personal trials and tribulations of the author with issues concerning
    society, nation and the world at large.

Viswanathan Anand conferred with Hridaynath Mangeskar Award 2016

  • Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar
    Rao on 12 April 2016 conferred the Hridaynath Award on Chess wizard Viswanathan
    Anand in Mumbai.
  • He was conferred the award during
    the celebrations of 25th anniversary of the Hridayesh Arts which gives the
    awards.
  • He was chosen for the award for
    his contributions to the game of Chess in India by becoming five-time world
    chess champion.
  • With this, he joined others
    personalities who have received the award like Lata Mangeshkar, Babasaheb
    Purandare, Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan, Hariprasad Chaurasia and AR
    Rahman.

International Day of Human Space Flight observed

  • International Day of Human Space
    Flight was observed on 12 April 2016. The day is celebrated to commemorate
    Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s journey into outer space.
  • The 55th anniversary of First
    Human Space Flight was commemorated at United Nations on 12 April 2016. Since
    Gagarin, 536 individuals have left Earth on a voyage into space.
  • Gagarin on 12 April 1961 became
    the first human to leave Earth’s atmosphere and open the way for space
    exploration for the benefit of all humanity. He on 12 April 1961 completed an
    orbit of the Earth with Vostok spacecraft.

NRDC and Rainbow Agrilife India signed agreement for commercializing
NEMHARI
  • NEMHARI-A, a plant based
    Formulation for Management of Mulberry Root Knot Disease, was in news on 12
    April 2016.
  • It came in news after National
    Research Development Corporation (NRDC) entered into a license agreement with
    M/s Rainbow Agrilife India Private Limited, for commercialization of the plant.
  • National Research Development
    Corporation (NRDC), under Ministry of Science & Technology, has been
    appointed as the nodal agency for commercialising the technical knowhow in
    India and abroad.
  • NEMHARI is a plant that was
    developed at Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute (CSR&TI),
    Central Silk Board (CSB), Mysuru.

Meeran Borwankar appointed Director General of Bureau of Police
Research & Development

  • Maharashtra cadre IPS officer
    Meeran C Borwankar on 8 April 2016 was appointed the Director General (DG) of
    Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). BPR&D is a
    consultancy organisation under the Centre for modernisation of police forces.
  • The Appointments Committee of
    Cabinet appointed Borwankar, a 1981 batch IPS officer, as the organisation’s DG
    till 30 September 2017, the date of her superannuation.
  • At present, Borwankar is working
    in her cadre state Maharashtra. In her long career, she has also worked in
    Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

Sports –
England Cricketer James Taylor retired from International Cricket
  • England and Nottinghamshire
    batsman James Taylor on 12 April 2016 announced his retirement at the age of 26
    due to ill health.
  • He was diagnosed with
    Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) that needs an operation
    to his Heart.
  • He played seven Test matches for
    England and the first was against South Africa at Headingley in 2012. He
    averaged 26 with top Test score was 76 against Pakistan in November 2015.
  • He made his one-day international
    debut in 2011 against Ireland and played 27 ODIs with an average of 42.23. He
    scored seven fifties and one century (101) against Australia in September 2015.
