  1. In its efforts to promote digital
    financial transactions, the Kerala-based NBFC
    Manappuram Finance
    will launch its own co-branded prepaid card in tie-up
    with YES Bank.
  2. The government will soon launch
    an umbrella programme ‘SAMPADA’ for
    food processing sector with Rs. 6,000 crore outlay to integrate current and new
    schemes aimed at reducing food wastage and doubling farmers’ income.
  3. India and Georgia on 11
    April 2017 signed a Joint Statement on the launching of the Joint Feasibility
    Study on the bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
  4. Finnish mobile giant Nokia on 10 April 2017 signed
    Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airtel
    and BSNL to work on 5G technology and
    connected devices in India.
  5. India’s largest online retailer Flipkart on 10 April 2017 raised a
    total fund of USD 1.4 billion from China’s Tencent,
    US-based e-commerce firm eBay and
    software maker Microsoft. Moreover,
    it also acquired eBay’s Indian operations in a move to
    build a ‘mahagathbandhan’ of global tech giants to counter Amazon.
  6. The Union Ministry of Rural
    Development released Rs 23443.09 Cr to the states on 10 April 2017, as the
    first budgetary instalment for the financial year 2017-18 under the Mahatma
    Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
  7. The G20 Digital Ministerial Meeting on Digital Economy concluded on
    7 April 2017 in Dusseldorf, Germany. The meeting was attended by
    the G20 Ministers in charge of digitalization, including the Union Minister for
    Electronics and Information Technology and Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad.
  8. India’s first ever micro-drama
    festival, named Thespis, was held on
    9 April 2017 in New Delhi.
  9. The Union Minister for Science
    & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan launched a new web portal called
    nakshe’ in New Delhi on 10 April
    2017. The launch commemorates the 250th anniversary of Survey of India (SoI).
  10. A two day National Convention on World Homoeopathy Day was on 10 April
    2017 successfully concluded in New Delhi. The theme of the convention was
    ‘Enhancing Quality of Research in Homoeopathy’.
  11. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister
    for Information and Broadcasting, on 10 April 2017 released a book titled
    Gandhi in Champaran at National Mahatma Gandhi Museum in New Delhi. The book is
    authored by noted writer Dinanath Gopal

Financial and Banking News –
Manappuram Finance to launch co-branded prepaid card with YES Bank

  • In its efforts to promote digital
    financial transactions, the Kerala-based NBFC Manappuram Finance will launch
    its own co-branded prepaid card in tie-up with YES Bank.
  • The ‘Manappuram YES Bank Prepaid
    Money Card’ can be pre-loaded up to a maximum amount of Rs. 50,000 and then be
    used to withdraw money from all ATMs. As the card works on the popular
    MasterCard and RuPay networks, it can also be used for online transactions and
    at merchant establishments with PoS terminals.
  • The company will issue the
    prepaid cards to its entire base of 20 lakh customers and link their existing
    gold loan accounts to the card. This will enable them to withdraw money from
    ATMs across India. Moreover, customers can also withdraw money from any of the
    3,300 branches of Manappuram Finance, a feature unique to this card.
  • The card can be reloaded directly
    at all Manappuram branches and can also be purchased by non-customers by
    furnishing their mobile number and KYC document as prescribed by the RBI.
Govt to launch Rs. 6000-cr ‘SAMPADA’ scheme for food processing

  • The government will soon launch
    an umbrella programme ‘SAMPADA’ for food processing sector with Rs. 6,000 crore
    outlay to integrate current and new schemes aimed at reducing food wastage and
    doubling farmers’ income.
  • Announcing this, Food Processing
    Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said her ministry would soon approach the Cabinet
    for the approval of ‘Scheme for Agro-Marine Produce Processing and Development
    of Agro-Processing Clusters (SAMPADA).’
  • To create infrastructure for
    improving the entire food supply chain, three schemes— ‘Creation/ Expansion of
    Food Processing and Preservation Capacities’, ‘New Agro-Processing Clusters’
    and ‘Backward and Forward Linkages’ are on anvil.
  • Badal said the government is
    taking steps to boost food processing sector as part of its objective to bring
    down post harvest losses preferably to zero level, provide quality food to
    consumers at cheaper price and for doubling of farmers’ income.
  • The Centre has so far sanctioned
    42 mega food parks and 234 cold chain projects with 139 lakh tonnes of
    preserving and processing capacity of agro-produce worth Rs. 35,000 crore.
  • The post-harvest losses is
    estimated at Rs. 92,000 crore annually, she said, adding that these food parks
    and cold chains would help in cutting this wastage.
  • These projects, being set up with
    a total investment of about Rs. 15,000 crore, will also generate employment for
    3.5 lakh persons and benefit 15 lakh farmers.
  • Elaborating on proposed SAMPADA
    scheme, Special Secretary in the ministry Jagdish Prasad Meena said the Rs.
    6,000-crore programme will be implemented by 2019-20 fiscal.
India, Georgia signed Joint Statement on Free Trade Agreement

  • India and Georgia on 11 April
    2017 signed a Joint Statement on the launching of the Joint Feasibility Study
    on the bilateral Free Trade Agreement.
  • The agreement was signed after a
    meeting between the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia
    GiorgiGakharia and the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Nirmala
    Sitharaman in New Delhi.
  • On this occasion, both the
    ministers expressed the hope that the Joint Feasibility Study Group shall issue
    a report with the relevant analysis and recommendations within a period of six
    months.
Nokia partners with Airtel and BSNL to bring 5G Services in India

  • Finnish mobile giant Nokia on 10
    April 2017 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airtel and BSNL to
    work on 5G technology and connected devices in India.
  • The MoU signed among the three
    involve introduction of 5G services in India, as well as infrastructure
    development that would be required to set it up.
  • Nokia and Airtel will together
    look at network evolution to 5G, exploring operations, cost-effectiveness,
    quality and reliability.
  • Nokia will work with BSNL by
    offering new products that plug into 5G technology as proof-of-concept
    demonstrations for the Indian market.
  • The MoU will help BSNL to draw a
    framework for transition from the current network to a futuristic 5G network.
  • In addition to this, Nokia is
    setting up a 5G experience zone in Bengaluru in order to assess the
    requirements of the technology.
Flipkart acquires eBay India business to fight Amazon

  • India’s largest online retailer
    Flipkart on 10 April 2017 raised a total fund of USD 1.4 billion from China’s
    Tencent, US-based e-commerce firm eBay and software maker Microsoft.
  • Moreover, it also acquired eBay’s
    Indian operations in a move to build a ‘mahagathbandhan’ of global tech giants
    to counter Amazon.
  • This new funding round valued
    Flipkart at  USD 11.6 billion now. This
    is about 24 per cent lower than the USD 15.2 billion valuation it got in 2015
    based on the funds it raised at that time.
  • Tencent will be a strategic
    investor for the company, bringing experience in linking social networking and
    e-commerce. Tencent will lend significant expertise to Flipkart as it seeks to
    bolster its leadership position in India’s e-commerce market.
Union Ministry releases Rs. 23,443 Cr to the states for development
activities

  • The Union Ministry of Rural
    Development released Rs 23443.09 Cr to the states on 10 April 2017, as the
    first budgetary instalment for the financial year 2017-18 under the Mahatma
    Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
  • The released amount also includes
    all the pending dues as on 31 March 2017. The money was released to ensure
    there is no delay in the work towards water conservation.
  • This time under the MGNREGS
    scheme, the government is laying special focus on water conservation and water
    management works.
  • The Rural Development ministry
    has also advised all the states to see that water conservation efforts are made
    wherever required with proper technical and scientific scrutiny.
  • The ministry in collaboration
    with the Ministry of Water Resources has also developed a set of guidelines for
    Mission Water Conservation that has already been shared with the states.
  • Along with this, a list of 2264
    water-stressed Blocks has been prepared with the help of the Water Resources
    ministry.
  • These blocks are located in 324
    districts spread across 21 states of the country.
  • Further, the ministry has advised
    the states to ensure that at least 65% per cent of the allocated amount is
    spent on Natural Resource Management (NRM) activities with top most priority
    accorded to water conservation works, especially in the regions that are
    drought prone and receive inadequate rainfall.
  • There are 155 kinds of work
    permissible under MGNREGS, among which almost 100 are NRM related.

G20 Digital Ministerial Meeting on Digital Economy held in Germany

  • The G20 Digital Ministerial
    Meeting on Digital Economy concluded on 7 April 2017 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
    The meeting was attended by the G20 Ministers in charge of digitalization,
    including the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Law
    and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad.
  • Primarily, Ravi Shankar Prasad
    shared India’s experience in carrying out digital India initiatives with other
    digital economies.
  • He stressed that India supports
    better international cooperation in cyber security to fight against growing
    cybercrime and cyber terrorism.
  • He said that India is also of the
    view that multi stakeholder model is the best option for the spread of
    digitalization.

India’s first ever micro-drama festival held in Delhi

  • India’s first ever micro-drama
    festival, named Thespis, was held on 9 April 2017 in New Delhi.
  • The longest play of the festival
    ran for not more than 10 minutes and the shortest one lasted for only 42
    seconds.
  • The day-long event saw screening
    of 28 independent plays at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Art.
  • Named after Thespis of Icaria,
    the festival was organised by theatre group ‘Vriksh’.
  • The inaugural play of the
    festival was titled Chamaeleonidae. The act showed a chameleon shedding his
    skin after getting disgusted by the hypocritical nature of humans.
Union Minister launches ‘nakshe’ portal to celebrate Survey of India’s
250 Anniversary

  • The Union Minister for Science
    & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan launched a new web portal called
    ‘nakshe’ in New Delhi on 10 April 2017. The launch commemorates the 250th
    anniversary of Survey of India (SoI).
  • The event saw in attendance Y.S.
    Chowdary, the Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth
    Sciences, Swarna Subba Rao, the Surveyor General of India and other top
    scientists and professionals from the Geospatial Industry.
  • The portal will offer Topographic
    maps or Open Series Maps (OSM) for free download in a pdf format through
    Aaadhar enabled user authentication process.
  • The move is in line with the
    Indian government’s Digital India programme.
  • Topographic maps or Open Series
    Maps (OSM) comprise natural and man-made geographical features including
    terrain or topography.
Two day Convention on World Homoeopathy Day concludes in India

  • A two day National Convention on
    World Homoeopathy Day was on 10 April 2017 successfully concluded in New Delhi.
    The theme of the convention was ‘Enhancing Quality of Research in Homoeopathy’.
  • As per the Ministry of AYUSH, the
    objective of this convention is to deliberate on the existing scenario of
    Homeopathy in India and other countries and develop strategies for formulating
    national policies.
  • The convention was organised by
    Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH), an autonomous research
    organization of Ministry of AYUSH. The event was organised to commemorate the
    262nd birth anniversary of the founder of Homoeopathy Christian Friedrich
    Samuel Hahnemann on the occasion of World Homoeopathy Day 2017.

National Hindi Sevi Samman Awards for the year 2015 announced

  • N.K. Pandey, Director of the
    Central Hindi Institute, on 10 April 2017 announced the names of 26 writers
    from different categories for the prestigious Hindi Sevi Samman Awards for the
    year 2015.
  • The Hindi Sevi Samman Awards were
    instituted by Central Hindi Institute, Agra in 1989. 
Colson Whitehead’s “Underground Railroad” wins Pulitzer

  • 2017 Pulitzer Prizes were
    announced on 10 April 2017 by Pulitzer Prize Administrator Mike Pride in at
    Columbia University in New York. The announcement marks the 101st year of
    prizes.
  • The awards were announced in 21
    categories and they include Letters, Drama & Music and Journalism.
  • The novel titled The Underground
    Railroad authored by Colson Whitehead won the Pulitzer Prize in the fiction
    segment. In 2016, the novel had received the National Book Award of the US.
    This is for the first time in more than 20 years that the same work won the
    Pulitzer and National Book Award for fiction.

  • The book is authored by noted
