SBI, KfW tie up $274 mn loan facility for affordable housing

  • State Bank of India and the
    German KfW Development Bank have concluded a $274 million (approximately Rs.
    1,800 crore) 15-year promotions loan facility to support lending for affordable
    housing in India.
  • Siddhartha Sengupta, Deputy
    Managing Director signed the agreement on behalf of SBI, while KfW was
    represented by Dr. Norbert Kloppenburg, Member of the Executive Board and Mr.
    Roland Siller, Member of the Management Committee of KfW Development Bank.
  • The bank, in a statement, said
    with its focus on housing loans for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and
    Lower Income Group (LIG) households, the facility is designed to complement the
    Government of India’s flagship affordable housing programme, the Pradhan Mantri
    Awas Yojana.
  • These lower income household
    categories account for 95 per cent of the estimated shortage of 20 million
    housing units in the country.
Tata Motors inks pact with VW, Skoda; products likely from 2019

  • Tata Motors today said it has
    entered into a long-term partnership agreement with Volkswagen Group and Skoda
    for joint development of products with the first rollout expected in 2019.
  • The agreement was signed by
    Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD of Tata Motors, Matthias Muller, CEO of
    Volkswagen AG, and Bernhard Maier, CEO of Skoda Auto, Tata Motors said in a
    statement.
  • Based on the strategic alliance,
    Tata Motors plans to launch products in the Indian market starting calendar
    year 2019, it added.
  • Under the Memorandum of
    understanding signed between the partners, Skoda Auto will take the lead on
    behalf of the Volkswagen Group to drive forward work towards development of
    vehicle concepts in the economy segment.
  • Tata Motors and Skoda Auto,
    representing the Volkswagen Group, will detail the guiding principles and terms
    of cooperation in the next few months, the statement said.
Centre to Launch Pilot Project on Ornamental Fisheries

  • The Department of Animal
    Husbandry along with Dairying and Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture and
    Farmers Welfare would be launching a pilot scheme for the development of
    ornamental fisheries with a total outlay of Rs 61.89 crore.
  • The scheme would mainly focus on
    creating an environment that would enable sustainable development of Ornamental
    Fisheries for the socio-economic development of the people attached to the
    activity as well as for exports.
Following are the major objectives of the project:

  • To promote ornamental fish
    culture in India through cluster-based approach.
  • To expand ornamental fisheries
    trade and export earnings
  • To create employment
    opportunities for the rural & peri-urban population
  • To use modern technology and
    innovation to make ornamental fisheries a thriving activity.
Appointments:
B P Kanungo appointed RBI deputy governor

  • B P Kanungo was on Friday
    appointed deputy governor in Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three years.
  • The Appointments Committee of
    Cabinet (ACC) has approved his appointment to the post with effect from the
    date of taking over the charge on or after April 3, an order issued by
    Personnel Ministry said.
  • He has been appointed in place of
    R Gandhi, it said.
  • Kanungo was in March last year
    appointed as Executive Director in the central bank.
  • The ACC has also named Dilip S
    Shanghvi as Member, Western Local Board of RBI.
Donald Tusk re-elected as President of European Council

  • Donald Tusk on 9 March 2017 was
    appointed to a second term as President of the European Council, one of the
    European Union’s governing bodies.
  • Tusk won the elections despite
    objections from the government of his own country, Poland.
  • Poland had argued that the
    decision should be delayed because of its displeasure with Tusk.
  • However, Poland was overruled by
    leaders of the 27 other European Union member countries as they gathered for
    their spring summit meeting. It is the first time that such a decision was made
    without unanimity since the position was created in 2009.

INS Tillanchang commissioned at Karwar

  • INS Tillanchang, a Water Jet Fast
    Attack Craft (WJFAC) was commissioned into the Indian Navy, at Karwar on 9
    March 2017. It was commissioned by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, the Flag Officer
    Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command.
  • INS Tillanchang is the third ship
    of four follow-on WJFAC built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers
    (GRSE) Kolkata. The ship has been indigenously designed and built and is an
    upgrade from the Chetlat class of Fast Attack Craft that the Indian Navy
    possesses.
  • The first two ships of the class,
    INS Tihayu and INS Tarmugli, were commissioned in 2016 and are based at
    Visakhapatnam. During the speed trail, INS Tillanchang was able to achieve the
    fastest speeds among all WJFACs.

Odisha Government launches 181 helpline for distressed women
  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen
    Patnaik on 8 March 2017 launched a helpline number 181 for women in distress on
    the occasion of International Women’s Day 2017.
  • This toll free helpline number
    will be available for 24 hours in all the 30 districts of the state.The
    helpline will extend prompt response to women affected by violence.
  • It will provide information about
    women-related government schemes and programmes and a range of other services.
